Grouper Girl

December 29, 2011 by Julie 38 Comments

Guess what we found at the grocery store this week?

broiled grouper 007

Grouper!

Though salmon is my all-time favorite fish, I am a big fan of grouper and halibut. Unfortunately fresh grouper and halibut are much harder to come by at the grocery store, so when I saw grouper available at the Publix seafood counter, I immediately knew we had to incorporate it into dinner this week.

My dad goes spearfishing whenever his schedule allows it and grouper is one of the fish he frequently brings back for our family to eat. Nothin’ beats fresh fish right off the boat!

I prepared our grouper by rubbing it in olive oil and sprinkling it with salt and pepper before broiling it in the oven until it flaked with a fork.

Complicated cooking = Not necessary

Ketchup served as my dipping sauce of choice.

Steamed green beans with toasted almonds rounded out the meal.

We sat down to our hot dinner after returning from our evening walk with Sadie.

She is in rare form today and kept grabbing any stick should could find. She is convinced that by jumping around in front of us she’s going to entice us into playtime.

Doesn’t she just look like a little menace?

Something about a little bit of a chill in the air makes her go berserk. I’ve talked to many other pet owners who have noticed the same thing. Cold weather apparently brings out the nuttiness in animals!

Time to hang with the little nut job and Ryan. Sleep well!

I definitely agree about the cold weather and dogs. Ellie was a nut on our walk today pulling every which way and trying to chase every single thing that moved!

Cold weather definitely makes my dog more frisky! She comes in from the cold and goes beserk running around the house.

Yum, the grouper looks delicious! Do you usually cook fish by putting it under the broiler? I’ve always made salmon by just plain baking it, but I’d like to switch it up to make it a little crispier on the outside.

I like any wild-caught fish! I try to stay away from farm raised fish but the wild-caught is often harder to come by and more pricey.

I’m glad Sadie’s chewing a stick…my dog found a deer leg in the woods the other day, brought it home, and very proudly presented it to my family. It is most certainly not allowed in the house! When I saw it I screamed–you can see the jagged bone end and there’s still some fur on it! EW!

Salmon is my favorite as well, but grouper is awesome too. My dog gets SO excited when it’s cold out! He does this little thing that I call “the kicky dance” and he stands in one spot kicking and growling.

I love grouper! It is called hammour here in Saudi Arabia and it is plentiful right here on the coast, so we eat it often. Looks like yours is prepared exactly the way I like it. Simply and full of flavor!

noooo i wish! these were taken under regular kitchen lights. do you have picasa? it’s a FREE photo editing program from google that you can download. it really helps take some of the “yellow” out of pictures that aren’t taken in daylight.

Ye I use picasa and have played with the brightness and highlights, how do you change the yellow hue? I have a digital photoshop program I can use with the SLR for changing the white balance…if only we could have a couple of more hours daylight…bring on the bright nights!

Despite spending my days inside a climate-controlled office building, I can tell how warm or cool it’s been based upon the energy level of my dog. Holy smokes, come fall he’s such a wild man! He gets that exact same look in his eyes as Sadie does. It’s a sign to watch out, cuz it means he’s about to go running around with a big stick. Bruised shins, here we come! I do enjoy it, though…

Halibut is my all time favorite fish, and I’m fortunate enough not to have to shell out the oodles of cash it costs at the store. My family has a fishing lodge in Alaska and a full freezer of salmon and halibut all winter long. Actually, macadamia nut crusted halibut is on the menu for dinner tonight. I can’t wait!
