Defeated

April 11, 2011 by Julie 48 Comments

You know that one exercise mantra I love? “You’re only one workout away from a good mood?”

funny-dog-pictures-dog-is-in-a-good-mood

Well, it proved true yet again this morning.

As Ryan and I walked to the gym, I told him I felt defeated. I really had no other words to describe how was feeling. For some reason I awoke feeling like I had my butt kicked mentally in my dreams last night. It was so weird!

Thankfully after 25 minutes of cardio spent on the elliptical while talking with Ryan, I felt my mood shift and began to feel more like myself.

As I headed into BodyPump, I noticed that the instructors gear wasn’t set up. After the whole class waited a good 10 minutes past the start time of the class, we figured she just wasn’t coming, which was a total bummer.

I collected my things and headed to the weight room, still determined to put myself through a quality strength-training workout.

My workout included three sets of 15 repetitions of the following exercises:

  • Leg extensions
  • Hamstring curls
  • Leg extensions (Yes, I did these 2x because I didn’t feel like doing lunges)
  • Deadlifts
  • Side shoulder raises
  • Bicep curls
  • Tricep dips
  • Front shoulder raises
  • Tricep extensions

I didn’t feel like I rocked my body in the way that a BodyPump class does, but at least it was somethin’!

Breakfast

Once my workout was over and I finished taking Sadie for a quick walk, I showered and got to work in the kitchen.

After my short-lived hiatus thanks to yesterday’s peanut butter pancakes, smoothies returned in full-force this morning!

(Eye Spy: Can you spot Sadie?)

In the mix:

  • 1 c. frozen strawberries
  • 1/2 frozen banana
  • 1 packet (or scoop) Gold Standard banana protein powder
  • 1 handful fresh spinach
  • 2 pinches xanthan gum
  • 1 1/4 c. milk

Enjoyed in a bowl with a spoon!

I completely agree with that mantra! I only wish i’d made myself go yesterday! I DID make myself go this a.m. and, like you, my class was canceled! However, I tried to make the best of it and did combo/spin running but like you said it wasn’t quite the same – boo. Happy Monday!

That mantra has helped me on a number of occasions! And good for you for still doing a strength training workout 🙂
That’s quite annoying when the instructor doesn’t show up and there’s no substitute… can’t waste precious time in the morning before work/class!

My favorite is “you’ll never regret a workout”. Even if I don’t want to go I can’t say I’ve ever left and thought “well gee I shouldn’t have done something good for myself today”.

There are definitely days when I feel like I “cannot” workout but then it totally makes me day and improves my mood. I think that is when our minds are playing tricks on us — not funny!

Too bad about the instructor, but hopefully they are ok, who knows what could have happened!

I used this mantra today as well!! I got up, completely not wanting to go to the gym, but I thought of you and this mantra, said it to myself a couple of times, and walked out the door. And it totally worked, I am sooo glad that I didn’t crawl back into bed! 🙂

I have so much smoothie bowl envy of you, all the time! We want a Vitamix so bad!

The best encouragement I give myself is something you said a few days ago – get out and do it and appreciate it, because there are a lot of people out there who can’t at all.

We are having a nasty, rainy day here so I’m loading up my iPod and insisting upon a joyful workout with child-like enthusiasm… 🙂

Feel the exact same way.. my theory is to get to the gym, which is the hardest part of a work out. Once you are there, you won’t want to leave with out a good work out. I accidently set my alarm for P.M. this morning instead of A.M but somehow i still woke up! Glad I did! Feeling soo good now that I got it done!

I’m doing the gym thing in my house with a pair of dumbells, a jumpe rope, weights wrists and a static bycicle.

For someone who is into fitness for a year only, I guess it’s good enough for now.

However, beeing my own instructor has ups and downs. My main purpose is to move. So, if I don;t feel like doing cardio, I do at least some squats or an easier interval training.

I balanced it by being more active in the rest of the day, taking the stairs and walking one more mile .

And girl, i felt totally defeated yesterday… COMPLETELY! (actually all of last week was kind of hard). No fun. But today I am feeling much better. It’s okay to have off days (or weeks)…we’re human!

Similar situation today! I got to my gym (teeny tiny fitness center in my neighborhood) and the treadmill was broken! BOO! I think they must have had some sort of power fuse issue (my really technical assessment of the situation) because none of the cardio machines worked. I took my run outside, which I hate at 5 am because the dark scares me! But, I braved up and did it! I tried to tell myself that it would be worth it and it totally was!

That’s my utmost favorite mantra! Those endorphins have never failed me! On days where I’m not feeling it, I always tell myself that I can go as low-intensity as I want as long as I do something. Majority of the time, the high kicks in and it ends up being an awesome session!

Sorry you had a bad night – I get those too, usually when too much ‘crud’ is on my mind. Hope you rest well tonight!

I always feel so much better after I’ve exercised. It helps clear my mind.

Sucks that you didn’t get to do BodyPump! I don’t feel like I get the same workout if I’m by myself either – I much prefer instructor-led classes to really push myself. Now that I’ve bought a strength-training book, I’m hoping to work on my discipline so I can workout at home when I can’t get to the gym (Bank Holidays, bad weather, etc).
