Fishy Flavor

January 9, 2012 by Julie 42 Comments

This week is going to be quite fishy in the Fagan household. We bought two different kinds of fish at the grocery store yesterday and are feelin’ the fishy flavor!

salmon 060-1

Tonight we used fish number one, steelhead trout, as the shining star of our evening meal.

We ate the trout (prepared the same way I make salmon) with a side of roasted broccoli and a tangerine.

From the fridge to the plate in 15 minutes. Oh yes.

One of the best parts of dinner for me this evening was actually the roasted broccoli. I think I overdid it on roasted broccoli a while back  and haven’t been craving it at all in the recent months. My craving for the cruciferous vegetable returned tonight and I’m so glad!

It’s a good one!

After dinner, Ryan and I headed out to Hobby Lobby to get Meredith’s amazing portrait of Sadie matted.

A couple of weeks ago, I got a quote for framing the portrait that was nearly $100. Since the picture and matting are an irregular size, I thought I needed a custom frame made. When the quote came back close to $100, I decided against it and brought the portrait home, figuring I could try to cut the matting myself.

Then I talked to my mom and she suggested simply paying for the picture to be professionally matted to fit into a frame of my choosing. Smart woman!

A new non-customized frame plus custom matting ended up being about $30. The matting was only $8! Much better than $100, huh? And the frame I bought looks just like the one I was going to have custom made. Score!

Perhaps what I am most excited about is that this is the final picture we’ve been waiting to hang for our master bedroom to be complete. Expect a bedroom tour on the blog soon! It’s been a while since I did the sneak peak and I think I’ve kept you guys in the dark for way too long.

Is that really trout? It looks so much like salmon. Either way, it sounds delicious. Definitely need to up the fish intake in my casa, and this sounds like the perfect recipe to get things going. That picture is awesome, by the way. And I can’t believe they tried to hose you into paying almost 100 bucks to frame that puppy (haha, no pun intended). Glad that you ended up paying under $40 instead.
    Have a lovely Monday evening!

I’ve never seen that color trout– how interesting!

I have a question that I’m sure you answered somewhere…when did you start cooking? Stuff beyond like baked goods– like cooking a piece of meat. I NEVER do that and I wonder if it’s because I only cook for myself at this point, or if I’m just really lazy!

Love the picture of Sadie! As my wedding gift to my husband, I had a local artist paint a picture of his family dog, a yellow lab. It turned out so good, that now I wish I had one of my pug!

There is actually QUITE the technique to cutting your own matt, and if you don’t have a matt-cutter contraption doing it with an x-acto by hand is tricky. When I was in art school our professors made us hand-matt and present EVERY project (even sketches and perspective drawings!) so I got lots of practice, but I still ruin the occasional matt when I’m framing! I always forget how stiff the matt board is – not easy to cut at all.

Trout is one of those fish that I really like eating, but hardly ever buy. For some reason, I always feel like I have to use a complicated recipe when I make it. I like how you prepared it so simply!

I’ve been trying to convince my husband that not all fish tastes fishy, and that he actually might like some seafoods… but he’s not about to try it. Oh well, more for me! I picked up some lobster meat yesterday at the store to make a homemade, healthier lobster mac-n-cheese! Tonight though, salsa chicken!
