This week is going to be quite fishy in the Fagan household. We bought two different kinds of fish at the grocery store yesterday and are feelin’ the fishy flavor!
Tonight we used fish number one, steelhead trout, as the shining star of our evening meal.
We ate the trout (prepared the same way I make salmon) with a side of roasted broccoli and a tangerine.
From the fridge to the plate in 15 minutes. Oh yes.
One of the best parts of dinner for me this evening was actually the roasted broccoli. I think I overdid it on roasted broccoli a while back and haven’t been craving it at all in the recent months. My craving for the cruciferous vegetable returned tonight and I’m so glad!
It’s a good one!
After dinner, Ryan and I headed out to Hobby Lobby to get Meredith’s amazing portrait of Sadie matted.
A couple of weeks ago, I got a quote for framing the portrait that was nearly $100. Since the picture and matting are an irregular size, I thought I needed a custom frame made. When the quote came back close to $100, I decided against it and brought the portrait home, figuring I could try to cut the matting myself.
Then I talked to my mom and she suggested simply paying for the picture to be professionally matted to fit into a frame of my choosing. Smart woman!
A new non-customized frame plus custom matting ended up being about $30. The matting was only $8! Much better than $100, huh? And the frame I bought looks just like the one I was going to have custom made. Score!
Perhaps what I am most excited about is that this is the final picture we’ve been waiting to hang for our master bedroom to be complete. Expect a bedroom tour on the blog soon! It’s been a while since I did the sneak peak and I think I’ve kept you guys in the dark for way too long.
Ugh, stinkin’ loooooove fish. Especially salmon when pan-seared. Pun intended.
Is that really trout? It looks so much like salmon. Either way, it sounds delicious. Definitely need to up the fish intake in my casa, and this sounds like the perfect recipe to get things going. That picture is awesome, by the way. And I can’t believe they tried to hose you into paying almost 100 bucks to frame that puppy (haha, no pun intended). Glad that you ended up paying under $40 instead.
Have a lovely Monday evening!
it’s steelhead trout! it DOES look like salmon, though, doesn’t it!? i actually even saved the pictures to my computer as “salmon” b/c i forgot what we ate when i was uploading them. they even taste similar, which is a good thing b/c salmon is my favorite fish!
That trout looks delicious! Casey and I love eating smoked trout for lunch or as a snack with crackers. It’s so delicious!
I definitely need to eat fish more often! And that picture of sadie is so great!
Hi. I think I am having a moment today? When you say you got he picture matted – what does it mean? Do they attach the picture to a matt??
the matting is the white, thick board around the picture!
Hmm the fish looks delish! Haha had to rhyme 😉
We had fish tonight too, halibut. It was delicious but now the whole house smells fishy!
I thought that was salmon too! I love fish, especially salmon. So good and so good for you!
That’s such a good portrait of Sadie! She looks so happy 🙂
What is it about roasted vegetables that make them taste so good?! I personally feel that roasting a vegetable automatically makes it taste 10X better 🙂
looks healthy and delicious. i love roasted broccoli- i eat too much of it and get a stomach ache! it’s worth it though
I freaking love Hobby Lobby. Shane and I got his dad and his dad’s new wife’s wedding invitation framed and matted for only $20!! It looked pretty awesome, too 🙂
I’ve never seen that color trout– how interesting!
I have a question that I’m sure you answered somewhere…when did you start cooking? Stuff beyond like baked goods– like cooking a piece of meat. I NEVER do that and I wonder if it’s because I only cook for myself at this point, or if I’m just really lazy!
probably about a year or so after i graduated from college – once i decided i didn’t want to live off of peanut butter and jelly, oatmeal and lean cuisines!
I don’t know why I have never left a comment before. I found your blog over the summer and I love reading all your easy yummy receipes. I just had to leave a comment about your picture of Sadie! Soooo cute! I am so excited for a room tour also!:)
thank you so much for taking the time to comment, destiny! so glad you’re here!
aww look at cute sadie! she is so precious.. and i love that picture 🙂
The framing looks amazing! It made me smile to see it on your blog again. So cool! Thanks again, Julie!
Love the picture! Can’t wait to see your room design. I love seeing how other’s like to design their space! I found Young House Love from your blog roll and am obsessed! Wish I was crafty enough to pull off some of the diy projects, I am just not too handy with tools! Ha
Love the picture–SO cute 🙂
Sadie looks so adorable in that portrait! I can’t wait to see the master bedroom. P.S. Now I’m really craving fish…mmmm. 🙂
Love the picture of Sadie! As my wedding gift to my husband, I had a local artist paint a picture of his family dog, a yellow lab. It turned out so good, that now I wish I had one of my pug!
There is actually QUITE the technique to cutting your own matt, and if you don’t have a matt-cutter contraption doing it with an x-acto by hand is tricky. When I was in art school our professors made us hand-matt and present EVERY project (even sketches and perspective drawings!) so I got lots of practice, but I still ruin the occasional matt when I’m framing! I always forget how stiff the matt board is – not easy to cut at all.
that makes me happy i didn’t try it myself!
Trout is one of those fish that I really like eating, but hardly ever buy. For some reason, I always feel like I have to use a complicated recipe when I make it. I like how you prepared it so simply!
I’ve never had trout. Does it have a super fishy taste?
I love the picture of Sadie. It looks so nice matted and framed!
it’s definitely fishier than some of the more milk fish like tilapia. i love it!
I love broccoli! And that picture of Sadie is so cute! What smart thinking of your mom to help you save money!
Love fish, especially salmon! I always make extra so that I can eat it cold in a salad for lunch the next day!
The portrait is amazing, I think it will look great in your bedroom and the green in the picture will work nicely with the bedlinen and cushions you have chosen, it sure pays to shop around and rewarding, though it can be frustrating!
Ha! I thought it look look like Salmon too!
I’m definitely going to have to hunt down some steelhead trout!!
The trout looks just like salmon. I’ve never even heard of this kind of fish before but it looks outstanding.
The picture framed and everything turned out great! Cannot wait for your bedroom tour!
That type of trout is supposed to taste just like salmon, right?
i could hardly tell the difference!
I’ve been trying to convince my husband that not all fish tastes fishy, and that he actually might like some seafoods… but he’s not about to try it. Oh well, more for me! I picked up some lobster meat yesterday at the store to make a homemade, healthier lobster mac-n-cheese! Tonight though, salsa chicken!
I love that picture! I wish I had one of my dog, Juno!
What a yummy dinner! 🙂
The picture of Sadie is awesome!!
I love slightly charred aka burnt [charred sound a little nicer? :P] broccoli, def one of my fave ways to cook it! Cauliflower and artichokes are also great roasted…
FOR THE LOVE OF LITTLE GREEN APPLES IT IS SNEAK PEEK, not PEAK. Sorry, but I’ve seen this so many times on your blog…and I know you pride yourself on your grammatical skills.
