Favorite Childhood Books

July 26, 2013 by Julie 148 Comments

Today began with another early run. Sadie looked so darn cute this morning and she gave me those “take me with you” eyes, so I decided to take my workout outside and run again rather than head to the gym for a workout.

I think she appreciated it! Sadie is already taking her recovery nap, but not because she’s tired… because I’ve busted out my computer and she knows that means I’m going to be boring for a little while.

Breakfast

Breakfast this morning began with a cup of Greek yogurt that I ate about 20 minutes before my run.

After my run and a super-fast shower, I topped a toasted whole wheat English muffin with almond butter and unsweetened coconut.

I ate my breakfast while responding to emails and trying to spot my friend Merri on the Today Show! Merri lives in New York City (I visited her last December when she bought her wedding dress) and she and her sister Liz snagged a front row spot as Train performed on the show this morning.

I saw her for a second and it was way too cool!

During the Today Show, there was a commercial for the new Broadway musical Matilda based on the book by Roald Dahl. I absolutely loved that book when I was a kid! I actually read a bunch of Roald Dahl books and thought James and the Giant Peach was fantastic.

Other books I loved growing up:

  • The Boxcar Children series
  • The Bobbsey Twins series
  • Shel Silverstein’s poetry books (I loved A Light in the Attic and Falling Up)
  • Sweet Valley Twins series (and eventually Sweet Valley High)
  • Baby-Sitter’s Little Sister series (This was the series that centered around Karen Brewer! It was a a spin-off of The Baby-Sitter’s Club for younger people who weren’t old enough for The Baby-Sitter’s Club yet. I actually liked the Little Sister series more than The Baby-Sitter’s Club, which I grew out of fairly quickly.)

When I saw the title of this post my first thought was Roald Dahl! I loved his books. One of my other favourites was The Enchanted Wood by Enid Blyton.

Not many people have heard of it but Enid Blyton’s The Magic Faraway Tree. I have lent my childhood copy to friends with children and both parents and children love it! Great imagination 🙂

Great list of books–I think I read all of those, too! I also liked the Ramona series (I can’t remember if that was the name of it though) and Christopher Pike mystery books when I was a pre-teen. 🙂

My favorite childhood book was Tiki Tiki Tembo. I’d read it and I’d also get a recording from the library to be able to follow along with a narrator.

A full grown man actually broke up with me by using the shel Silverstein poem “almost perfect, but not quite” about a woman who ends up alone because nothing is just right for her. I’m not sure what that says about me, but I think it is kind of funny.

Definitely Shel Silverstein books! I’m still a fan. Also, The Dollhouse Murders was a favorite book from my childhood that I found recently and tried to get my daughter to read. Also remember reading the whole Narnia series in 4th grade.I Know What You Did Last Summer (yes the movie from the 90’s was based off this cheesy book). Also Number the Stars by Lois Lowry, The Island of the Blue Dolphin, etc. I was a big time reader so I pretty much loved everything!

Sweet Valley High has great memories for me, Nancy Drew, Anne of Green Gables (the whole series), Little House on the Prairie (the series), The Diary of Anne Frank, Are You There God, it’s me Margaret, Alice in Wonderland, and Little Women.

Every summer I always read the Anne of Green Gables and the Little House on the Prairie series of books-even still and I’m in my mid 30’s! Some books are just timeless.

My brother and sister-in-law are expecting their first baby in less than a month now. I made it my mission to start a book collection for them. Some of our favorite books growing up were Verdi, Dr. Seuss, and Shel Silverstein’s books. I’ve found these and others. I just can’t wait until Baby Jack is here to read all those books to!

Ah! No one else ever mentions the Boxcar Children or the Bobbsey Twins! 😀 Those were two of my favorites. I can’t even pin down the rest. The Greenwitch series by Susan Cooper was a huge favorite. Anne of Green Gables. Chronicles of Narnia. Little House series. And, this random book that I have NEVER been able to find again – The Watcher in the Woods. It was a horrible Disney movie, but it was the first book that really scared me. In a good way. 🙂 I’d love to read it again – but like I said, it’s like it doesn’t exist anymore!

I was the exact same way with The Babysitter’s Club books. I read the little sister ones to death, but by the time I was able to read the older ones, my reading level advanced too quickly and I got bored with them (because there are SOO MANY). I also loved all the Ramona books! My favorite!
