Baby Names

August 25, 2011 by Julie 234 Comments

This morning I awoke craving eggs!

Since my taste buds typically desire something on the sweeter side in the morning, I was more than happy to prepare myself a savory breakfast for once.

IMG_5639-1

I made myself a wafflewich by toasting two whole wheat waffles and topping them with muenster cheese, raspberry jelly and scrambled eggs.

IMG_5638-1

A cup of strawberry Activia yogurt and two blueberry brown sugar Newtons fruit thins were also enjoyed.

IMG_5636-1

Sadie was not impressed with my sharing skills this morning…

Better luck next time, kiddo. Smile

And speaking of kiddos…

Baby Names

Yesterday I tweeted this random thought…

pbfingers twitter

The tweets I received in response made me realize that this is a very common thing! What surprised me most was the amount of mothers or mothers-to-be who faced this same dilemma… and then gave birth to a baby of the opposite gender than the one for which they had plenty of names on tap!

Oddly enough, I have this totally weird feeling that Ryan and I will have a boy one day which seems to go along with this trend. (Rest assured that we will not be naming him Hawk.)

One of the baby girl names I absolutely loved for years was Reagan.

I had to let that one go when I married Ryan. Reagan Fagan just doesn’t work.

Ryan suggested keeping “Reagan” and adding “Megan,” so we’d have Reagan Megan Fagan.

Endearing, no?

Question of the Morning

  • Do you have a lot of baby names on tap for one specific gender or are you evenly split? Or do you not even think about these things at all?

Reagan is my top name choice for a girl, too…I’m so sad that it doesn’t go with your last name 🙁

Besides that, I really like traditional names or Biblical names: Rebecca, Joel, Sarah, Abigail, Adam, Anna and Luke.

Oh and I’ve loved the name Fallon, but our last name is Falls…Fallon Falls? Ehh.

I’m fairly sure we’ll be trying to name our babies with Persian names, and although girl names are beautiful, Persian boy names don’t always work well in English speaking countries.

    Poopak <- starts with poo
    Pooya <- starts with poo
    Shahab <- weird
Sina <- sounds like a girl name
Arya <- sounds like a girl name
    Arash <- a rash. srsly?

Plus so many more unpronounceables. not excited for a boy baby partly for this reason! can you blame me?

That’s funny, my sister-in-law is due in Sept and the only girl name they have agreed on so far is Reagan! I like it too. They don’t know what they are having so they could run into the problem you mentioned.

We are also nowhere near ready for children but my husband and I are also having a hard time agreeing, his last name makes my favorite boy name impossible. Why do we marry these people that screw up our dream baby names????

That is such a delicious looking breakfast! I might need to copy you because it looks too tasty to pass up. I usually start my day with a smoothie, but lately I’ve been craving something more substantial.

Hmmm…I’m not even sure if I want kids but I do have names that I like for both boys and girls. My husband Cody thinks some of my names are way over the top extravagant (Theadora, for example!) but I love them.

I have two full boy names picked out — Cayden Michael or Jonathan Bradley, but the girls names I change my mind on every year! I think this is in part because I keep meeting girls or seeing new characters on TV shows and it ruins some of the names for me haha.

Question – how many people’s names were inspired by a tv character, actor, actrice, etc?

As a teacher, I associate names with my students. I don’t think I could name my child after a previous student. I have a boy and girl name picked out and so far I haven’t had any students with those names.

Aw, when I saw your post I had to respond after seeing “Reagan”. I have only met one other Regan, and I hear more and more women are naming their little girls Regan. I have to say it’s a GOOD name, unique and has a nice ring to it lol. I may be a little biased, but I did go through that period where I hated my name because it was different…now I embrace it!

Reagan Megan Fagan, It has quite the ring to it 😉 I’ve always loved names for girls that could be boys names (call me weird). I like the names Tyler and Riley, but for girls. I would never reverse the situation though and name my boy a girls name, like Leslie (no offense to the boy Leslie’s out there!!)

I have loads of boy names I like. We decided on one though finally! Tyler Jacob. Tyler because we like they could call me Ty or TJ. We picked Jacob for my boyfriend’s father, that’s his 1st name. My boyfriend just deeply respects his dad. We just thought of the perfect name for a girl. Charlie Nichole. Charlie because my dad’s name is Charles- he always wanted a boy to call Junior. But he had 2 girls. My dad asked me once, if I had a boy, would name him after him. I laugh and said no because I don’t like his name. But, for a girl it’s really cute. The middle name Nichole is perfect for us because my boyfriends name is Nicholas =]. I’ve always wanted a boy, but now that I could name my daughter not only after my father but her own father I want a girl.

I love baby names and think about them all the time. Not that I’m pregnant, they’re just fun. Especially when you run across the terrible ones. One of my step-mom’s student’s name is Le-A. Her Mom came in for parent/teacher conference because she was mad they called her daughter “Leah” It should be pronounced like “Ludashay” with a soft “u” sound.

I have about 6 for each sex and my husband and I discuss them all the time 🙂 What can I say, I like to be prepared, lol.

Love your post today. Not a mom yet, hope to one day. My list of names changes all the time, although I think I have more girl names than boy names. I’m Irish so Claire and Bridget (it is what my mom was going to be…. she ended up with Kathleen) are my top two choices. For a boy, well, I’m a huge Nicholas Sparks fan and after reading A Walk to Remember fell in love with the name Landon. Sometimes I’ll fall in love with a name and have a friend end up naming her child that. I went to college with a girl names Quinn and my best friend who also went to college with me named her daughter Quinn (100% Irish hubby) so that name has been ruled out. Quinn Fagan might work if you ever have a girl.

The names are sentimental too: for a girl, Aurelia Laura (Aurelia cause I love that name and Laura after my late mother), and Aiden Edward Mark (Aiden cause I love it, Edward was my grandfather and Mark my father).

I personally love the idea of incorporating names from both sides of the family for a baby. I think when I have kids I will try to use names from both my family and my husband’s.

I must tell you I had the exact opposite when I was pregnant with my first child. We had boy names picked out and no girl names. We just couldn’t decide on a girl name we liked. Thankfully, the baby was a boy. Of course we had decided on the name Brock and then decided Lee for a middle name but when you say them together, Brock Lee, we went with Stephen for a middle name instead.

I have a completely different type of baby name dilemma! My favorite names for a boy and girl are Luke and Lorelei. Thanks to Gilmore Girls I can’t use both! I feel like I will have to chose a favorite between the two names. Also, for a potential boy name (for the currently non-existent baby we’re expecting) the BF and I are interested in using two names that are important to us, but that would make his first/middle initials B.J. Flipping the names won’t work. The BF is insistent we cannot to this to our potential future son!

Before my daughter was born I literally had a list of about 30 girl names that I liked and the boys name list had maybe 10! We ended up having a girl and it took us two days after she was born to finally make a decision. We had it narrowed down to 5 names and then the name we went with wasn’t even on the list!! Haha! Her name is Mollie and she is 16 months old now. <3

Although I like the name reagan I would never be able to name my child Reagan because all I could keep thinking is: That creepy girl in the exorcist is named Reagan… Who wants a child possesed by the devil right?! haha.
I have the exact same problem actually. Even though me having children is in the far far far future I def. have thought about it.
My most favourite name that, if I ever have a girl, is def. going to be her name, is Alyssa. Seccond would be Julia, third would be Chloe. (not that I plan on having 3 children, but it’s always good to have options right?!)
For boys however… I have no idea! It probably would be something simple like Ben, Paul or Ryan (Tell your hubby I like his name, because Ryan is actually a name I would like for my kid).
Oh well, luckily I won’t have to worry about this for another… say 10 years. haha.

HA HA at the Reagan Megan Fagan! My little 10 month old baby girls name is Emerson and I still don’t know where I got that name but older generation peeps (say 70 and over) love to ask me why I would name my baby girl after a masculine name! RUDE!! People should just keep their mouths shut. Everyone always wants to call her emmie too but we always call her Emerson. When she gets older she can decide if she wants to go by Emmie but for right now it’s Emerson.

I for sure thought we were going to have a boy but I should have known better since girls dominate both sides of our family. If we did have a little boy we would name him Hudson although one of my aquantinces just named her son Hudson but that has been my top pick name for as long as I can remember.

I definitely have more girl names than boy. I kept a “name” journal for years just because I like names and would write down interesting ones I heard and liked. It came in really handy when I became pregnant.

However, I guess I buck the trend because I had a girl and we had way more girl names that we liked than boy! At first we thought it was a boy (this made me literally cry because I wanted a girl so much) and then it turned out to be a girl!

    Thus, you never know!

My big concern about baby names is that I have a huge extended family and I am worried that someone will “steal” my baby names before I have children. I am thinking of setting up a baby name reserve system. Ex: When you said you liked the name Reagan, I thought, “yup, we already have one of those.”

I like Eleanor and Jackson. Eleanor is my paternal great-grandmother’s name and my dad lobbied (unsuccessfully) to name me Eleanor. I like names that can be shortened so I would call her Ellie or Nora. Jackson can be Jack, which I like and goes well with my last name.
