Dog Rules

September 14, 2012 by Julie 72 Comments

If you follow me on Instagram, you’ve already seen this picture.

sadie wants pasta

If there’s food around, you better believe Sadie is around, too. She’s a greedy little monster.

Last night, after making a simple dinner of pasta and my two ingredient creamy pasta sauce, I placed my bowl on our table and went back into the kitchen to get myself a glass of water. When I walked back over to my bowl, I burst out laughing at Sadie’s stoic little stance. She had her eyes locked on that pasta!

Our next door neighbors brought a beagle puppy home a couple of weeks ago and last night Ryan and I spent some time talking to them about training their new dog. When they asked us about potty training, we told them about our favorite trick that involves hanging a bell on the door and assured them that it worked like a charm. When they asked about how we trained Sadie not to beg at the table for food, we just laughed.

Sure, that was our intention, but somewhere along the way, we became lenient so Sadie simply froths at the mouth as we eat our meals.

Our conversation last night reminded me of this image I saw on Pinterest that made me laugh:

dog rules

(I believe the list is originally from The Dog Rules (Damn Near Everything) but the link to the original source of the image on Pinterest was broken.)

I know expert dog trainers probably roll their eyes at this list, but in our house it’s a little too true.

The Workout That Wasn’t

After singing Ryan’s praises for motivating me to workout yesterday morning, guess who mumbled, “Wanna sleep in?” at 5 a.m. today?

I barely remember saying yes, but I think my body needed the extra rest last night. I feel foggy today! Is delayed jetlag common? I feel like it’s finally hitting me.

A cup of coffee is slowly bringing me back to life.

I feel better already!

Breakfast

Breakfast this morning was groggily prepared over the stovetop as I combined everything I needed to make a batch of Joelle’s Paleo oatmeal.

I added an extra egg white, a whole banana and a spoonful of raw cashew butter to my bowl and enjoyed every last bite.

It’s a funky breakfast, but I like it!

I’m hoping to work through the morning before taking an exercise break at lunchtime. Today is the last formal day of Tina’s Best Body Boot Camp (Saturday workouts on the plan call for a “workout of your choice”) and since I’ve stayed pretty darn committed to the boot camp for eight weeks, I want to go out with a bang!

Question of the Morning

  • Is there a trick or rule you intended to enforce with your pet that somehow fell to the wayside?

I have only ever had one dog and not for very long =( We thought we had taken in a stray but it turns out he had gotten out of his back yard and his owners were looking for him. They found him only after I was sincerely attached to him…..*sigh* We stuck to the rules while we had him though….. well I did, the hubby… not so much….. =)

Hehehe it sounds like our “Dog Rules” are about the same as yours. That list cracks me up. It is so true. Our Sadie knows I’m the sucker when it comes to sharing food, letting her on the bed, under the covers, etc. Every morning she comes and nudges her little nose next to me trying to get under the covers and my heart melts and I just let her in… It’s awful. I can’t resist the cuteness!

So random…I allowed myself an extra hour in bed this morning too, sometimes a workout has to wait in favour of sleep! Also quite random….I loving cashew butter lately, it’s a toss up between it and almond butter!

We don’t let our golden retriever, Bentley, into our bedroom because he sheds SO much. He’s allowed anywhere else in the apartment, but sometimes my boyfriend Nick tries to tell me we should let Bentley sleep with us. It’s funny because HE is the one who made up the no-bedroom rule in the first place! One night after a little too much to drink, I walked into the bedroom and Nick had Bentley in the bed and ever since then Bentley has tried to sneak in the bedroom every chance he gets!

Thanks again for sharing that! And every time you share things about Sadie, it reminds me how weird our dog is. We could probably invite her to do all those things and she would still want nothing to do with us. Why doesn’t my doggy love me? WAH! haha

We used the hanging bells for our new black lab puppy (almost a year ago now) and it worked perfectly! Especially since he was so quiet and didn’t “get excited” like our other dogs when he had to go. Now with our other older black lab, we constantly tell him, when we get a new couch you WILL NOT be allowed on it. He just stares at us like “yeah right” ….

My husband’s blog (about life and our dog!) did a similar post recently that I think you’d like!

Sadie cracks me up! She is willing that bowl to drop to the ground!! 😉

We do not let our dog, Sasha, sleep with us or even in our room, but only because I have HORRIBLE allergies, so we have no choice.

In regards to potty training, somehow Sasha learned to tell us she had to “go” but sitting and STARING at us like crazy.

My dog gives me the exact same look whenever I eat.
When I saw you dog rules clip it made me think back to when I first moved in with my now husband. I had a dog that slept with me, in my bed, every night. When I moved in with him he said he didn’t want her on the bed or the couch. I said, “Ok” knowing my dog wouldn’t stand for it. We went out that night and came back to her laying on the couch. By day two of us living together she was on the bed and couch whenever she wanted.

I LOVE your Sadie stories! When we potty trained our family dog, we did the bell thing too. It was great, especially when we traveled to other places because she always knew to ring the bell.

Lol, our dogs are the rulers in my household ha! But we don’t let them sleep with us and they can only come in the loungeroom on a towel. We don’t like dog hair and they are dirty! Lol.

Haha rules for the pets… our apartment is so awful that we never bothered to train the cat not to destroy anything. The only problem is that she’s only three and we definitely will not be living here until she gets old and I don’t want her to destroy a nicer place. *sigh*
