Mattress Shopping

October 21, 2011 by Julie 45 Comments

Good afternoon!

This morning flew by for me! Before I knew it, I was running out the door to meet up with Ryan for a fast lunch at noon coupled with mattress shopping.

We stopped by Firehouse Subs before our shopping adventures and I ordered a sub with ham, turkey, roast beef, cheese and lots of veggies.

chex bars 006

They accidentally made me a large sub and it was pretty darn massive! Luckily I was hungry and managed to do quite a number on that bad boy, with only a bite or two leftover. (Where was Sadie when I needed her?)

chex bars 008

Ryan and I also shared a crazy drink concoction from the 100 flavor Coke machine. So fun!

Once we were done with our subs, we walked to a mattress store in the same shopping plaza to check out some mattresses for on top of our new bed.

All of our previous mattresses have been either hand-me-downs or second hand mattresses from craigslist.com or freecycle.org.

Now that we bought a new bed and need a king size mattress, we decided to spring for a new one. (<—Pun!)

mattresses

As a first-time mattress shopper, I was surprised to find the experience pretty fun! We laid on a bunch of different mattresses and spoke with a salesman who told us all about the benefits of various levels of firmness and softness.

Ryan likes firm beds and I like a super soft mattress that basically envelops the sleeper. Fortunately we found one we think will work for both of us, but didn’t want to buy it right away without looking around a bit and comparison shopping.

Surprisingly enough, neither Ryan nor I have minded sleeping on an air mattress for the past two months, but I think having a real mattress will be quite an improvement. Hopefully we’ll settle on one within the next week.

And now, back to researching… and fact checking. Fun!

Julie, my boyfriend and I like different firmness too. Check out kingsdown mattresses. Our king size has two different color zones (mine being softer) but its all one mattress.

You should try a sleep number bed! You can make it any firmness/softness you want on the different sides of the bed. I think a lot of malls have sleep number stores.

My fiance and I have a king size mattress and I love it. It’s actually not big enough. My fiance is very tall. He is 6’5″ so his feet manage to hang off the bed a tiny bit that is why he sleeps on a diagonal which is annoying but I’ve gotten used to it. I love when I have the bed to myself. It’s so big! 🙂

I love a soft mattress. Check Serta. That is what ours is and I love it.

I just bought a mattress after lots of browsing a couple of weeks ago – word to the wise, you can get them A LOT cheaper online! We bought the exact mattress we looked at in a furniture from Overstock for $500 less than it was in the store…on clearance. woof.

Just a little advice…even though the pillowtop mattresses might feel the comfiest (not a word), they can be really hot.

I love the softness, but my husband HATES our mattress. Oopsie.

Oh and a king size mattress is a very crucial part to having a happy and healthy marriage. (just my opinion)

lol that was my first instinct too. My mind immediately went to those urban legends about people finding dead bodies inside their mattress. 😛 But I actually used my mom’s childhood mattress for most of my life because she didn’t see any reason to get a new mattress until I got a bigger bed. When I was like 21. So I slept on a mattress that was old enough to run for president, and don’t get to judge anyone.
I have a memory foam mattress, and I love it. It gets really hot, but it’s so comfortable!

My husband and I are the same way with the mattress. We recently purchased a sleep to live mattress from Sleepy’s and it is fantastic. My side is firm and his is squishier and we both could not be happier. And there’s no distinct line between the two so even if you’re lounging lengthwise on it it doesn’t seem odd or uncomfortable. Sleepy’s also had the best deal and no uncomfortable high pressure sell!

Woo-hoo! We switched to a bigger bed after we got married and I can’t imagine sleeping in a smaller one now. The fact that we used to shack up in a full-size bed amazes me.

My hubby and I got a Sleep Number bed for Christmas last year and we love it! I like a more firm mattress and he likes softer so we can each find our perfect level of comfort. We’ve been traveling a lot lately and staying in different hotels – we’ve both commented how glad we are to come home to our Sleep Number!

My husband told me about the 100-soda machine & I may or may not have stolen his “strawberry lemonade” soda when he got home. 😉

Congrats on the new mattress! 🙂
