My First Salon Haircut

August 27, 2011 by Julie 103 Comments

If you’ve been reading my blog for a while, then you know that I am basically the most low maintenance person in the world when it come to my hair.

I get $7 hair cuts from Great Clips (I always go when I have a coupon) and I’ve never colored my hair.

This past week I was talking to my mother about how “blah” I’ve been feeling lately. I feel like my hair falls flat and is just kind of boring.

I suppose that’s not hard to believe considering I only ever get a trim when I get a haircut and my hair is cut at one length across the bottom. I’m so adventurous! Winking smile

My mom suggested going to a real salon and speaking with a professional about the possibility of longer layers or a different haircut to add a little more oomph to my hair.

I made an appointment earlier this week for a haircut at J.Con in St. Pete.

After speaking with my stylist, Shelle, we decided to angle the hair around my face and do long layers in the back. I thought I’d feel nervous about doing something out of the ordinary, but Shelle made me feel confident that she wouldn’t do anything drastic and would keep my longer length.

Check out the new ‘do!

IMG_5704-1

Totally different, right!? Winking smile Okay, so it doesn’t look that different, but I think it will be fun to play around with the added layers. I just hope they don’t make my hair look even thinner!

When I arrived home from J.Con, I pinned my hair back to make Ryan think I got a bob. Muhaha!

He starred at me for a minute, smiled and said “You just pinned it back!” I get the feeling that he is a little attached to my longer hair. I’ve done the short thang before in middle school and it made my face look like a pumpkin, so short hair will not be seen on my head in the near future.

Breakfast

Today’s breakfast was a weekend favorite.

Pancakes!

IMG_5707-1

I made the pancakes using Fiber One pancake mix that my parents had on hand. I’m hoping the added fiber will give these lil’ cakes some staying power.

Off to enjoy my Saturday!

Be sure to follow PBFingers on Instagram and Facebook!

I'd love to connect with you! I am always so grateful when you let me know you tried one of my recipes or workouts and tag me in your photos or updates. Thank you so much!!!

Looks great Julie! 🙂 ….My hair always looks the same too. I can’t cut it short because it’s naturally curly and would look nuts if I didn’t have the extra weight on the hair…. Plus the husband wouldn’t like that kind of a change…

I not only have never gotten my hair cut in a salon, but I have also never had my hair cut anywhere other than at home. My mom cut my hair the entire time I was growing up and my husband and I took a stab at it ourselves once when she couldn’t do it (which we will NEVER do again, lol) And my best friend I believe has cut it before.

But other than that, no one has ever even touched my hair! My mom has also been the one to always help me dye my hair. I don’t even think I’ve ever been inside a place where they cut hair…

I really like the layers! I know what you mean about it not being drastic but still a nice change. I just got layers put into my (also thin) hair, and even though it wasn’t super obvious, it was just enough of a change for me. My husband also prefers my hair longer. He doesn’t seem to care how much of a pain it is for me to blow it out! 😉

Be adventurous! Just think, it grows back! I’ve been wanting to the the bangs thing again, but after looking at old pictures, the BF says I looked like a page boy…yikes.

It definitely looks fuller – and I can defintely see you with longer/angles bangs.

I wish I could grow my hair out again – I miss it sometimes. Then it gets to a certain length and I chop it off!

I have the same kind of hair that you do, thin and straight (except brunette), and I used to do the straight across haircut too. About 4 years ago, I decided to try longer layers and angles below my chin, and I swear I will never go back! It looks great on you too 🙂

Your hair looks so good! I’m reallyyyy picky with mine- I always did the straight thing too. The summer before my junior year of high school I took a picture of Hilary Duff to my stylist and got *gasp* long layers and longer side bangs. And I’m in love and it’s been my hair for the past 5 years. And girl NO layers won’t make your hair look thinner! If anything it will give it more oomph, because there is less weight on the hairs and it will just be amazing. Promise. 🙂

I really like the cut too! Have you found any hair products that work well on thin hair?? I’m always on the hunt for something that is moisturizing but doesn’t make me look like I just dumped a bucket of oil on me.

Looking good! Haha, i’m the same: I always get a trim! I did let them put layers in it last time, I usually tell the stylist that as long as you don’t cut off more than 3 inches, you can do whatever you think would be best!

I think the pumpkin head thing depends on the type of short hair cut! I used to think the same thing, because when my hair was short in elementary or middle school- it was one length and very basic. I always felt like my face was so fat…like a chipmunk! When I got older and had a short hair cut, it was straightened and with choppy layers, which looked “hot” according to my boyfriend!

Sometimes a great haircut (even when it’s pricey) is an amazing pick-me-up! I am way impressed that you only used to get an easy trim.. i always get bored and want highlights or a shorter cut. I just chopped my hair off and am trying to get used to it!

If done properly, the layers should add fullness. I think it looks great!

Although, my mind is blown (and my proverbial hat is off to you) that you have been getting $7 hair cuts! I tip my hairdresser more than that. It would be lovely to be able topay only that 😀

My hair is exactly the same, very fine and I actually was at the salon today too! (blogged about it today) First time in over a year and they killed it! She did layers toward the bottom and I’m already having a blast playing with it because now I finally have a little volume. Sometimes it’s nice to indulge a bit in a supremely expensive haircut 🙂

Cute cut! From a fellow girl with thin hair, maybe next time you can have your stylist cut short layers around the top of your head to add some more volume. It really helped me, so maybe it would work for you too. I also think side bands would work great for you. (Just ideas if you wanted to change it up even further down the road.) But I think that it looks great now!

LOVE the new doo girl! I am as low maintanance as it gets when it comes to my tresses; usually I put it up in a pony-tail or braid and call it good but every once in a while it is nice to get something a little different. I just recently went all out and cut 8″ off and was lucky enough to donate to Locks of Love, such a great organization! Not only was it a good change, but it felt so good knowing I was giving a little back.

However, that being said…I’m so ready for my long hair back lol.

Very cute! I’ve never colored my hair either. I cut my hair short once, when I had 9 1/2 inches cut to be donated to Locks of Love, but since then I’ve grown it out, and I prefer it this way. My face looks really chubby when it’s short. When I donated my hair several people said “ahh..why did you cut your hair…?” That’s never a good sign, haha.

Love the haircut! A+ to you for being brave. My hair is the definition of boring (and damaged, but let’s not get into that…haha). I’d like to try something different someday, but I’ve been growing my hair out for almost three full years now, and I’m soo close to my goal length that there’s no way I’m cutting it until I get there.

You’re hair always looks good, but I’m glad you got adventurous. Baby steps!

I had long hair for quite some time, but then over the years I kept getting it cut shorter and shorter. I now have an asymmetrical bob and love it. To change things up, I occasionally dye a piece of my hair purple or pink. It doesn’t always stand out, but when my boss sees it, it freaks him out.
    Ha! I LOVE that 🙂

I think you should definitely play with side sweepy bangs! Life is about exploring…its just hair, it will grow back, and your hair has nothing to do with you and how awesome and spectacular you are, so what the hell!!

Growing up I had hair so straight it took three tries to get a perm to stick. Then I got tired of it and chopped it off. Shortest do I ever had and will never have again. Now I have a bit of a wave at the tips of my hair. Long layers make them stand out more. So I’ve stuck with it. I also do the side swept bangs. I just hate keeping those up so after awhile my bangs look crappy. And I only cut my hair when it gets so long that I keep getting it caught while in the car. You know when you lean forward for something. Well if I can’t move cause my hair is pinned to my seat by my back then it’s too long.
