Sadie’s Trip to the Vet

June 12, 2012 by Julie 102 Comments

Sadie went to the vet late this morning.

Care to ask her how it went?

touch and go

Clearly she was a little nervous.

It was Sadie’s first time visiting a new vet in Ocala, but something about the smell of the vet’s office made her uneasy from the get-go. Even though she’d never been there before, she went into instant baby mode when we walked in.

Maybe all veterinary offices have the same smell?

death and dying

We spent our time in the waiting room like this:

sadie's vet appointment 011

A 38-pound shaking dog in my lap. (Sadie gained three pounds since her last vet visit! Woo!)

The appointment itself went well. Sadie got some vaccinations, a heart worm screening and the usual pat down. We’re going back again in three weeks for a follow up appointment following her Lyme disease vaccination and Sadie is pumped!

sadie's vet appointment 033

That last picture is post-vaccinations. It was like Sadie knew all the tough stuff was over and immediately went back to being happy Sadie again.

Lunch

Lunch today came together quickly because I was awfully hungry when we arrived home from the vet.

tuna salad sub

I made a batch of tuna salad and served it on a whole wheat hot dog bun with tomato slices and a side of roasted Brussels sprouts.

healthy tuna saladroasted brussels sprouts

Not too shabby.

Time to write, write, write! Smile

Question of the Afternoon

  • Does your pet react to the vet’s office or get nervous when they walk into certain locations?

Sadie was always totally cool about visiting the vet’s office until she got spayed. Since then, vet offices make her nervous. She also went through a little spell when she’d get nervous walking into PetSmart because we got her nails trimmed there once. She got over that one pretty quickly thanks to many nail clipping-free visits.

Ah! I thought Sydney was just being weird when she jumped on my lap every single time at the vet! Glad to know she isn’t the only one … but luckily, she is only 12 pounds!

Syd gets scared/refuses to leave my lap at the vet, right when we walk into a new house she has never been to and when we get to my parents house (since they dog sit her a lot, so sometimes I leave there without her).

I have two cats, one of which (a Tortie) earns praises from the staff about her being the coolest and most awesome cat EVER.

The other (gray and white tabby), well, let’s just say that he considers the butt a one-way street. No thermometers for him if he can help it!

My dog flattens himself like a pancake in our vet’s waiting room, as if he’s trying to blend in with the tile floor.

Is lyme disease a standard vaccine in FL? I’ve never heard of it for dogs here in GA…

When he goes into the vet, forget it. He will do everything in his power not to be touched by the doctor or be put on the examining table.

Awe pup! We go to the vet inside of a pet store, so she never knows if we’re going shopping, to training, or to the vet. She’s really only had one bad experience at the vet. She had a slight allergic reaction to her Lyme disease vaccine the first time so the second time they gave her a benadryl shot before hand. but it had to be in the muscle! it took TWO techs to hold her down (she is 20 lbs haha) and after she was stting on my lap and wouldn’t even look at me. She was SO mad at me for allowing it to happen.

Dharma turns into a complete spaz when we take her to the vet. She tries to bolt out of the door when we are opening it. Once she managed to wiggle out of her harness and it took two vet techs to get her! She always shakes like a leaf and sheds a huge pile on the waiting room floor. Funny how Sadie knew to be scared even though she’d never been there before!

My Mia (also a Vizsla) is about that weight too- i feel like she’s tiny compared to other Vizslas! She’s such a happy puppy, she loves to go anywhere & is even happy at the vet. My other Vizsla (Zoe) is a big baby- she starts shaking when we get a few blocks from the vet & she recognizes where we are at!

What sort of collar is that on her?

Our dog, Frisket, doesn’t mind the vet. He’s usually pretty cool. But the GROOMER scares the pants off him. He used to love it, but then an inexperienced groomer used scissors instead of whatever it is they actually use, and cut him He has a V-shaped scar on his side, now. My dad won’t let anyone but the shop owner groom him from now on.

My dad and my sis were huge fans of this mid-90’s computer animated show “Reboot” and that was the name of the dog on that show. Most people call him ‘Brisket’ but my grandma always called him Whisket. lol

The whole show takes place inside a computer, and it’s like this regular world, only a computer virus is going to take over the computer, and the lead character, B.O.B, is constantly getting stuck in games and stuff. It’s on Netflix, and pretty fun, but sooooo dated. lol

We have two dogs, neither get nervous… yet. One is still a puppy and hasn’t been snipped snipped yet so I’m sure his feelings will change after that.

We left the two of them for Memorial Day weekend at the vet’s office when we went out of town (we hated to have to do it) but they just trotted off into the back room before I could even say good bye. I was the one with tears that day at the vet. Lord knows how I’ll do when I have kids and they start school.

LOL love the speech bubbles today!!! One of our dogs used to haaaate the car. She’d get so nervous that she’d be sick every time we drove her somewhere. We knew it was going to happen so our ‘usual’ would be to put her in our recycle box on the seat next to my sister, then line everything around the box with newspaper. Not fun to clean up at all! One of our other dogs (in the days after the pukey one!) used to stay at a kennel when we went away on holiday. When we came back, she would be SO hyper in the car… it was like picking up a little kid from summer camp!

My dog absolutely trembles whenever she goes to get her hair cut! I always feel so bad for her 🙁 She also hates whenever I visit her at my parents’ house & then have to be dropped off at the train station .. it’s so sad hearing her cry when I leave 🙁 She’s actually okay with going to the vet, likely because everyone there is SO nice to her & gives her lots of treats! She also LOVES going to our pet sitter whenever my parents go on vacation. She can actually sense she’s going to the sitter when we’re about a mile away from it. When we let her out of the car and off the leash, she literally knows all the turns to make to arrive at the dog sitter’s apartment (she’s in a big complex and has to make about 4-5 turns!). So funny how dogs are so aware of their surroundings and really truly do know what’s going on!

My dog is super embarassing at the vet! As soon as I open the door to the office, she locks her legs and I either have to drag or carry her in, which is no easy feat since she is a 60 lb lab! Then, she insists on sitting BEHIND me while we wait. I mean, between me and the chair back. It’s ridiculous.
