Shower Sequence

September 30, 2011 by Julie 227 Comments

Lunch today had to be quick because I was way too unproductive this morning and needed to kick it into gear this afternoon, beginning with a fast lunch!

smoothie bowl chocolate 002

A smoothie bowl!

Looks gross, tastes great.

In the mix:

  • 1 c. milk
  • 1 c. honey Greek yogurt
  • 1 frozen banana
  • 1 c. frozen strawberries
  • 2 tbsp. cocoa powder
  • 1 handful fresh spinach

smoothie bowl chocolate 004

Plus an unphotographed nectarine and some string cheese on the side.

Now for some fun!

Shower Sequence

About a week ago, Ryan and I were discussing our shower sequence. You know, what you wash first, second, third, etc. when you’re in the shower.

(We talk about really deep things. For the record, Ryan brought up this particular topic of conversation.)

We realized that we both have completely different shower sequences and it got me wondering what most people do first… shampoo/condition their hair or soap down the bod?

towel wrap

(Not sure why I decided to bring that picture out of the archives… The towel wrap screamed “shower!” to me and seemed like the closest thing I’d find for a blog appropriate picture for this topic. PBF = Nudie free zone. Oh and don’t you wear a towel wrap with black tights and slippers?)

Anyway, my shower sequence looks like this:

  1. Shampoo
  2. Wash body (while the shampoo is “setting,” so my hair gets extra clean)
  3. Shave legs (sometimes)
  4. Rinse out shampoo
  5. Conditioner
  6. Wash face (while conditioner is “setting,” so my hair gets extra silky)
  7. Rinse out conditioner

Ryan washes his face first, then his body and finishes with shampoo. Apparently he doesn’t bother with letting his shampoo “set” to get his hair extra clean. Does any one else do this? I can’t be the only one!

Question of the Afternoon

  • What is your shower sequence?

I love this, haha! I do things a little differently. I was my face, then shampoo, then scrub scrub my scalp, then rinse, then put conditioner in and shave while it sets, then I wash my body to get all the extra shampoo/conditioner off!

Amazing! That’s my sequence, and the exact same reason why I put conditioner on before washin’ the bod. I also shave 2nd to last because I feel my pits have been properly warmed up by then.

This is so funny! I never thought to ask my fiance what he does in what order. I think I will tonight!

My order is wash face, wash body, shampoo, shave, rinse hair, conditioner, then rinse conditioner. I don’t use too much conditioner because it makes my hair feel greasy.

  5. Olivia @ PeanutButterNerd says

I shampoo and immediately wash it out so my hair doesn’t get too dried out (its curly), then I put in conditioner and let it soak while I shave, or just let it soak in while I absorb some hot water on my skin to wake up, then I have to comb it while there is still conditioner in it (the only time I comb/brush my hair is when it’s wet or it looks poufy and weird) and then rinse out the conditioner! Then wash all the shampoo/conditioner excess off my body, because I hate the slippery feeling it leaves.

Also I only ever fully wash my hair like once or twice a week cause of my curly hair – it air dries and takes a long time so it’s quite a pain to do!

I have curly hair too and this is exactly what I do as well! I HATE combing my hair if I forget to do it while I have conditioner in it! And I also hate to wash my hair because I never know whether it’s going to decide to curl well or funky when I dry it.

I always let my Conditioner “set” but not really my shampoo, b/c I scrub pretty hard with the shampoo.

I also always rinse the conditioner out with colder water because it makes the hair silkier, shinier, and much better looking (TRUST me, because I have thin, blonde hair that never looks that amazing or full!)

    I want a smoothie now!!

Haha – I love shower sequences.

Mine is determined by the order of importance should my shower get interrupted by an earthquake, fire, running out of hot water.

    Most important = shampoo

[Don’t let it set in case I have to jump out quickly!]

    Second = Conditioner

    [Do let this set]

    Soap

    Shave [sometimes 🙂 ]

    Face = least important

This is the exact order shower in! I feel like you do it this way in case you need to immediately escape from the shower, though haha. I don’t think I’ve ever been in the shower during an earthquake or fire. I can guarantee, the next time I’m in the shower, I will ONLY be thinking about earthquakes and fires 🙂

Yes! I start with shampoo too bc it’s important to get to the conditioner which I like to leave in a few minutes 🙂 Guys don’t have that issue… they don’t really need conditioner as most of them have short short hair.

And same on the shaving legs being occasional lol I’m so lucky I’m not a hairy person – bc I get to be pretty lax when it comes to this 🙂

I shampoo first, rinse it out, condition, wash body/face while conditioner “sets” and then rinse BUT if I have to shave I do that after I wash my body (they say to shave later on in your shower so the heat opens up the hair follicles and makes it easier – who knows who “they” is but I listen!).

And I’m digging the pic – it actually reminded me that I want to buy a shower wrap soon – so thanks!! 🙂

My shower sequence is very similar.
right away I shampoo, then wash my body, while the shampoo is in my hair. Rinse. Then add conditioner (I was always told by my mom to let your conditioner sit for 3 mins–but sometimes I get antsy!) while conditioner is in my hair I wash my face + maybe shave. basically waste time while conditioner is in my hair. Then rinse out and stand under shower head wishing I could stay there forever!
I love showering and sometimes if I am stressed taking a shower is the ONLY thing to help me calm down–weird right?!

If you are shaving, you should do it last! It prevents irritation. If you shave first and then soap from your hair/body gets into the pores that’s an easy way to get razor burn! But otherwise the routine looks like mine 🙂

My shower sequence is almost identical to yours! I like shampooing before going to the body wash because I have long hair so the lather of the shampoo helps keep it twisted into an oh so fancy mound on my head & out of the way of the body washing action. So there’s definitely a reasonable thought process behind it.

    4. Wash face
    5. Shave ONLY if needed
    6. Rinse out conditioner
    7. Towel off still in the shower cause it’s still warm from the hot shower, no way my cold wet body is going into the rest of the bathroom before it’s dried off!

This post made me laugh with its randomness.
First I shampoo, then I condition. I let the conditioner set while I scrub my face with Pro-active, then I scrub my bod with Dove soap and an exfoliating glove. While all that sets I shave (sometimes). Then I rinse and emerge so fresh and so clean.

    Shampoo, Rinse
    Shave Legs
Wash (begin with legs if haven’t done it with shaving, then go up)
    Wash Face

    Takes about 5-10 minutes.

I used to have a shampoo that required 3 minutes of setting.

Also, I know that you have fine hair, have you thought about NOT using conditioner? I don’t use it any more. If I’m going to be drying or curling my hair, I might use a spray leave-in. Anyway, my hair is still plenty soft and silky.

    Hi Julie!
    I have a blog post request….

Have you ever considered doing a pros/cons list of full time blogging? I would be interested to hear what your thoughts are on the topic and how your life has changed for the better (or worse) because of it. Also I’d be curious to know how you’ve been feeling about your move out of Orlando. I’m sure it’s been a big change and it would be cool to hear your thoughts on how it’s affected you.

Anyway, I’ve been interested in these topics for a while, but I thought the best way to find out the answers would be to ask you directly!
