Shower Sequence

September 30, 2011 by Julie 227 Comments

Lunch today had to be quick because I was way too unproductive this morning and needed to kick it into gear this afternoon, beginning with a fast lunch!

smoothie bowl chocolate 002

A smoothie bowl!

Looks gross, tastes great.

In the mix:

  • 1 c. milk
  • 1 c. honey Greek yogurt
  • 1 frozen banana
  • 1 c. frozen strawberries
  • 2 tbsp. cocoa powder
  • 1 handful fresh spinach

smoothie bowl chocolate 004

Plus an unphotographed nectarine and some string cheese on the side.

Now for some fun!

Shower Sequence

About a week ago, Ryan and I were discussing our shower sequence. You know, what you wash first, second, third, etc. when you’re in the shower.

(We talk about really deep things. For the record, Ryan brought up this particular topic of conversation.)

We realized that we both have completely different shower sequences and it got me wondering what most people do first… shampoo/condition their hair or soap down the bod?

towel wrap

(Not sure why I decided to bring that picture out of the archives… The towel wrap screamed “shower!” to me and seemed like the closest thing I’d find for a blog appropriate picture for this topic. PBF = Nudie free zone. Oh and don’t you wear a towel wrap with black tights and slippers?)

Anyway, my shower sequence looks like this:

  1. Shampoo
  2. Wash body (while the shampoo is “setting,” so my hair gets extra clean)
  3. Shave legs (sometimes)
  4. Rinse out shampoo
  5. Conditioner
  6. Wash face (while conditioner is “setting,” so my hair gets extra silky)
  7. Rinse out conditioner

Ryan washes his face first, then his body and finishes with shampoo. Apparently he doesn’t bother with letting his shampoo “set” to get his hair extra clean. Does any one else do this? I can’t be the only one!

Question of the Afternoon

  • What is your shower sequence?

I wash my face, shampoo my hair, shave my lady parts, rinse the shampoo and the condition, followed by lathering and rinsing. The last thing I do is rinse the soap (or body wash) the rince the conditioner with icy water (supposedly the cold water leaves your hair shiny!). I never gave much thought to it, or that everyone’s routine is different before your post!

Shampoo and rinse, conditioner and let it set 😉 Body, face, rinse hair….frantically realize I should be a better wife and shave my legs….do 2 swipes on each leg and call it good! Thank goodness it is almost winter!

I’m finishing up a chemistry degree and I can assure you that letting your shampoo “set” does not get your hair any cleaner. Soap works because it is made of molecules that have one end that like to be in contact with water and one end that avoids water. The water avoiding ends all want to be away from water so the molecules clump together with the ends like like water on the outside and the ones that don’t inside (aka bubbles). Dirt is drawn into these bubbles as you move them around by scrubbing with your hands. Leaving it sitting would make a difference if your hair was soaking in a tank of hot water because that would cause insoluble dirt in your hair to dissolve but in the shower that probably isn’t happening.

Sorry for the novel; just thought the info might save you some time in the shower!

hahaha…mine is very similar to yours except I don’t let it set, instea I rinse it out, put in conditioner, wash my face and body, and then rinse my conditioner.

Another funny topic that came up once for me was where people start and end washing. Like, I start with my legs because of shaving and end with my upper body/arms. Some people start with their upper body and work their way down.

I only let me conditioner sit, not the shampoo.
My hubby and I have talked about this too. I start soaping up feet first and go up. He starts up and works down, and he thinks I do it weird.
I also always scrub my feet. Clean feet make me feel clean! : )

I thought I was alone in having a specific sequence! I let me conditioner sit in longer, not my shampoo… so I go face, shampoo, body, conditioner, shave, rinse conditioner. every..single.. time. A few years ago I was staying at my boyfriend’s dorm so I had to bring all my stuff with me.. and i forgot my face soap in my bag and I had to wait for him to bring it to me because I couldn’t break the sequence!

what a funny topic. it is sort of like which leg do you put pants on with first?

i shampoo first, but don’t let soak, because i don’t want to dry my hair out, then condition, let soak while (sometimes) shave my legs then I wash my body. rinse conditioner, wash face. done!

i also LOVE brushing my teeth in the shower, but i only do that on special occasions because it is a tremendous waste of water.

During the week its shampoo, condition, (quick shave under the arms), body wash, rinse conditioner and jump out all in five minutes. The weekend it’s wash hair twice, put conditioner in and leave while shave legs and have a good scrub, rinse conditioner and stand under hot shower for at least another 10 minutes to wake up for all the weeks rushing!

My shampoo doesn’t set. 🙂 But my conditioner does…maybe I should do both! I get in, lather up my hair, rinse it, wash it again (I always wash it twice) and put on conditioner. Then I shave, wash my body and face, then rinse the conditioner out.

BTW, sometimes my BF brushes his teeth in the shower…weird?

    2. put conditioner on and let set
    3. meanwhile lather body, shave, and wash face
    4. rinse conditioner w cool water
    done!

I have a very particular routine: Shampoo first, followed by conditioner. I heard you should always shampoo and condition before washing face/body b/c the conditioner residue ends up on your body and can cause breakouts. Because of this, I wash my body after conditioning and then I wash my face. If I shave, I do it before washing my body (b/c they say you should not scrub after you shave b/c the razor takes off all the dead skin – so washing really isn’t necessary and leads to dry/irritated skin in that area). Anyways, that’s my routine and my reason for it! And immediately after exiting the shower, I lotion my face and then body. The End!

I never let my shampoo “sink in” but I ALWAYS leave my conditioner in for a while!
Sometimes I start with washing my face if I have to shave my legs but usually I do this:
    1. shampoo
    2. conditioner
    3. face
    4. body
    5. rinse body
    6. then rinse conditioner out
I ALWAYS turn the water to cool or cold when I rinse the conditioner out!! I heard it’s good for your hair to do that and it feels good to me because I always have my showers super hot.

    This a great post!
    1. Wash Face
    2. Shampoo
    3. Conditioner
    4. Shave
    5. Wash bod
    6. Exfoliate (1 or 2 times per week)

I have crazy thick/curly hair but I use a leave-in product when I get out of the shower (It’s a 10 Miracle Leave-In Conditioner – it changed my life!) so I don’t let my conditioner or anything set. It takes so long to wash my hair that I prefer to get it done as soon as possible!!

Having very fine hair, it needs extra conditioning time. I have never thought to let the shampoo sink in for extra clean!
    1- Shampoo/Rinse
    2- Conditioner (let set)
    3 – Wash Body
    4- Wash Face
    5- Maybe Shave
6- Rinse out conditioner and turn water to cold for this little section. SOOO good for your hair, extra shine baby!

    2) Wash face with shampoo setting
    3) Rinse hair and face
    4) Condition
5)Soap body and shave while conditioner sets
    6)Rinse everything

As you can see, I just use body wash for shaving. It saves time.

I read that shampoo and conditioner aren’t noncomedogenic, so they clog pores on your face and body. Not one to risk a breakout, I always shampoo and condition first, then wash body and shave.

I know my husband’s shower sequence because usually I am in the bathroom drying my hair at the time. It goes like this:

1 – Enter shower, stand there
2 – Turn 90 degrees, let water run down head/ear, stand there more
3 – Turn 180 degrees, repeat water running bit, stand there
4 – Add shampoo, repeat standing there
5 – Rinse shampoo, stand there, usually rinse ears again
6 – Scrub body, rinse, stand there
7 – Get nagged by wife to get moving, since he’s been in there almost 15 minutes by now
8 – Hastily scrub face, stand there
9 – Get nagged by wife again, throw conditioner on hair, rinse out, dry off

    Drives me crazy!

Don’t most conditioners have directions to let it sit in there for 2 or 3 minutes anyway? Regardless, I totally get “letting it sit!”

I usually shampoo, rinse, soap body, rinse, shave, wash face, and then do conditioner at the very end so it doesn’t get totally washed out in the shower.
