Shower Sequence

September 30, 2011 by Julie 227 Comments

Lunch today had to be quick because I was way too unproductive this morning and needed to kick it into gear this afternoon, beginning with a fast lunch!

smoothie bowl chocolate 002

A smoothie bowl!

Looks gross, tastes great.

In the mix:

  • 1 c. milk
  • 1 c. honey Greek yogurt
  • 1 frozen banana
  • 1 c. frozen strawberries
  • 2 tbsp. cocoa powder
  • 1 handful fresh spinach

smoothie bowl chocolate 004

Plus an unphotographed nectarine and some string cheese on the side.

Now for some fun!

Shower Sequence

About a week ago, Ryan and I were discussing our shower sequence. You know, what you wash first, second, third, etc. when you’re in the shower.

(We talk about really deep things. For the record, Ryan brought up this particular topic of conversation.)

We realized that we both have completely different shower sequences and it got me wondering what most people do first… shampoo/condition their hair or soap down the bod?

towel wrap

(Not sure why I decided to bring that picture out of the archives… The towel wrap screamed “shower!” to me and seemed like the closest thing I’d find for a blog appropriate picture for this topic. PBF = Nudie free zone. Oh and don’t you wear a towel wrap with black tights and slippers?)

Anyway, my shower sequence looks like this:

  1. Shampoo
  2. Wash body (while the shampoo is “setting,” so my hair gets extra clean)
  3. Shave legs (sometimes)
  4. Rinse out shampoo
  5. Conditioner
  6. Wash face (while conditioner is “setting,” so my hair gets extra silky)
  7. Rinse out conditioner

Ryan washes his face first, then his body and finishes with shampoo. Apparently he doesn’t bother with letting his shampoo “set” to get his hair extra clean. Does any one else do this? I can’t be the only one!

Question of the Afternoon

  • What is your shower sequence?

Mine is the same as Ryan’s.
    Suggestion:

Shave your legs at the end of the shower, the longer your legs “steam” the better the hair will come off = smoother legs!!

    my sequence is:

    1. wet hair + add shampoo
    2. let shampoo soak in while washing my face
    3. rinse shampoo and add conditioner
    4. let conditioner soak in while I shave/wash muh bod
    5. rinse/stand/enjoy the warm water

I always shave last! If I have even the tiniest goosebumps I will get razer burn so I make sure I’m nice and warm.

I’ve never heard of letting shampoo set!

I’m almost embarrassed to admit this…

I don’t use shampoo… like ever. Maybe once a month (or after I swim). It’s not good for curly hair!

    -wet hair
    -conditioner
    -wash body
    -shave (occasionallllly)
    -rinse conditioner
-wash face (always last cause I read somewhere it helps keep your skin clear and washes away any conditioner left)

Hummm, I have never heard of letting shampoo “set” but that is an interesting idea. I usually shampoo first, then use conditioner. I let the conditioner sit while soaping up and then shave last.

    1. Shampoo
    2. Rinse
    3. Wash back (I’m slightly bacne prone…gross, I know)
(3.5. Wash face) This only happens if I’m showering in the morning or right before bed.
    4. Condition
    5. Wash body
    6. Shave
    7. Rinse off soap and conditioner

No wonder it takes me so long in the shower haha. I never realized my process was so involved!

I wash hair and then condition it. I let my condition sit while I wash my body. If I shave (I don’t always…guilty), I will do that before washing my bod and while my conditioner sits.

    1. shampoo; rinse
    2. conditioner; clip hair up to “set”
    3. shave
    4. wash bod (including feet (saw that comment!)
    5. rinse conditioner (while doing this really awkward backbend to not get my back all greasy)
    6. wash face

I literaly hate showering and washing my hair so I get in there, shampoo, rinse right away, shampoo again, rinse right away, condition, shave legs etc, wash face, comb hair, rinse conditioner out, when soap body. I wash my hair twice per week and that to me is still twice too many! 🙂 My unwashing hair showers are uneventful and are over and done with very quickly!

Another long curly-haired girl here. This is my shower routine:

    1. Rinse body, face & wet hair (Really, I just do this because the warm water feels awesome in the morning.)
    2. Shampoo hair and rinse it quickly (don’t want to dry out the hair).
    3. Apply conditioner, comb through and let it set.
    4. While conditioner sets, wash body, face and shave.
    5. Rinse conditioner out.

I should also mention that I only wash my hair 2-3 times per week because it can get crazy dry, and dry curly hair just ends up frizzy. If I’m not washing my hair, I just put it up and do the other steps.

I always heard that it doesn’t matter how long the shampoo is in your hair, but conditioner needs more time to set it in the hair. Not sure if it’s true?

I used to shampoo, then wash my face, then do everything else but then I heard that you are supposed to wash your face last after you shampoo/condition. Apparently you are supposed to wash your face last because you won’t get any residue of shampoo or conditioner on your face/skin this way. This is especially helpful if you have sensitive skin or are prone to breaking out.

That’s hilarious! For some reason, my husband and his siblings make fun of their dad because he washes his body then his hair just like Ryan!

My sequence is: shampoo, rinse shampoo, conditioner, face wash, body wash, shave (if necessary), rinse conditioner.

I have no idea why I’m always so anxious to get the shampoo out of my hair but left the conditioner sit in there for basically the whole shower!

Nope you are not the only one that lets the shampoo sit for a bit. I start with shampoo but while that setting I wash my face and do a facial scrub…then rinse shampoo out and go for conditioner and wash my bod while that’s setting/shave if needed.

my husband and i kind of both have the same sequence, it’s kind of funny.

-shampoo (he actually uses a 2in1, and i don’t let the shampoo sit but i do take the time to massage deep to the scalp and really rub my hair)
-conditioner- i usually put it in a messy bun with a hair tie and leave it while i move on to the next…
    -body wash
    -shave (if i have to)
    -face wash
    -rinse out conditioner

i like to let the conditioner sit for as long as i can because my hair gets dry easily and it feels oh so wonderful after i’ve let the conditioner soak.

Haha I love this topic. You kinda just assume there is a right way to do it, but everyone’s routine is a little different!

My sequence of events on hairwashing days:
    1. Wet hair and body.
    2. Shampoo hair and rinse.
    3. Apply conditioner and comb through.
    4. Shave.
    5. Rinse conditioner while washing face.
    6. Wash body.
    7. Rinse everything one more time.

    On non-hairwashing days:
    1. Wet body.
    2. Wash body.
    3. Shave using body wash already applied.
    4. Rinse body.
    5. Wash face.

Ryan is so brave to shampoo LAST! I’m a bit too neurotic to do that..all the dirty (or clean) shampoo water will run down my already washed body? And the steam from the shower will continue to expose my pores if I wash my face first! No thanks, Tom Hanks! My routine goes as follows:
    Shampoo
    Conditioner
Argan oil hair mask (which I let sit in my hair)
Wash body and if I’m not in the mood to “feel like a nat-ur-al woman” then I’ll shave
    Rinse out hair mask
    Wash face last..always!
Rinse off with cold water! (To close my pores and stuff..since I always, even in the dead of summer, take hot showers..so bad, I know!)
Then I have my post-shower routine! Ahhh!! Routines, routines..I sound a bit cooky after writing my routine out like that..haha

LOL, this post cracked me up. My husband and I also have totally different washing sequences.
    This is mine:
    Shampoo
    Rinse shampoo
    Conditioner
    Shave legs/armpits
    Wash body
    Wash face
    Rinse out conditioner

When I was single, I used to brush my teeth in the shower too to save time, but there’s too much stuff in the shower now with all of our other stuff.

    1. Wash face. There is something about having a clean face that makes the rest of me feel clean. If I wash my body but my face feels dirty, my body still feels dirty.
    2. Shampoo hair, scrub, and scrub more, and rinse.
    3. Condition hair (I put it up in a clip and let it “set”).
    4. Wash body
    5. Shave. This would be the point if I actually take the time to shave. 🙂
    6. Rinse out conditioner

Face first for me, then hair and then wash the bod while the shampoo is setting. Then rinse off with cooler water (I’ll turn the cold up a fraction) and do a leave in conditioner when I get out. if I’m saving that is done before washing the bod, and while the shampoo is still in.

    Alright, I’ll play!

    1. Wash girly parts first with plain soap and elbow grease. I know this is weird, but it’s true.
    2. Wash face. (Seems weird after the girly parts, but I use a wash cloth.)
    3. Wash Hair
    4. Condition Hair
    5. Loofah up my body with body wash while conditioner sits in my hair.
    6. Rinse hair and body at once.

If any shaving happens, it’s while the conditioner is in my hair.

I’d like to mention that my husband always turns off the shower part but let’s the water still run – and rinses off his feet at the end of every shower. I had no idea what he was doing once and had to ask.

    4. Wash body/ face
    5. Shave (if I’m feeling ambitious)

I was told once that rinsing coniditoner out with colder water actually makes your hair more shiny. It’s probably not true but I do it anyway! Plus if the shower stayed nice and hot I’d never get out. 🙂

I used to rinse out my conditioner last because i wanted to let it sit in my hair as long as possible. But I read somewhere that you should rinse your conditioner out before you wash your face because it can run onto your face while you are rinsing it and cause breakouts, specifically near the hairline. I don’t normally breakout, although I did notice that if I did, it was always near my hairline. Once I started washing my face last (and taking extra care to scrub my whole face) I stopped getting breakouts all together. Just a random experience of mine 😉

I shampoo and rinse (sometimes twice), conditioner and let that sit for a while. If I shave it’s while the conditioner is on and then soap up my bod and rinse everything including the conditioner.

I can’t wash my face in the shower because I feel like I’m drowning with my eyes closed and the water blasting on my nose, so I do that when I get out. (brush teeth-wash face).
