Slow Songs That Pump You Up

April 9, 2013 by Julie 79 Comments

Watching Sadie run around outside is such a simple thing that brings me so much joy. I think that’s one of the reasons why I enjoy our trail runs together so much. She runs all over the place, sniffing everything in her path and it’s clear she’s having an absolute blast!

This afternoon, right before lunchtime, we drove out to some nearby trails for a five mile run. The intense Florida heat is slowly returning and it was in the low 80s which meant it was a HOT run.

Panting Dog

Hot dawg!

During today’s run, the song “Champagne High” by Sister Hazel came on my iPod and I found it oddly energizing. I typically gravitate toward fast, upbeat music when I create workout playlists, but sometimes a slower song motivates me, too. “Walking in Memphis” by Lonestar (yes, I prefer the remake) and “My Immortal” by Evanescence (I love the way it builds) are two of my  favorite running pump up songs.

Lunch

Once we were done with our run, I took a quick shower before it was time to prepare lunch.

Lunch today was a two-parter. It started cold and ended hot!

Cold = Smoothie!

Smoothie with Spinach

(Frozen banana + Frozen strawberries + Chocolate protein powder + Cocoa powder + Fresh spinach + Almond milk)

Hot = Sausage, Egg, Spinach and Cheese Scramble

I liked the eggs so much for lunch that I’m thinking it might be a breakfast for dinner kind of night in the Fagan household!

Question of the Afternoon

  • What slow song pumps you up during a workout?

I'd love to connect with you! I am always so grateful when you let me know you tried one of my recipes or workouts and tag me in your photos or updates. Thank you so much!!!

Aww Sadie is too cute. In the photo I love how she’s almost sticking her tongue out like she’s at the doctors office and they’ve asked her to show her tongue.

Spectrum – Florence and the machine starts off slower but then is definitely a faster song. I also like Everlong by Foo Fighters

I really like “lost” by coldplay, or “paradise” both are pretty slow and out of place on my running playlist, but pump me up just the same.

I love breakfast for dinner! And honestly, I really can only eat eggs in the evening, there’s something about their smell that makes my stomach churn in the morning. Unless it’s french toast, then I’m totally on board! 😉

i have such a hard time with slow songs when i work out! i always look up playlists from magazines, etc, and they usually include one “slower” song that i never put on my list. i am beginning to think there’s something wrong with me, that i can’t enjoy the slow jamz.

I was just thinking about this the other day when my Bar Method instructor played “I’m Sorry,” by They-Jem during the stretching part of class. It’s slower than the type of music that normally gives me energy, but it got me so motivated for the rest of the workout. ps- that smoothie sounds soo good!

My favorite “slow” song that pumps me up is “Where the Streets Have No Name” by U2. The fact that the first lyrics are “I want to run…” always gets me pumped and the progression of the music gets bigger and bigger, making me want to all out run by the end of the song. Love it!

I learned of my love for running to slower songs as I was training for my first half marathon this spring. I don’t have music on my iPhone but listen to Pandora instead. It always keeps the music fresh. My favorite Pandora station to run to is a band called NeedToBreathe.

i LOVE Sister Hazel – I was hooked as a teenager but then didn’t hear them again until they were part of a concert series at EPCOT when we lived in Orlando. I heard “This Kind of Love” and it immediately became our first dance song. I think Sister Hazel still does some stuff during Food & Wine or some of the other Disney events – you should go!

I’m a sucker for running to slow songs — it’s weird. I’ve been known to run to slowish Taylor Swift songs….and believe it or not, “Can You Feel the Love Tonigiht” — don’t asjk me why but the Disney/Lion King feel to it gets me going! 🙂

Also, I think you’ve inspired me, and it might be breakfast for dinner in my apartment, too….my favorite!

OMG! That’s crazy– Champagne High ends up on my running songs playlists all the time. I find it oddly very peaceful. When I lived in Gainesville for college Sister Hazel was very popular and they used to play the clubs. I’ve been a fan ever since.
I didn’t think anyone else would still have that on their ipod 🙂
I also love “American Honey” – lady Antebellum
