St. Patrick’s Day Running Gear

March 7, 2013 by Julie 1,283 Comments

Lunch today snuck up on me!

Before I knew it, my stomach was grumbling and I needed food!

Fact: This meal looks horrendous.

cauliflower sausage scramble

But lots of shredded cheese has a way of making me overlook an unattractive dish!

I began by sautéing a chopped chicken sausage in a skillet while I steamed some cauliflower in the microwave. I then added leftover roasted Brussels sprouts to the skillet, followed by the mashed steamed cauliflower and a boatload of shredded cheese.

Easy, satisfying, ugly and delicious!

March Book Club

With the majority of the votes, the winning book for the PBF March Book Club  is…

the fault in our stars john green

The Fault In Our Stars by John Green. We’ll be discussing this book on the blog on Friday, April 5. I can’t wait to start reading!

Now let’s talk about St. Patrick’s Day running gear…

St. Patrick’s Day Running Gear

Are any of you out there planning to run in a St. Patrick’s Day race?

Ryan, my sister, my sister’s boyfriend and I will be running in a 10K on St. Patrick’s Day and ever since we signed up to participate, we’ve been sending each other costume ideas. You know we like to dress up for races together!

Here are some winners:

More St. Patrick’s Day gear that caught my eye…

  • Green Sparkle Running Skirt

Green sparkle running skirt

I saw a bunch of women wearing fun sparkly skirts over their leggings or compression shorts at the Women’s Half Marathon a few years ago and thought they looked awesome! (Bachelor fans, I think we know Tierra would be all about this one. Sparkle.)

  • BICBands Shamrock Headband

St. Patrick's Day Headbands

You guys know how obsessed I am with these headbands by now. When I saw the shamrock headband on their website, I just had to have it. A headband that doesn’t slip that’s also peppered with lots of little shamrocks!? Oh yes! (Get psyched because YOU have a chance to win a $40 BICBands gift card that you can use toward one at the end of this post!)

  • Target $1 Bin Finds

St. Patrick's Day Costume

Surely I’m not the only one out there who gets suckered into the Target $1 bins? I found a bunch of goodies in the $1 bins last weekend that I picked up for our upcoming race, including blinking bracelets, wigs, light-up rings and more. I was especially pumped about the neck ties!

  • Shamrock Suspenders

Just in case your running shorts are a little too big.

  • Shamrock Compression Socks

I’m not gonna lie, these PRO Compression shamrock socks shamROCK my socks off. (Sorry, I just can’t help myself.) I saw Monica and SkinnyRunner blog about them last week and was so excited when they sent me a pair to try! (You can use the promo code MARCH for 40% off any of their marathon socks or calf sleeves right now!) I can’t wait to wear them during next Sunday’s 10K!

I will be running my 2nd half marathon St Pattys weekend, almost one year ago to the day I completed my first in VA Beach but had to walk several miles due to a calf injury, my goal this year, run the whole thing and no physical therapy needed when it’s over 🙂

Weirdly, St Patricks day is really not that big of a deal in England, so we don’t really do anything. My best St Paddy’s day was in Argentina with a whole load of Brits at a irish pub!

My favorite St. Pat’s day tradition is my college’s tradition, which we call “doghead” rather than St. Patrick’s Day, although I couldn’t tell you why. We get up at about 2-3 am and start pre-gaming, eventually heading to an off campus party around 7 am for a dance fiesta, then back to campus for dining hall brunch/food fight around noon, then SLEEP. Some alumni try to recreate it each year in DC…but once you’re past 21, it’s just not the same!

My town has a huge 5k race and parade every year on the Sunday closest to St. Patricks Day so this year will be extra special as St. Pats day falls on a Sunday. I’m planning on running the 5k for the first time (this will be my 3rd 5k race). I just want the medal since it’s the 40th Anniversary of the race and I turn 40 this year myself.

St. Patrick’s day is easily my favorite holiday, and I can’t tell you why. My favorite St. Paddy’s day tradition and memories include my grandma. While she was alive, every year we would watch The Quiet Man, with John Wayne, and Maureen O’Hara.

My favorite St. Patty’s day memory would have to be when one of my girlfriends and I were asked to sing downtown with a traditional Irish Band :). I was a little nervous at first but seeing everyone dancing foolishly in front of me with their green beers and fun headpieces made it unforgettable! P.s. ahh yes, Tierra’s “sparkle”. Turns out she’s engaged now… funny how things work out eh? haha

Every year around St. Patrick’s day I make a few loaves of Irish soda bread following my grandmother’s recipe. The recipe is handwritten, by her, on a yellowed recipe card with a little green shamrock drawn in the corner. I love doing this because not only does her recipe yield delicious results, but it makes me feel close to my grandmother who passed away when I was very young.

One year growing up my mom made twice-baked potatoes and colored the whipped filling green for st. Patty’s…. and the finished product seriously looked like a potato bowl of snot. My four brothers had a blast with that. Also… i am doing my first race since baby#3 that weekend. 10k… yikes!

My favorite St. Patrick’s day memory is from 4 years ago! I was a freshman in college and had been seeing this guy that I was absolutely crazy about for about 2 months. On St. Patrick’s day, it was a beautiful 65 degrees (in Ohio..which is warm for March!). It was such a gorgeous day, everyone was out in the quad enjoying the day. Dave and I were taking a stroll around the quad when he officially asked me to be his girlfriend. My heart was beating so fast and I was absolutely thrilled! I’ll never forget that St. Patrick’s day! I laugh about it now, because St. Patrick’s day is hardly a romantic day…but we also seem to make it perfect! This year we’ll be celebrating our 4 year anniversary on March 17th!

Love, love, love BIC bands! I bought some a few months ago after seeing them on your blog and I’m now obsessed!

A few years ago my friends and I went to local shopping center to eat at a traditional Irish restaurant for St. Patty’s Day. Big shocker – everyone else had the same idea so the wait was 2+ hours. Instead we went to the Mexican place beside it and had Guinness and nachos! A few months later on Cinco de Mayo we tried to attend the same Mexican place. AGAIN everyone else had the same idea – so to avoid another 2+ hour wait, we went to the Irish restaurant and had Coronas with our corned beef and cabbage! 😉
