Surgery for Sadie

November 29, 2012 by Julie 160 Comments

Guess who is going to be a cone head later today?

Shadow-hunting Sadie, that’s who.

vizsla staring

(She was in serious shadow stalking mode last night and could not be distracted.)

Yes, Sadie is going to have one of those big, white cones surrounding her face late this afternoon. I dropped her off at the vet this morning and she is going to have three little lumps removed.

Pink Retractable Dog Leash

After speaking with the vet last Wednesday about the lumps, I wanted to get them removed (one is growing particularly fast while the other two lumps are quite small and haven’t changed much), but was hesitant to do so when we got the price quote back since the surgery is a lot more expensive than I anticipated. The vet said that the one lump that is growing appears subcutaneous (I guess this is a good thing?) and that typical cancer doesn’t really metastasize with little lumps all over the body, but removing the lumps and having them biopsied is the only way to be sure that everything is okay. He also said that many dogs develop little lumps all over their bodies all the time and that they’re often absolutely nothing.

I talked about it with Ryan and we decided to monitor the bumps closely, so I was surprised when he came up to me on Thanksgiving and said, “We need to get the lumps removed.”

“Okay,” I said, “But what makes you say this now?”

“Go talk to my grandma,” he said.

I went over to his grandma and started talking to her about our dogs. She has the most adorable little maltese but lost her precious King Charles Cavalier Spaniel earlier this year and it absolutely tore her up inside.

She looked at me with tears in her eyes and simply said, “You don’t want to lose that dog.”

Yep, that did it for me. Lumps be gone!

I’m hoping Sadie’s surgery goes smoothly (she’ll be under anesthesia which makes me nervous) and that her lumps are nothing to worry about. I just love that little girl so much. I’ll be sure to keep you guys posted!

Breakfast

After I dropped Sadie off at the vet, I popped into Starbucks to blog and order breakfast.

starbucks cappuccino and spinach wrap 105

(Spinach wrap + Vanilla cappuccino)

While I was sipping my hot cappuccino and blogging, I looked up and saw the pastor from our church walk through the door. I felt like he was a celebrity or something and it reminded me of the times I’d see my teachers out in the community when I was younger. It was so weird to see them outside of the classroom environment and I felt the same way when I saw Pastor Tim this morning. He actually leaves the church!?

In Orlando I always saw local news anchors and sports reporters out and about. On 90 percent of my morning runs around Lake Eola, I’d see the man who reported from the court during Orlando Magic games out running, too. I felt like Buddy the Elf because I’d always think, “Paul Kennedy! I know him!”

Question of the Morning

  • Have you ever seen a local celebrity out and about?
  • Did you ever see one of your teachers outside of the classroom when you were a kid and immediately feel like it was the weirdest thing ever?

Though he’s definitely not just a local celebrity, I am still waiting for the day when I see John Travolta around Ocala since he lives here. I just missed running into his wife when I got a dress altered a while back. Apparently she was at the shop just five minutes before me. So close!

    Good luck to miss Sadie!

Our dog has the same thing – she gets bumps everywhere. We had one that was on her ear removed and tested and it turns out it’s just some sort of condition that she has and is totally benign. Apparently it can be common in some breeds (our is a pit bull). Best of luck!

My thoughts are with you, Ryan and Miss Sadie today. I have to agree with Grandma too. We had a growth removed off of our Dryfuss that was right in the middle of his forehead. It was like he was growing a little hat. Vet removed it, biopsied it and all was good. Worth every expesive dime. I actually had an appointment for our Lilly awhile back to get a tiny cyst removed from her ear and when we were at the Vet waiting for her appointment I checked it out and the darn thing fell off in the waiting room. It left a tiny bald spot and so far (figners crossed) it hasn’t come back so we got lucky with that one. All will be well with Miss Sadie. 😀

I know and the good news is the hair has grown back. Though this whole thing reminds of friends who used to have a Whippet named Soda (rip, though not due to lumps) who used to get lumps on a regular basis and they called them her ‘Lovely Lady Lump’ and now I’m humming some BEP.

    1. I remember seeing my teacher at the mall when I was in 6th grade. It turns out she wore a wig to school and was not wearing it that day; I was so thrown off and completely weirded out by the experience. Haha.
    2. I teared up when you talked about loving Sadie! I have been living at home between leases and move out on Sunday; every time I think about not being greeted in the morning by my family golden retriever (Joey!) I start to tear up. It’s amazing how much love you can feel for your pet.

Aw, good for you for doing the right thing for Sadie. Isn’t it insane how expensive pet medical expenses can be? I had no idea before I got my dog… But they’re your best friend, so usually it’s worth it. I remember getting my dog back from being neutered and he was quite strange when coming off the anesthesia, but he was soon himself in no time. I’m sure Sadie will be fine 🙂

I hope Sadie’s surgery goes well. One of our dogs, Callie, has little lumps all over her (and has had them for years). One was cancerous and had to be removed, but most of hers just look scary. Callie’s lived comfortably and happily for a long time–even with the remaining lumps. She’s 13 now and the oldest dog her breeder has ever bred. I hope Sadie has the same luck!

Awww, my thoughts are with poor Sadie! I’m sure it’s nothing, like the vet says, dogs get lumps all the time. Almost everyone I know who has dogs has had to get some lumps removed and they ended up being nothing.

We have a local news achor who is like a rock star in our town. He’s pretty close in age to me and my friends, so we will often see him out and end up chatting with him. Once, he came to my Sister-in-law’s annual Christmas bash and it has been a legend with our friends ever since. The Christmas party is coming up again soon and people are STILL talking about the time Tim Irr showed up!

I once saw the weatherman from a news station in my hometown leaving church on a Sunday morning, but that’s about it for local celebrities. I actually can’t remember running into any teachers outside of school, but my dad was a teacher when I was growing up, and I do remember running into his current/former students alllllllll the time in the grocery store. Maybe they thought I was a celebrity–that girl from the pictures on his desk, live and in the flesh! Hahaha.

Good luck to Miss Sadie! Our family dog, Corky, gets fatty tumors, we’ve had a few removed but not that he’s 14 the vet doesn’t want to risk him going under the anesthesia with his age, he has a big one currently on his chest wall but it doesn’t seem to bug him too much.

It’s also a good idea to get them removed so that they don’t get tore open if the dogs are active and run around in long grass or around stick. Corky was used for duck hunting when he was younger so my parents always got them removed quickly because if they get ripped open it can be very bad.
