The Little Breakfast That Could

June 29, 2011 by Julie 98 Comments

I have a feeling today is going to be a fast-paced day. My to-do list is hoppin’!

As they say, “A body in motion stays in motion. A body at rest stays at rest.” I figured a quality workout would get things moving for me this morning start my day on a productive note.

My workout included 20 minutes on the elliptical, followed by BodyPump. Today’s BodyPump class felt easier than usual, but not in the “I’m getting stronger” kind of way… in the “instructor hand-picked all of the easiest tracks” kind of way. At least the easiest BodyPump class is still a challenge!

Walk

After the ‘Pump, I took Sadie on a long walk around the lake near our apartment. It was beautiful outside this morning! Central Florida has experienced quite a few gray days with some rain this week. The dreary weather has greatly helped with the sweltering heat.

On our walk we saw lots of different birds, including teenage swans!

2011-06-29_07-14-39_243

Aren’t they so cute in their awkward stage?

2011-06-29_07-14-51_864

I wish I looked that adorable when I was an adolescent.

What? You’re telling me Umbros and Shoot Like a Girl t-shirts aren’t cute?

Breakfast

After our walk it was breakfast time!

Breakfast was oh-so-simple thanks to some prep work last night.

chocolate overnight oats 002

Uber chocolaty overnight oats!

This is the breakfast that almost never was because, once again, I ate it and remade it.

chocolate overnight oats 006

It seems like 90 percent of the time I prep overnight oats for breakfast the next morning, I end up eating them around 9 p.m. as an evening snack. They’re so good and seem to call to me from the fridge.

After making my second batch last night, I headed upstairs to bed immediately so I wouldn’t touch the soakin’ oats. It was the little engine breakfast that could.

I think I can, I think I can…

chocolate overnight oats 004

Fortunately batch number two survived the night and I topped it with frozen banana slices and a dollop of Greek yogurt before digging in.

Love chocolate in the morning!

Question of the Morning

  • Was there a sport or activity that you really wanted to excel in but never quite did growing up?

Prior to high school, I wanted to be an amazing soccer player. I felt like all of my friends played soccer in elementary and junior high school (and wore those super-cool Samba shoes), but I never did.

Once I outgrew my tomboy phase, I wanted to be a fantastic dancer. Luckily downing a few cocktails makes me feel like I dance like Britney Spears now, so I don’t care as much anymore… Unless I’m watching So You Think You Can Dance, in which case I immediately wish I could pop, lock and drop it.

I'd love to connect with you! I am always so grateful when you let me know you tried one of my recipes or workouts and tag me in your photos or updates. Thank you so much!!!

Great question! Yes I wanted to be a great runner. When I was in HS, being a “great runner” meant being #1 or #2 on the varisty XC team. I was always #7 or #8 which meant that sometimes I couldn’t even race with varisty (top 7 only). It wasn’t until AFTER highschool that I started realizing I didn’t need this ranking system to consider myself “great” at a sport I love! I have since run a bunch of marathons, half marathons, and so on and love my sport more than ever. 🙂
    Have a productive day!

I always wished I was better at basketball. I’m really tall so I think everyone just expected I would be! Sadly, I am just not competetive enough to excell at any sport – especially ones that involve so much in-your-faceness!

I always wanted to be a dancer, but just never seemed to have the grace/coordination to excel at it. Luckily, I married a professional dancer (yes, my husband is a dancer!), so I am consistently immersed in that world and have opportunities to appreciate dance without ever stepping foot onstage. Who would have thought? 🙂

Umbros and a tshirt were totally my uniform in my awkward stages. I was such a tomboy. I think my go to shirt said “Basketball is Life”. I also sported the Sambas all the time!

I did dance team in middle school, but I always really wanted to play basketball or cheer. I never grew above 5′ tall so my basketball dreams went out the window. And my cheering dreams went out the window when my parents could no longer afford tumbling classes. But, as I get older, my joints are thanking me for that! I still enjoy dancing on occasion though.

I always wanted to be fluent in a language. I went to school with a lot of native Spanish speakers, so hearing them rattle off in another language really got me excited. Unfortunately, I’ve realized that I just don’t have an aptitude for languages.

I always wanted to be good at volleyball, but it was not meant to be. Come to think of it, I kind of suck at any sport with a ball in it (ok, that sounds a little dirty), which is why I stick to running.

You oats always look so creamy and delicious. I think you’ve mastered the art of Overnight Oats.

There wasn’t a sport I didn’t want to excel in growing up! I tried EVERYTHING. First, it was gymnastics – I wanted to me a gold medalist just like the US Olympics team. Then, it was soccer. I really stunk at it so didn’t get too far. Next, it was basketball – my parents felt i was too little too play so didn’t get to far on that. Then horseback riding, dance, and finally tennis. That one stuck, and while I never made it to the US Open, I wasn’t half bad.

I’m not really into sports, but in high school I was friends with a TON of the girls on the dance team and I was always so jealous of their talent. I always wished I could go to the sleepovers and get-togethers they had before competitions and football games. I was friends with them all, but I wasn’t on the team so I felt totally left out. I still couldn’t dance well if my life depended on it, lol!

Those little teenage swans are so cute!! I’ve never seen swans at that stage before!! And I would have loved to excel at dance too! I used to be ok at it but then I kind of lost it when I stopped taking classes and got involved in another things. But I’ve started taking dance classes at my gym which I really love!

everyone always thinks I played softball and I wish I had. I was actually a collegiate discus and hammer thrower, so I never learned how to play softball. I’ve always wanted to join a league, so hopefully one day I’ll get the nerve to.

I’d also LOVE to tap dance.

I haven’t had overnight oats in ages and I really need to hop back on that bandwagon.. so easy in the am!

I always wanted to be a great athlete period, but esp at running and volleyball. I’m so proud to finally consider myself a “real” runner, bc as a kid I struggled just with the one mile around the track for gym class. I was more of a dancer/gymnastics girl .

ps Love that quote- totally true!

Those geese are so adorable. It’s amazing how close you got. If I was with Guinness, she would be attacking them.

I wanted to be good at basketball. I was a dancer for my whole life and for all the coordination it gave me, I wished to have the coordination basketball required. Yet somehow, through all this, I still can’t walk a straight line and I trip over everything.

Ha! I love that someone else recognizes that ducks/swans have akward teenage phases — I thought I was the only one! They are still pretty cute 🙂

When I was in HS, I wished I could be a runner. Most of my friends ran track/cross country and they definitely were in great shape and seemed to have lots of fun doing it. I guess long runs = nice legs and bonding time. I was heavy as a kid, and even when I started working out and lost weight I never managed to become much of a runner.

But it’s never too late — I’m trying to build up my stamina and hope to run a half marathon sometime in the near future!

in junior high i really wanted to be a cheerleader but i didn’t make the team and i never tried out again after that. i high school i was on the track team my freshman year until i got kicked off for bad grades which i guess worked out because i didn’t like to run anyways. ironic now since i love running! i always wanted to participate in more sports but i wasnt very athletic and i was very shy so unless i knew someone also trying out for the team then it wasnt likely i was going to try out alone. by my sophomore year, sports was the last thing from my mind. i’m happy to have discovered a love for running, and distance running, in my adulthood 🙂

The thing I wanted to do, I DID do! I was a gymnast! I loved it. I started when I was 7 or 8, and I did it until I was 14 and had to quit because of a bad horseback riding injury. It broke my heart… I had put so much work into it and was getting so good… but not just that–the sense of FREEDOM and CONFIDENCE I got from the things I could do with my body! It was almost magical. I miss gymnastics so much.

I was a kick butt soccer player and (cheerleader… god help me for admitting this) dancer, but sadly, my attempts at basketball were always major fails. It’s just something I needed to accept, being 5’2 and all…. I didn’t really stand a chance… Which is why I only watch/play short people sports now…. ehehe

unfotunately by that time most of my classmates had already spent years honing ther skills and could smoke me.

So after a year or 2 i let that dream go:-]
