To Clean or Not to Clean

January 26, 2011 by Julie 104 Comments

Sadie is a trip.

Queen Sadie

Doesn’t she look regal and oh-so-intelligent in the above picture?

Well, don’t be fooled. As my dad says, her brain is filled with “white noise.” 😉 Ryan and I always defend her honor and says she’s a smartie (she learned all her tricks in less than five minutes!), but then again she is entertained by laser pointers for hours.

She is also captivated by squirrels which were out in droves this morning as Ryan and I walked Sadie around the lake near our apartment following our morning workouts (BodyPump + 10 min. on the elliptical for me).

Breakfast

I’m sure my breakfast this morning will come of no surprise to you…

Hello, Loverrr

Ah yes, my new favorite!

Eggy

I changed it up a bit and instead of one egg white, added two fried eggs on top of the cinnamon raisin bagel thin, but I think I’ll go back to one egg white next time. The two eggs took away from the delicious flavor of the  gooey Muenster cheese. No bueno.

Eat Up!

Even still, it was quite fantastic.

To Clean or Not to Clean

And now a little fun!

On most mornings I enjoy something hot from a tumbler I keep on my desk.

I'll Tumble For You

Lately I’ve been on a huge tea kick, but I will also sip on hot coffee from the tumbler as well.

So here’s the thing. I don’t wash my tumbler after each use. In fact, I’ll often let the tea that I didn’t finish sit overnight. Then, the next morning, I’ll rinse it out under hot water for a bit before refilling it with the day’s warm beverage.

Just this morning I saw someone else cleaning their coffee mug with soap and water and I felt like I was Grungy McGee for thinking a simple rinse = clean!

Is this gross? I sure hope not, because I don’t see myself changing this little habit any time soon.

On that note, I’m off to drink my tea and get some work d-o-n-e!

Be sure to follow PBFingers on Instagram and Facebook!

I'd love to connect with you! I am always so grateful when you let me know you tried one of my recipes or workouts and tag me in your photos or updates. Thank you so much!!!

Sadie is so regal 😉 and such a cutie!

I always re-use my tea and coffee mugs without putting them through the dishwasher! I simply rinse them, just as you do and wash them one or two times a week…saving time AND the environment 😉

    Enjoy your day!

Julie, Personally I don’t find that to be too odd! I actually do that often. I usually then wash it in the dishwasher once or twice a week. But since you are the only one drinking out of it, rinsing it with hot water is perfectly acceptable in my book 🙂

Guilty of the same thing. We can all be gross together. I am terrified of the soapy taste in my glasses/mugs. I was a victim with a soapy champagne glass – bubbly for ALL the wrong reasons. Keep up the good work. 🙂

Love that picture of Sadie! So cute! I do the same thing with my work mug. I don’t always drink out of a mug but when I do I typically rinse it with hot water. Although at the end of the week, I’ll bring it home and run it through the dishwasher just to disinfect it properly. 🙂

So funny because I do the exact same thing with my tumbler. When you are using something every single day, cleaning it gets real old…real fast. Especially when you don’t have a dishwasher. The exception is if there is milk in it…because that can truly get disgusting!

Not gross @ all! That is what I used to do when I would bring a tumbler into work, but I just brought in a coffee pot for the office on Monday (we only had one coffee pot & it was for decaf only- we couldn’t have regular coffee because our clients are old & some of them might have heart problems…so no regular coffee for them 🙂 ) , so I now I just use a mug, which I rinse out everyday.

That’s funny that you bring this up because we’ve had similar conversations in my family! My brother got himself a really nice travel mug from Starbucks awhile ago and does the same thing. He just rinses it out with water and refills it because he figures the same thing…he only puts coffee in it everyday! However, a few of us got the same mug for Christmas because he raved about how hot it kept his coffee and we couldn’t help but notice how shiny and clean our new ones were compared to the BLACK/brown interior of his mug. I always clean mine out because I’m scared it will begin to look like his!!

Also, I find that if I drink coffee and tea out of the same mug that the coffee smell takes over even after washing sometimes.

I do the same thing. I have a cup that I have left orange cinnamon tea in so often that every other drink I put in there taste like the tea, no matter what I do. It is now my official cinnamon tea cup. I have several other cups for different drinks for the same reason.

I do the whole rinse=clean thing too with my coffee mug the majority of the time, but I do try to use soap when washing it at least once a week. I’ve seen reusable water containers get mold growth under the lids and I would hate to think that something like that could be growing in my coffee mug!

One of my aunts comes from England. Washing their tea pot is considered wrong, they claim that you get more flavor from your tea if you don’t clean the tea pot.

That said, i rinse my mug out at work and take it home at the end of the week for a proper wash (ie soap and water). I do the same even if it’s coffee that I’m drinking. Rinse each day, wash once a week.

I just keep telling myself that the day old coffee ring left at the bottom will “enhance the flavor of today’s coffee”…

Now, we can all give a collective “ewwwww” to that one. 🙂

I never really gave it a second thought when I’d rinse it with hot water and refill. If I were to bring it home to clean it during the work week, I would inevitably leave it at home so I’d rather take my chances with being Dirty Cup Girl than being No Coffee Girl – and I think my coworkers would agree 🙂

Actually it’s not that gross, especially with coffee. The inside of a mug, tumbler, carrafe is sort of like a wine barrel. More flavor is actually imparted on the liquid by having a “shell” of previous contents.

It’s not gross! I do the same. Ha! Sometimes though, if it’s been a really long time, I’ll just boil water in the mug in the microwave, pour it out and pour in coffee!

Over holiday breaks or vacations I usually take the mug home and clean it properly but then forget to take it back to work…which leads to a rather extensive collection of company mugs in my cabinet. But that’s another story…

Be careful with the tea though…I left it sit over the weekend before and it actually grew mold!

No way do I think that’s gross! And if it is, I’m way worse than you! I work for the government, and we don’t get “luxuries” like coffee or water provided for us. I have my own coffee maker and Brita pitcher at my desk. I only have one coffee cup at the office, and I drink coffee and water out of it. I just rinse out my coffee and pour in water when I’m done. I try to clean everything- Brita pitcher, coffee pot, and cup once a week. That doesn’t happen very often. I drink black coffee so I don’t worry about milk particles going bad or anything so I think I’m in the clear. Or maybe I’m just rationalizing…

Girl I totally do this too – don’t worry about it! I rinse in hot hot water during the week and then take my tumbler home over the weekend for a good soapy wash (followed by another rinse or two just to be *very* sure.) I think that plates, etc, should be more than just rinsed because they’re so easy to wash, but things like tumblers that seem to stay soapy forever I have no issue rinsing 🙂

I don’t use coffee mugs or tumblers much (I don’t drink coffee! Or tea for that matter.), but I do have a CamelBack water bottle that I use almost every day. Sometimes I don’t even rinse it out! I’ll just refill it and call it good. But it’s gotten kind of yellow lately (at the top of the “straw”, where the water comes out) and it bothers me. I can’t fix it, either, no matter how hard I scrub. =\ But if I notice that it’s getting gunky (weird blackish or blueish stuff in the “straw”), I’ll clean it out. The gunk is usually accompanied by funny-tasting water, which is definitely a sign for me that I need to clean it. Yuck! Then it gets soap and water, typically.
My dad uses a kind of tumbler like you have, and I think he brings it home and washes it every night. I guess it’s all up the person? 🙂

I think a simple rinse is perfectly sufficient…as long as there are no “floaties” in your cup, it’s clean enough!

I wouldn’t go through all the effort of soap and water unless I had been sick recently or something was stuck to the bottom of the cup.
