To the Pathologist

January 29, 2013 by Julie 196 Comments

I think Sadie’s face in the picture below says it all.

stressed dog

Our vet appointment yesterday was a bit unnerving.

It started out okay with the veterinary technician telling us her little bump was likely just a lipoma, a fatty lump that is common in many dog breeds like labrador retrievers. I breathed a small sigh of relief until the vet came in and basically ruled that out. He called her lump “concerning” and extracted a sample from it to examine under a microscope.

He didn’t recognize what he saw so we’re sending a sample out to a pathologist and should hear back in three to five days. I asked the vet a million questions and walked away feeling quite concerned, as he said he thinks there’s a 50/50 shot her lump is something serious.

The good news is that we brought Sadie in to be examined early, so if it is something serious, he’s hoping we’ll be able to remove it and treat her accordingly since it is hopefully still contained at this point. I will definitely keep you guys posted and thank you so much for your kind words and well wishes yesterday! Sadie feels your love and is basking in it, I assure you.

Sending lots of love and good wishes to the pup. My childhood dog had a fatty lump and lived to the ripe ol’ age of 14 so I’m praying it’s nothing more than that.

me too! unfortunately the vet tech said that they can usually tell if it’s fatty when the vet looks at the sample himself since it is clear, so i don’t think that’s the case, but i’m hopeful it’s nothing serious. so glad your dogs lump wasn’t anything serious!

I’m taking my dog to the vet today to check a few things, including a lump. Having a dog for a best friend is awesome, but worrisome!! You guys take such great care of Sadie and I’ll be wishing for the best for her!

Ugh the worst feeling … “the wait”. Doggy prayers coming Sadie’s way. She’s way too active and happy to have anything seriously wrong with her. I’d be 100x more concerned if her behavior was different/more lethargic. What a great doggy mom you are taking her in for every lump though – those appts can be draining on the wallet. xoxo

Sorry to hear about Sadie’s lump. I thought it might help you to know that I went through something similar with my dog (also named Sadie) and everything turned out fine. I found a lump on her that the vet determined to be cancerous but we caught it quickly and immediately had it surgically removed. That was over 5 years ago and I’m happy to say she is doing great with no recurrences! I remember how stressful it was waiting to hear back on test results so just wanted to let you know I’m sending positive thoughts your way. Hang in there!

Happy and health vibes to your family! We were worried that my dog had cancer (it turned out that she had IBD which we treated for years and years until she passed away at 15), and the vet told us that in that event chemoterapy doesn’t have harsh side effects on dogs. So they tolerate it much easier than humans. That made me feel a little better to know.

Praying for Miss Sadie Girl! My JRT, Norman, had a cancerous mast cell tumor that was removed a few years ago. Like you, we caught it very early and he’s doing great now! But, every little lump and bump I find I immediately take him to the vet to get it checked out. We love our little fur baby to pieces! 🙂
