To the Pathologist

January 29, 2013 by Julie 196 Comments

I think Sadie’s face in the picture below says it all.

stressed dog

Our vet appointment yesterday was a bit unnerving.

It started out okay with the veterinary technician telling us her little bump was likely just a lipoma, a fatty lump that is common in many dog breeds like labrador retrievers. I breathed a small sigh of relief until the vet came in and basically ruled that out. He called her lump “concerning” and extracted a sample from it to examine under a microscope.

He didn’t recognize what he saw so we’re sending a sample out to a pathologist and should hear back in three to five days. I asked the vet a million questions and walked away feeling quite concerned, as he said he thinks there’s a 50/50 shot her lump is something serious.

The good news is that we brought Sadie in to be examined early, so if it is something serious, he’s hoping we’ll be able to remove it and treat her accordingly since it is hopefully still contained at this point. I will definitely keep you guys posted and thank you so much for your kind words and well wishes yesterday! Sadie feels your love and is basking in it, I assure you.

Prayers going Sadie’s way. Really hope it’s nothing serious. My dog, Jersey, woke me up in the middle of the night crying. As I’m walking out of my bedroom I see diarrhea ALL over the hallway. My poor dog is at the bottom of the stairs, ears back and has this “I’m sorry” look on her face. Shes been going non stop outside this morning. Trip to the vet for us today.

Julie, I just wanted to share my recent vet story with you because I thought it might bring you some relief while you wait for results from Sadie. About a month ago I noticed a lump on the chest of my year old vizsla. I instantly called the vet in panic to get her looked at. They told me it was just a non-cancerous tumor that is very common in young dogs and with medicine it would go away. So I got her medicine and watched it very carefully and kept growing and growing. It started off the size of a dime and then looked like a quarter. I called the vet again to have them look at it. The vet was very concerned and told me it needed to come off ASAP so I scheduled her surgery and everything was fine until they gave me an average of the cost which was around 580-620.00. I was rather shocked, and something inside told to get a second opinion. So I cancelled the appt and called a different vet. He did some of same tests the orginial place did, however he told me a COMPLETELY different story. That she didn’t medicine, or surgery and that if we give it a few more weeks it will go down and eventually be gone. It’s been about a 2 weeks and it’s gradually frading. Sorry this is a novel, but I just wanted to share because I know how much we love our Vizslas!

    Hi Julie!
As a veterinarian, I just wanted to reassure you that there is no cause for alarm where Sadie’s lump is concerned. It would be a VERY VERY VERY rare thing for a young healthy dog like Sadie to have a lump come up in that location and have it NOT be curable by surgical removal. Yes, Lipomas are the most common skin lumps, and that has been ruled out, but there are literally dozens of other types of benign growths that this could be, all of which would be easily removed! Even if the mass does come back as something more aggressive/malignant, it is in a really good place to get wide surgical margins and would not likely have metastasized this early on.
Please keep us all informed, and until then, you, Ryan and Sadie are in my prayers for health and happiness!

I hope Sadie is ok! My dog had to get a liver biopsy in December to rule out liver cancer. She is still getting blood drawn every few weeks to make sure her liver enzyme count is going down. Right now they are treating it as an infection. I know how you feel, I seriously was a wreck during the whole thing. My dog is much more than a pet to my family, many people think it is weird how much we talk to her lol!

Sending nothing but positive thoughts to you guys and Sadie!! I had an awful few days last weekend with my dog too. She ate a pack of gum and the sweetener in it is toxic to doggies. I had to prick her ear ever few hours to check her blood sugar 🙁 I felt so awful I let it happen to her.

Also – my parents lab has about 15 of those lumps (the common ones). They come with age I guess. Sort of like laugh lines for us 🙂 Once again, positive thoughts for Sadie!!! xo
