To the Pathologist

January 29, 2013 by Julie 196 Comments

I think Sadie’s face in the picture below says it all.

stressed dog

Our vet appointment yesterday was a bit unnerving.

It started out okay with the veterinary technician telling us her little bump was likely just a lipoma, a fatty lump that is common in many dog breeds like labrador retrievers. I breathed a small sigh of relief until the vet came in and basically ruled that out. He called her lump “concerning” and extracted a sample from it to examine under a microscope.

He didn’t recognize what he saw so we’re sending a sample out to a pathologist and should hear back in three to five days. I asked the vet a million questions and walked away feeling quite concerned, as he said he thinks there’s a 50/50 shot her lump is something serious.

The good news is that we brought Sadie in to be examined early, so if it is something serious, he’s hoping we’ll be able to remove it and treat her accordingly since it is hopefully still contained at this point. I will definitely keep you guys posted and thank you so much for your kind words and well wishes yesterday! Sadie feels your love and is basking in it, I assure you.

(That would be my sister under there. I told you Sadie has absolutely no concept of personal space.)

I have a Zoe who also had a lump that I took her in for…turned out to be a mass cell tumor (she is a boxer and they are known to get those kinds of cancer) she had surgery and had it removed and I was so scared…I don’t know what I would do without either one of my dogs. She is doing great now! Crazy as ever and we treasure every day we have with her and pray that she lives a long healthy life…I’m sending prayers out to your Sadie for optimum health and you as well, cause I know how hard the waiting is! <3

Sending good thoughts for Sadie! My 11 yr old Shepherd started developing lipomas all over him years ago. Luckily he’s a longer haired breed so you can’t see them! At the end of last year my vet came across a lump in his anal gland and it DID end up being cancerous. Fortunately we caught it early, he had surgery to remove it, and is halfway through his chemo treatments without many issues at all. I guess the lipomas helped by making my vet and I super paranoid about any lumps on my pup. Hang in there- dogs are tougher than we give them credit for.

I really enjoy reading your blog and have passed it along to some of my coworkers. We are veterinary technicians and are sending positive thoughts to Ms. Sadie. Hopefully you guys will receive more complete information about that lump soon.
