Two Treadmill Questions

August 1, 2011 by Julie 79 Comments

After a nice two-day break from the gym, it felt good to get my legs movin’ on the treadmill in the hotel gym this morning.

treadmill workout 002

Last night I knew I wanted to do a treadmill workout this morning, but I wanted to try something new, so I put out a call on Twitter and and ended up jotting down a treadmill workout from FitSugar. I changed it up a tiny bit and in the end my workout looked like this:

Minutes Speed
0-5 6.5
5-6 8.0
6-7 5.0
7-8 8.0
8-9 5.0
9-10 8.0
10-11 5.0
11 – 11:45 9.0
11:45 – 12:45 5.0
12:45 – 13:30 9.0
13:30 – 14:30 5.0
14:30 – 15:15 9.0
15:15 – 16:15 5.0
16:15 – 16:45 10.0
16:45 – 17:45 5.0
17:45 – 18:15 10.0
18:15 – 19:15 5.0
19:15 – 20 10.0
20-25 4.0

Those 10s made my heart feel like it was going to beat right out of my chest. Woo-wee.

I rounded out my cardio session with 25 minutes on the elliptical while watching Are You Smarter Than a Fifth Grader? (Turns out, I am. I was killin’ it on the trivia questions today! 2nd grade animal science has nothin’ on me!)

Since I completed a treadmill workout, I figured now would be a good time to address a couple of questions I receive from at least one reader every time I post a treadmill workout.

  • Do you write down your treadmill workouts, make them up as you go or memorize them?

I typically write down or print off workouts and prop them up on the treadmill to follow. Occasionally I’ll make up workouts as I go as well.

  • Do you hold onto the side rails when you do treadmill workouts with a serious incline?

No. I never do. If I find that I really need to hold onto the sides to make it through a workout, I’ll decrease the intensity so I can finish without holding onto the sides.

Lunch

Lunchtime arrived at the perfect time today. I spent a lot of time working on a PowerPoint presentation this morning and was more than ready for a breather and some yummy food when noon rolled around.

I heated up the same Amy’s pocket sandwich I enjoyed so much last week.

While the pocket sandwich was heating up, I snacked on a cup of Stonyfield Activia vanilla yogurt and some Babybel cheese.

I’m still a little hungry, so I think I may be venturing into the hotel lobby for one of their free peanut butter packets to enjoy with a cold apple from our fridge.

The rest of the day will be spent finalizing my PowerPoint presentation and hopefully getting a jump start on tomorrow’s Blog Talk Tuesday post!

Hi Julie! I have a question for you regarding the transitions between speeds / inclines on treadmill interval workouts such as this one today (though it doesn’t look like inclines were adjusted today).
How do you account for the few seconds it takes to adjust the speed / incline? I feel like it always takes me at least 5 seconds to fully adjust the speed, and perhaps even more time to adjust the incline. My index finger hurts by the end of interval workouts from adjusting the speed button!
I just wanted to ask since today’s workout had some shorter intervals. And holy heck that’s amazing you were running at 10mph!

I just wing it on the treadmill. I don’t ever really have a plan until I hop on it and start running. I never touch the side rails, it would throw me off balance!

I never hold onto the rails because Jillian always yells at the Biggest Loser contestants when they try! I like to write down treadmill intervals but I usually wing it.

i never hold on to the rails and it really irritates me when i see people holding on! it’s really not good to do that… you do the right thing by slowing down!

I have a little notebook that I keep in my gym bag to write all of my workouts in. I have never held onto the siderails of a treadmill!!

True story: I run in my basement and there are times when I get off, get a drink or stretch. I always thought that was cheating but then I remembered that there are no rules when it comes to running for fun.

I love your treadmill workouts and really want to try adding intervals into my cardio, but I’m so scared of going fast on the treadmill! I’m convinced I’ll lose my balance and fall face-first onto the belt. I’m still working my way up to 30-minutes straight jogging (I’m not really at the “running” level yet).

Any suggestions for intervals for scardy cats?

Just curious if you’re doing the Activia challenge (ie eating the yogurt on a regular basis) or having one every one in awhile? I’m curious if it actually regulates the digestive tract as the commercials claim!

no, i’m not! i’d be interested to know that as well. i am already very “regulated” though, so i’m not sure i’d be a good candidate to try. 🙂

You are killing me with the pictures of the Cake Batter ice cream! I’m trying to reduce my desserts and this got me drooling. 😉

BTW. Oatmeal Cookie Chunk really is the best flavor, ever!

    Love your blog!!

I get dizzy trying to read the times, speeds, and incline. I can never focus on the numbers when I am running on a treadmill…supposedly my dad’s has the option to pre-program the treadmill, but I’ve never tried to figure it out.

    Hi Julie!

So, I am about as novice of a treadmill runner as they come. I have been really wanting to give it a whirl though. I was wondering: when you change intervals (ie: going from 5 to 10) are you just pressing the buttons to bring it up? Do you worry that the beep of the machine bothers anyone else? Is there some kind of secret? I just feel like with only 1 minute intervals, all I’d be doing was pressing buttons and not totally focused on the running aspect. Thoughts??

yep! i’m just pressing the buttons manually. i actually like changing things myself BECAUSE it gets my mind off running. i find that changing speeds constantly makes my workout fly by!

No way I could remember treadmill workouts! Definitely have to tear them out of the magazine or print them out and put them on the treadmill.
