Unexpected Stretch

May 3, 2012 by Julie 76 Comments

After I published my morning blog post, I gave myself a little time to digest breakfast before leashing Sadie up for a five-mile run.

ready to run

Her typical morning walk morphed into a run since we both needed to sneak in some exercise today.

It wasn’t even 8:30 a.m. and the Florida heat was already cookin’. It was a hot, slow run, but it felt good to get out there and get moving.

I was in desperate need of a shower after our run and immediately washed off the sweat and came out feeling so fresh and so clean, clean. (<—Outkast, baby!)

As I toweled off, I noticed Sadie sprawled out on our bed.

sleepy dog

(If you think we make our bed every day, you are seriously mistaken.)

tired dog

Please notice the fuzzy, out-of-focus tail in the above picture. You cannot even walk one step toward Sadie without her tail flappin’ around and making the noise of a small propeller. Walk away and it immediately stops. It’s oddly entertaining.

When I saw Sadie looking exhausted on the bed, I thought I actually accomplished the impossible.

Did I out run Sadie?

dog yawn

I actually asked her whether or not I made her tired aloud. Like a crazy.

I got this look in return:

10 miles

She then bounded out of bed and brought me her stuffed pig, trying to entice me into a rousing game of tug-of-war.

One time a fellow vizsla owner told me that vizslas start calming down at age 10. Ten.

Unexpected Stretch

This may be a little odd to share on the blog, but since I tend to overshare as it is and many of you guys are runners, surely one of you have thought of this same thing a time or two before.

Do you ever count shaving as a post-run stretch?

shaving

The ledge in our shower is ridiculously high, so I have to place my leg in an uncomfortably high position when I shave. I love doing this after a run because it gives me an unexpected hamstring stretch that lasts a lot longer than the hamstring stretches I would do on my own.

Showering + Stretching = Multitasking

I followed up my shower stretch with some of my favorite hip stretches before getting ready for the day.

Lunch

I had a late morning meeting today for the Taste of Ocala so lunchtime came a bit early.

pork cauliflower

I felt kind of weird eating pork and roasted cauliflower at 10:50 a.m. (I tend to eat closer to 1 p.m.), but it worked.

I used pork leftover from last night’s dinner and tossed it with roasted cauliflower, olive oil, lime juice, red pepper flakes and fresh cilantro. I got the idea for the flavor combination from the recipe for crispy chicken thighs with cauliflower and cilantro in this month’s Real Simple magazine.

pork lime cilantro

After lunch, I headed out to my Taste of Ocala committee meeting which lasted about two hours. The big event is on Saturday so I’ll be busy tomorrow and Saturday helping to set up. I can’t wait to see everything come to fruition!

Since my meeting took place close to Ryan’s work, we planned for a quick mini-date to Starbucks since I had a coupon for a free drink for my birthday.

starbucks 132-001

Vanilla latte for me!

Ryan ordered a chai crème Frappuccino and sat on the most awkward chair to ever exist in a Starbucks…

starbucks 133-001

Is it a couch? A chair? A futon?

starbucks 134-001

If you sat all the way to the back, the chair would hit you in the middle of your calves. Naturally I laughed at Ryan as he tried to navigate that bad boy.

Before we left, I noticed this sign which I thought would greatly appeal to my fellow Frappuccino lovers and those who love a good deal:

starbucks 131-001

Frappuccino Happy Hour starts tomorrow! Get ‘em while they’re… cold.

I am currently blogging from Starbucks and plan to finish up my work day here. Sometimes getting out of the house is the only way I can concentrate and judging by all of the Sadie pictures that have popped up on the blog today, I’m clearly feeling easily distracted.

Catcha lata!

Hi! I LOVE your blog…this is off topic but I had a question. I love your balanced approach towards exercise and food. I am curious, do you weigh yourself to “keep yourself in check”? Also, do you decided on your workouts based on being consistent and staying more in routine or do you just do whatever your feeling? Thanks =) =)

We had a German short hair, which reminds me of Sadie and she didn’t start calming down EVER. We loved her to death and she was a sweat heart but she even made trails around the INSIDE of my parents house from all the loops she would make during the day (their down stairs is very open and makes a circle).

Doing my blogging from a coffee shop right now as well!

I should have shaved today… I pulled a hammy muscle at the gym today and “shtretching” (shave/stretching) would have helped!

shower stretches are the way to go!!! especially warm showers, because then your muscles are warm and it makes me feel like I’m getting a better stretch than if I was somewhere else! I’m just waiting for the day where my standing leg slips on a bar of soap or something and i get more of a stretch then intended…

I’ve never thought of shower stretching before, but I can totally see it now. I’ll never look at shaving the same way again! haha.

Also, that Frapp happy hour could be very, very dangerous. I feel like a Starbucks addict – I am starting to drool already. I think I have a problem…

I have a 4 year old yellow lab/german Shepard mix and I don’t think he will ever mellow out. And while sometimes I wish he would stop acting like a puppy I’ll be really bummed out the day he’s too old to run around like a crazy man.

I’m 6 months pregnant and its safe to say that everything about trying to shave right now is a work out for me 🙂 Like you though i totally get a little thrill when I realize how efficient I’m being when I’m able to multi-task things like that by accident.

Not to be a Debbie Downer but I was checking out the Starbucks Frapp menu last night since I had heard about the deal. I couldn’t believe how much sugar is in them! I’m not a normal Starbucks drinker but I had no idea that most of those frapps had as much or more sugar in them as the glucola I had to drink for my glucose test. Just kinda blew my mind, and killed my craving…fast.

I feel you when it come to hyper dogs. I have a jack russell mix and he is out of control. He NEVER gets tired. He is always on the move, running laps in the house, jumping on something, chewing anything he can get his teeth on. He even tried to climb a tree once. His energy and curiosity know no bounds. He wears me out every night I get home from work, and when I used to do freelance writing from home, it was a challenge to get anything done.

Stretching in the shower is actually really good for you! I am starting PT school in the fall and in my last pre req class we learned that stretching in the shower is BETTER than stretching after your muscles cool down. The warm water allows your muscles to stay loose and can actually help with soreness. I stretch in the shower all. the. time.

Enjoy Sadie being able to outrun you. I always thought my Jack Russel would be able to out run me forever. Lately he has quit on me several times, I think it is because he is getting older. It makes me sad, but I’m just grateful that he is still extremely healthy!

We have a Vizsla mix and she’s still going strong at 9 years old! We actually got her at the humane society and she has been the best dog ever. Do you keep Sadie in a cage while you are gone? We have to keep ours in a cage during the day while we’re at work b/c she destroys the couches, carpet, floors, doors, etc. with her scratching.

My family has a (rat?) terrier (I don’t believe he’s a rat terrier, but that’s what we tell everyone). He’s 12 and is just now starting to slow down. He still gets puppy-like bursts of energy every now and again, though. Personally I’m all right with that, because I’d like to believe my dog will live forever.

i’m often more productive when i get out of the house every once in awhile too. i went over to starbucks the other day to work on some stuff because our internet was out. i was initially so annoyed that i had to go, but afterward i got SO much done in a short time. i realized i should do that more often!
