Video Julie comin’ at ya!
During my trip to Fresno to tour the POM factory and visit the pomegranate orchards, I learned how to properly cut open a pomegranate and get to those delicious, juicy lil’ arils.

As promised, I created a little video tutorial about how to properly score and cut open a pomegranate so you guys can successfully enjoy the tasty arils as well.
Sadie clearly wanted to be my assistant as I was making this video last night.
I ramble a bit in the video, but hopefully you’ll learn a little somethin’ somethin’ about cutting into a fruit that can be a bit intimidating.
Let me know if you guys try this out!
Happy pomegranating!

this is great…i love pomegranates but those suckers are intimidating to get out! oh, and you’re adorable. the end

I’ve never had those little seeds, but I have read so many times that they are so great for your skin!
Lisa
Thanks for the tutorial Julie! I actually knew about the water bowl but had no idea how to cut in the sections, super helpful! This is going to be the incentive that I need to buy the pomegranates I keep avoiding at the store

Great timing- I bought a pom after seeing your posts and recently watched someone else’s youtube video on how to properly open it!
Liz @ Blog is the New black
SOOOO could have used this video Sunday night! Good thing we have another pomegranate to tackle later this week – they were on sale at Publix – 2/$4.
Jess
Thank you for making this!! I definitely could have used it this weekend, I tried my best to cut one open without a clue and things got a little messy!
Bess @ Bess Be Fit
Yum, I love pomegranates! I usually bring them to work and end up spraying pom juice all over the kitchen in my attempt to free every aril from captivity – and then pop it into my mouth.
Thanks for the video – I had been doing something like that, so at least I know I wasn’t totally off base!
Have a great day!
Kattrina
i’m eating one for lunch today!!
Jessica @ How Sweet
Love this!!! And you and Sadie
Meg
lol…loved your video…and Sadie! Your apron is to cute!
I have never bought a pomegranate before either, but I might now. The kids might like the arils
Lynn

Holly @ couchpotatoathlete
How did you know that I murdered one the on Sunday and was thinking to myself “there has to be a better way to do this!” Thanks for the video!
Erin
Love the video! How cute is Sadie!
I only attempted cutting a pomegranate once, and it was a disaster. It was great to see how to do it properly. Thanks!
Laura
Seriously, cutest apron ever and I love Sadie!
Kelly
Thanks Julie! soo after you told me to soak the pomegranate in water I did…but I stuck the whole fruit in the bowl. Lol now it all makes sense.
Kaitlyn
Now I can finally buy a pomegranate!! Thank you! Cute apron by the way…I thought it was a fancy dress. Sadie is adorable!
Jaime
Sadie is so cute! Thanks for the video!
Jess
Great video, you’re a natural!
Merri
Thanks! Your video was really helpful, and my four year old twins think Sadie was the best part
annette
i agree w/ your twins!
peanutbutterfingers
I love the video! So cute! I’ll definitely try cutting them up that way because we have a pomegranate tree in our back yard and the fruit is just starting to get ripe. I went to a cooking class at the Culinary Institute of America in Napa and they told us the bast way to get the arils out is to quarter it and whack the shell with a spoon and (no joke) it makes the HUGEST mess I have ever seen. This way looks way less messy.
Julie
that sounds like a recipe for disaster!
peanutbutterfingers
Thanks! I always make the biggest mess and now I see I was cutting them wrong. Every time I eat one of those and I take out all the ariels, I wonder how they all fit into the fruit. I feel like there are SO MANY.
Rachel
Thanks for the video!! I bought some pomegranates at kroger the other week because they were on sale for $1!! (can you believe that price?!) but they’ve been sitting in my fridge since I’ve been a little intimated to eat them
but this makes it so much easier!! thanks so much!
Taylor
I thought the video was great! Sadie is hilarious too. I love how she just jumps right up into your arms
Christina @ Food.Fun.Fabulous
I bought some pomegranate arils from the supermarket yesterday – nice!
reader
That was so cute and funny! ‘You know like seven’. So hilarious! Nice job Julie
laura
How fun! Okay, maybe not. But it looks like you could make anything fun.
Amber K
I love your apron! Thanks for the tutorial
.
Charlie
Perfect timing for this vid! I just bought my first pom over the weekend (although I’ve eaten them before…just never had to “work” for it) and, of course, made a giant mess trying to get to all the arils. Thank you! Totally love how inquisitive Sadie is in your tutorial…my dog is exactly the same (hmmm probably because he jumps on the counter all the time when we are gone!)
Erica
That apron is adorable. I need one like it! Do you by chance know the brand it says on the tag? I saw above that you had received it as a gift and that it’s from Ross, but I definitely want more details!
Chicago Cuisine Critique
can’t wait to watch the video when i get home! (don’t want to watch it in a public computer lab on campus!)
Sarah K. @ the Pajama Chef
What a hot hot hot apron
Shanna, Like Banana

Melissa
Ah, so cute! I love how Sadie makes an appearance.

Thank you Julie for that video! I am loving these videos you are making. It’s fun to see your personality (and Sadie’s) after reading your blog for so long. You’ve definitely encouraged me to eat some Pommys! Can’t wait until your next video tutorial! Keep them coming!
Kristen
I saw some pomegranates the other day and was saying to myself “what in the world do you do with that.” but since ur trip I am intrigued by those little arils. I may pick one up today and give it a try.
Melissa
You look so happy!
That’s always great to see. I’m glad you enjoy life and have such a great time.
I actually just bought two poms from the market the other day, so now I can cut them with my newly-found skills! Thanks!
Natalia Baage
Thank you so much, I never knew how to cut a pom
Racheal

Janette
Thank you so much for making this video!! It helped so much and I loved cutting open my FIRST pomegranate!!! It was great!! And I’m definitely going to open them and eat them more often
Shelby
Julie!!
Where did you get the adorable apron?!?!
Jessica
Hey- I realize I am a little late commenting on this video, but I wanted to tell you another trick I learned when I was in India. You can just start by cutting off the crown but then place the pomegranate in a bowl of water (submerged completely). Using your hands, just slowly peel away the outer layer and gently loosen the arils. It is very easy and there’s no mess. Then just remove the arils from the water.
Kate
Agreed! I was just going to post this same comment! This is definitely the best way. Except slice thin lacerations along the membranes, like you did in the video, but not all the way through. Then place it into the bowl of water for several minutes, this will soften the core so it’s MUCH easier to peel apart!
I’m surprised they didn’t teach this method at the plantation!
