Burlesque Dancing at Studio K

December 17, 2010 by Julie 33 Comments

What do you get when you give a big group of girls boas and chairs and some music that makes you wanna pop, lock and drop it?burlesque 010 Burlesque dancing!

This evening, my friends Merri, Cherayne and I headed to Studio K, a dance studio in Orlando, for a night of fun, sexy dancing. burlesque 011I first learned about the burlesque dance class from Katy Widrick, the most social media-savvy woman I know.

From Katy’s blog, I know she’s an avid dancer, so I was a little apprehensive about tonight’s class and worried that I would feel totally lost and embarrassed by my lack of coordination.

I always wanted to be a dancer but never quite had the coordination to master eight-counts. But don’t worry… That doesn’t stop me from bustin’ a move on the dance floor!041_DancingWe arrived at the class a little after 7 p.m. and quickly found spots toward the back of the class. (Front of the class = No bueno for timid dancers. 🙂 )

The instructor for the evening did a great job of creating a routine that wasn’t too intense for beginner dancers like me. Still, her routine was fast-paced, challenging and extremely fun!

The class learned a routine to the song “Burlesque” from the new movie and by the end of the night I basically fell in love with that song! Definitely on my “must download” list!

With such quick moves, awesome music and a fun routine, the two-hour dance class flew by. Merri, Cherayne and I all agreed we had an absolute blast! I loved trying a new style of dance and a new type of exercise.

I hope Studio K hosts some more theme-night dance classes because I would love to go back!

Off to hang with Ryan for the rest of the night. Thank goodness it’s the weekend!

I danced from the time I was 3 until I was 12…and then my family moved and I just stuck with soccer and basketball after that, but I love dancing…we definitely got down in the locker room before and after games 🙂 I wanna take dance classes again so badly!

That sounds so fun. I’ve always wanted to try burlesque!

I love dancing, and have recently started doing Zumba – it’s fun AND gets my heart pumping. Pretty sure I look like a crazy person trying to keep up with the fast pace, but you are so focused on getting the moves right that you don’t notice how other people dance – so they must not notice me either (fingers crossed!) 🙂

    I love dancing!
I’m Mexican, we pretty much grow up dancing to all sorts of Latin music so it’s something boys and girls learn as little tots.
Salsa, merengue, polka, mambo, waltz, cha-cha, two-step, cumbia, etc…
I lucked out that my Mister also knows how to and loves to dance with me! Even though we only get to dance our feet off at parties we definitely consider ourselves to be dancers!
Dancing to “American” music is hard for me though, I feel it’s more abstract, freeform and like I don’t know how to move whereas Latin music has it’s specific steps for each rhythm that I know and I have a partner.

That’s so fun! I’m way too shy to bust a move in front of anyone but I’ve always wished I could be a sexy dancer…doesn’t every girl?

I want to see that movie!

I love dancing! I’ve taken ballet, tap, and African lessons years ago, but now enjoy dancing in the privacy of my own home, or during occasional club-hopping with my girlfriends. I’ve done Zumba but the moves can be complicated! The ‘Burlesque’ coreography sounds fun 🙂
Side note – at weddings, my boyfriend and I morph into ‘ridiculous dancer’ mode. It’s like we all of a sudden get talented! We love to ‘practice’ our jump / spin combos when everyone else clears the floor. We are actually good at it! Picture ‘Dirty Dancing’ type jumps, but with two slightly intoxicated people. Lol!

Ahhh that sounds like SO much fun! I’m not a very coordinated dancer, but I really like feeling the energy of a bunch of people who don’t care what they look like having fun on a dance floor.

I’d actually really like to join a burlesque class; I’ll have to see if there are any in my metro area. 😉 Thanks for the inspiration!

I love to dance, I can get down to usher but when it comes to something like this I’d be pretty darn uncoordinated. Looks like a fun time though! As long as your with friends its fun to let loose and not care what the “real” dancers in there think!

I am SO glad you came last night — what a blast!

I always laugh when people say I’m coordinated or a good dancer. I learned long ago just to NOT CARE about the steps, and do my very best to stay with the beat…after that, I just love to shake my hips and drop it like it’s hot.

I know it’s a little deep for dancing, but doing sexy moves like the Burlesque dance make me feel sexy…even if I don’t look it!

I do like dancing, I think you just have to throw caution to the wind and have fun. I have one dance, I can do it to fast music, slow music, country music, hip hop. I suspect I look a little like Elaine on Seinfield, but I don’t care.

Secondly, crazy that you wrote about dancing, because I just commented on The Fitnessista’s post about Black Swan on how I wish I would have had the opportunity to pursue dancing.
