Chaotic Run

December 3, 2011 by Julie 51 Comments

What happens when you take two spastic dogs on a run?

Chaos. Pure and simple.

Late this morning, I changed into running gear to take Sadie and Kona on a five-mile run around our neighborhood.

chocolate oats 045

Notice how Sadie is right by my side? She’s been my little Mini Me all day in an effort to make sure Kona doesn’t take her place in my heart.

chocolate oats 054

Literally glued to my hip.

I was a little overdressed for the weather (it was 61 degrees), but I was anxious to try out my new Lole long-sleeved running top that I got one sale through RueLaLa a couple weeks ago.

chocolate oats 046

FYI, if you sign up for RueLaLa this week, you get a $10 credit toward your first purchase! For total transparency, I will also get a $10 credit if you buy something, as will you if you refer someone! (It’s their standard referral program, which rocks!)

Once I was dressed and ready to go, I leashed up the pups and we headed out.

It was a little rocky at first… and by at first, I mean for the first three miles.

Kona is significantly larger than Sadie, so when she stopped to sniff something, if I didn’t notice and kept running, my arm was practically pulled out of its socket as I was yanked back.

dog smelling pee

And then there was the weaving, getting excited about other dogs in the neighborhood, squirrels… all the usual distractions which, when you’re running with one dog, don’t interfere with a run too much, but when you’re running with two, every distraction becomes a bit of a production.

But a fun production.

I laughed my way through our run because I know I must’ve looked absolutely ridiculous as I tried to maneuver the leashes and prevent them from tangling, while also trying not to trip.

The last two miles of our run were pretty smooth compared to the first three and we finished our five miles in one piece.

Then it was time for some fetch in the backyard because these dogs have an insatiable appetite for exercise.

It was fun to have another dog to photograph!

Taking pictures of dogs may be one of my favorite things to do because when you get a good one, it feels like you captured their wonderful personality in one shot!

After playtime and a hot shower, I was ready for pizza!

Lunch

Lunch today included a frozen margherita pizza, served with a side of leftover roasted Brussels sprouts and onions.

I know what you mean about having two spastic dogs running by your side… We have two labs that love every person, dog, and especially cat that they see. This means I practically fall on my face when they both book it toward whatever they see. It is quite hilarious!

I love it! We have two dogs, and my parents have 3, and when we are home for the holidays my mom and I leash up all the monsters together and go running. It is a ridiculous awesome mess! They all have their spots and run in the same order (and are so upset if someone is in the wrong place) but if a squirrel runs by its total chaos!

Its best during hunting season, because they all wear little orange vests (we take them in the woods too, no hunting allowed there but we always figure better safe than sorry!) Its precious!

Sadie does not like having to fight for attention–typical only dog syndrome! She looks so sad in the one picture where she is sitting in front of you. Is that a California Pizza Kitchen pizza? Cause if so those are the best frozen pizzas!

I don’t know how you did that! I take my roomates 10 pound pup for runs sometimes and it’s chaos no matter what tactics I use!
It’s just like having a kid though because she is SO much calmer the rest of the day once you get her out to play a little bit…or when it’s an 8 mile run, a LOT a bit 😉

haha I love this. I have a huge hound/pit mix who is the ultimate cuddlier and a choc lab that looks just like Kona. Well, my lab is crazy nuts and runs like a maniac for the first mile or two, but then calms down, I walk both of them together and they are both huge (65 and 75 pounds) and I literally get my arms ripped out of socket multiple times a walk- esp when they smell prior dog pee, see a squirrel, rabbit, person, etc. I too laugh my way though every walk because I know I look like a total fool….but I adore my pups so I don’t care. They are just so happy to be out and about! Sadie and Kona are adorable!!

Haha sounds like an interesting run to say the least! Perhaps the dogs added an upper body workout to your run?

My only experience running with my dog was..errr…antichaotic? She laid down in the grass 10 minutes in….while I was still running!

I laughed outloud at the “yorkie pee” comment. Too funny! I’ve tried running with my mom’s dog before, but it is seriously impossible … she wants to stop and sniff every 2 seconds, so you can’t have a consistent run!

Right when I saw that first picture of Kona, I thought to myself, “man, she takes such AWESOME dog photos..she could definitely be a professional dog photographer (on the side, of course).” Whenever I pull the camera out, my dog looks away 🙁 so you either have one heck of a knack for photographing dogs, or Sadie is one big ol’ camera loving pup. I love the one of Sadie in the mirror..TOO FUNNY! She is just so dang cute.

Hi! I just started reading your blog and I love it! I have a quick, kind of off topic question. I’m trying to figure out the best running gps to buy. I see you have the Garmin Forerunner 305. Does it track the amount of calories you burn? I really want one that does that and I can’t seem to find a straight answer about it. Thanks! PS…I have a chocolate lab named Kona who I take running too. 🙂

Ha ha this is great! I went from one-dog running to two-dog running about a year ago and it was certainly an adventure at first! I have two (big) dogs and sometimes they are very persistent to smell things in opposite directions at the same time which gives me a nice shoulder stretch on both sides 😉

My shining star moment was when I actually took my sister’s dog out as well and ran with three! Yes, there is photographic evidence and yes, I have only attempted that once.

On a random note.. pretty sure I had the same frozen margherita pizza for lunch today too. CPK ha!

We have two dogs. One is 90% pitbull and 10% lab. The other is just a mutt. Between them two, they weigh about 140 pounds. And 90% pitbull? He is all muscle. Needless to say they don’t get walked very often. I can’t walk him on his own with the way he tugs – let alone them both. It’s something we are slowly working on.

Good job taking them both out and surviving!
