Morning with Mom

October 14, 2014 by Julie 35 Comments

My mom has been in town for less than 24 hours and we’ve already packed in a lot of activities! We headed out a little before 8 a.m. to take a morning Jazzercise class.

As long-time readers likely know, my mom  has been a big-time fan of Jazzercise since 1985. My sister and I love taking classes with her whenever we have the chance and the three of us actually attended the Jazzercise Tropic Heat conference when it came to Orlando two years ago. I absolutely love the upbeat atmosphere of Jazzercise and as someone who loves to dance but is terrible with choreography, I appreciate the way the class combines dance and aerobics in a way that’s easy to follow.

Jazzercise Intensity Chart

I know Jazzercise has a reputation for being an ‘80s workout for older women, but I truly think that it is one of the most fun workout classes out there. If it sounds like something you’d enjoy, I highly encourage you to grab a friend and take a class. I bet you will have a blast!

I actually wore my heart rate monitor during today’s class because I’ve received a few questions about the intensity level of Jazzercise and the calorie burn in a typical Jazzercise class in the past.

Calories Burned in Jazzercise

In the 55-minute class, I burned right around 470 calories. Not too shabby, huh!?

We took the 8:30 a.m. class at a local studio and had the best time. The instructor, Angela, was enthusiastic and had the whole class laughing and smiling. Angela was so spunky and definitely added to the enjoyment of the class!

After Jazzercise, my mom and I thanked the instructor and drove to Davidson for breakfast.

Davidson, North Carolina

We grabbed a table at Toast which is quickly becoming our go-to breakfast spot. I just love it! The atmosphere is friendly and the food is great. No complaints!

I ordered two eggs with fruit, ham and multigrain toast and made myself a breakfast sandwich with the eggs, toast and ham.

Toast Davidson

I had no trouble clearing my plate. Yum!

We couldn’t leave Davidson without meandering in and out of some of the adorable shops and I walked away with a new fall flag for our flag pole.

Before driving home, we wanted to pick up some food for the week and I remembered reading Brittany’s post about a new Publix opening in Huntersville, so we decided to swing by for a little taste of Florida!

Publix Huntersville NC

Publix was, hands down, our favorite grocery store in Ocala and I’m so happy a handful of them are popping up in the Charlotte area. They’re the best!

Since the store just opened, there were free samples everywhere which was pretty awesome. Subs, sushi, cupcakes and more. Don’t mind if I do!

Now we’re back at home and I wanted to say a quick hello to you guys before it’s time for me to head off to Girls on the Run!

Enjoy the rest of your Tuesday and I’ll see ya in the morning!

Thank you so much for posting about Jazzercise! I was an instructor for 2 years and even though I’m not right now, it’s still one of my favorite workouts. One of the most frustrating things is people assuming that Jazzercise is just for older ladies (I’m 23). There’s always new routines to new music and you can get a really good workout! I loved inviting people that laughed to my class and then totally kicking their butts! So thank you so much for posting this!

Love that you and your mom work together when you get the chance! Definitely a great way to bond and be healthy at the same time. Those shops look amazing and I wish we had some of them up this way. Getting unique and fun items to bring out your personality in your home are the best!

I’ve never taken Jazzercize, but it sounds like a blast! Totally something I would love… what a lovely breakfast! Poached eggs I see? That’s how I like mine!

Yes! I love ordering poached eggs when I go out to eat because I, for some reason, can never make them right at home!

You’re so right, when I think of jazzercise I think of the 80s! I used to do it when I was a kid to the show Mousercise. Crazy how I just remembered that! Anyway, sounds like it was super fun!

I’ve never tried Jazzercise (I’ve never seen it offered at a gym I’ve gone to) but it really does sound like fun – dance and aerobics fitness classes are my favorite!

Hmmm I wonder if Publix is a lot like Albertson’s or Ralphs, if you know those two (cali thing for the most part) Everyone seems to love Publix though. And I think it’s awesome your mom pursues an active lifestyle! To be honest, I don’t know of many older adults who like to stay healthy through exercise. My mom is all about healthy food but not too much exercise outside of all the running around she does in her store! 😛

I love getting breakfast with my mom and sister and then doing a little shopping! Another teacher in my school teaches jazzercise and she loves what a solid workout it packs! She even leads an after school jazzercise club for the kids and they perform in our school talent show every year! So fun!

I freaking LOVE Jazzercise 🙂 I go every day that they offer the free childcare (M-F), and on the weekends if I can get my husband to watch our daughter. The dance studio is my happy place! And I just turned 30, it is soooooooooo not an 80’s workout!

Hi Julie! I love it that you and your mom take Jazzercise together. My mom has been going since 1990 and I started going with her when I was in jr. high. I am now a 31 year old instructor and I hate that people think it’s not a good workout! It’s so fun and such great mother/daughter quality time. I also used to live in Florida and I miss Publix SO much!
