Video: How to Cut Open a Pomegranate

October 26, 2010 by Julie 63 Comments

Video Julie comin’ at ya!

During my trip to Fresno to tour the POM factory and visit the pomegranate orchards, I learned how to properly cut open a pomegranate and get to those delicious, juicy lil’ arils.

pom orchards 066pomAs promised, I created a little video tutorial about how to properly score and cut open a pomegranate so you guys can successfully enjoy the tasty arils as well.

Sadie clearly wanted to be my assistant as I was making this video last night. 😉

I ramble a bit in the video, but hopefully you’ll learn a little somethin’ somethin’ about cutting into a fruit that can be a bit intimidating.

Let me know if you guys try this out!

Hey- I realize I am a little late commenting on this video, but I wanted to tell you another trick I learned when I was in India. You can just start by cutting off the crown but then place the pomegranate in a bowl of water (submerged completely). Using your hands, just slowly peel away the outer layer and gently loosen the arils. It is very easy and there’s no mess. Then just remove the arils from the water. 🙂

Agreed! I was just going to post this same comment! This is definitely the best way. Except slice thin lacerations along the membranes, like you did in the video, but not all the way through. Then place it into the bowl of water for several minutes, this will soften the core so it’s MUCH easier to peel apart!
I’m surprised they didn’t teach this method at the plantation! 🙂
