Week of Workouts: September 2017

September 25, 2017 by Julie 24 Comments

Monday is here and I’m hoping the week ahead will be a good one. After a two-month hiatus (oops, sorry about that), I’m back in action today with my Weekly Workouts series! I didn’t meant to take so much time off between posts but life got in the way. Now that it’s the last week of September, I figured I better sneak in a quick Weekly Workout recap for this month before I missed this one, too!

Weekly Workouts

Last week was a good one in terms of my workouts. I felt consistent and while the variety wasn’t overly amazing – you’ll see a lot of Burn Boot Camp workouts! –  that didn’t bother me too much since BBC does a great job of changing things up and including a great combination of varied strength and cardio workouts.

Week of Workouts

Monday: Upper Body Strength Circuit

Upper Body Strength Workout Burn Boot Camp

I LOVE it when Burn Boot Camp programs a strength workout to kick off the week because I am rarely in the mood for an intense cardio session on a Monday morning. This workout reminded me a lot of the workouts I create for myself when I make up my own workouts to do at the gym, so clearly I was a big fan of the fast-paced circuit format.

Tuesday: Core Conditioning Stack

Core Workout

I went into Tuesday’s workout with a chip on my shoulder because I usually HATE stack workouts with a passion. I find them so redundant since you repeat the base of the workout a bazillion times and slowly add something new to the mix. Thankfully Tuesdays workout wasn’t as horrible as I anticipated since our trainer incorporated some running outside (crucial for a change of pace/scenery) and we completed the stack with a partner. To do this workout, partner one completed the top exercise and served as the counter while partner two completed the second exercise until partner one was done with their reps. We then moved onto the second superset but repeated the first superset again before completing the second superset. (See what I mean about redundancy.) For the third round, we started at the top, made our way through the top three supersets and then the final round included all four supersets. In between each round, we ran for 30 seconds-1 minute for a burst of cardio.

Wednesday: Leg Workout

Burn Boot Camp Leg Workout

I woke up for an early morning workout on Wednesday because I had a blogging event to go to while Chase was at preschool and when I walked into the gym, I quickly realized I was the only one there for the 6:30 a.m. class. The ONLY one. I was shocked because I’ve never seen less than eight people at a BBC workout! I debated going home to give the trainer a break and also save myself some of the awkwardness that I knew I’d feel when one trainer was trying to channel all of the energy required to teach a group class into a single person. And then, a minute before the class began, another woman arrived and we joked about being the only two and I not-so-secretly exhaled a big sigh of relief. Thankfully the workout ended up being a great one and I left feeling happy I didn’t bolt out of the gym like I initially wanted to!

Thursday: Biceps, Triceps and Shoulders Superset

Burn Boot Camp Bicep Tricep Shoulder Workout

YESSSSS!!! I LOVED this workout. Last summer BBC went through a Commit To Fit challenge and while I didn’t participate in the meal plan aspect of the program, I loved the way the program focused more heavily on heavy lifting. This workout reminded me of that challenge and my arms were toast by the end. I went through the workout with my friend Trisha who always pushes me to lift heavier and work harder. She’s so athletic and I love pairing up with her because she makes me set bigger goals for myself in the gym. The workout was a dropset format (also my fav!) and while partner one counted reps in the first exercise, partner two performed the second exercise. We then switched and when partner one got back to the first exercise, the reps decreased by 2. We went through as many rounds of each superset as possible in five minutes, decreasing the reps each time.

Friday: Speed, Balance and Agility

Speed and Agility Burn Boot Camp Workout

After a rather strength-heavy first half of the week, it felt great to work up a serious sweat and get in some more intense cardio during Friday’s workout. You know it’s a great workout when you’re dreaming of a shower the minute it’s over! This workout incorporated a lot of running but in very short bursts and since I was feeling rather energetic on Friday morning, it was right up my alley. I also tried hard to break my PR for double unders and ended up tying it at 32. Ah! SOOO close. Those things kill me!

Saturday: Total Body

Total Body Workout

Quite often both Saturday and Sunday will be rest days from the gym around here but when our weekend plans are a little calmer, I love kicking off the weekend with a good workout. Since Friday’s workout was mostly cardio-based, I figured I’d do a little bit of everything at the gym on Saturday and made up a total body workout while I was warming up on the treadmill with a 10 minute incline walk. I LOVED this workout and felt like it did a good job of making me sweat while hitting all of my major muscle groups. A great way to begin a Saturday!

Sunday: Off

Sunday is almost always a rest day over here and we filled our day with church, grocery shopping, a little bit of time on the lake and some much-needed rest and relaxation.

Question of the Day

Have you ever been the only one to show up for a group exercise class? Did you stay?

I can’t believe you were almost the only one at 6:30, I would think the morning times would be popular to workout before work! I teach a 5:45 AM Body Pump class and I guess there’s usually only about 8 people in it. I wish I could get more people into working out in the morning, it’s such a great way to start the day!

Me too! I was so surprised! Apparently the 5 a.m. and 5:30 a.m. classes are popular but they recently switched the 6:15 class to 6:30 and that really impacted attendance. I think they are going to switch it back soon!

No, I have never done a group workout class. I’m more of a hide in your house and workout there kinda girl! The workouts sound amazing, though & I really need to get back my motivation! This helped. Thanks & have a great week!

I once was the only person in a yoga class, but at the last minute someone else came in. I didn’t know the yoga teacher either, and thought it would be so awkward! But, I ended up loving it since I got so much one on one instruction. : )

Comment from Friday. The book Confessions of a Domestic Failure is hysterical. I, too, needed a break from WWII historical fiction.

I would have totally left if I was the only person at a group workout class just like you would’ve. The poor trainer was probably thinking the same thing as you until the other lady showed up! Although it could’ve been a cool experience since it would have almost been like a personal training session and you would’ve gotten a ton of attention for form.

I hope you had a great weekend and that today is a good day, Julie!

I once thought I was the only one for a GF class, but a few more people showed up just as it was starting! What a relief!

Looks like an awesome week of workouts. I have never been the only participant in a class before, but have taught class and had only one person show up. It felt a little awkward at first, but ended up feeling like a personal training session.

It’s super awkward to be the only one in a class! Although I liked small classes when I did crossfit because it meant more individualized instruction 🙂
Thanks for sharing the back/core workout – that is something I really need to work on!
    Enjoy your day!

I loved these workout recap posts – thank you for putting them together! I have been the only one to show up to a group fitness class a few times, and I always stay! I used to be a personal trainer and I know that I personally loved to do one-on-one sessions as opposed to group, so I always try to learn as much as possible when I have the instructor’s attention on me alone. It can definitely be awkward, but I think it’s also a great opportunity.

I live in a little town in WA state and I wish I had access to classes like BBC in my area! We have a couple different gym options but I feel like I get more motivation from working out in a group setting. I did a boot camp style class for a little while (I worked shift work and my schedule didn’t always allow me to make the class time) and I always remember seeing what was on the white board and thinking, URGH this is going to take forever…and I will surely die, haha. But I always finished and the feeling after getting a good sweat on always feels so amazing and becomes almost addicting!

Also, I have a little gift package I would like to send you and am wondering if you have a P.O. Box or mailing address I could send it to?

I just realized I probably sound like I creeper, lol. But I promise I’m just a reader who has been following a long time. When I went through a miscarriage there were so many days I didn’t want to get out of bed and at the time, my routine was to wake up and grab my phone to read my news feed, and it was your blog posts I always looked forward to. You have a gift of connecting to your readers like old friends! So I saw some things and I thought of you, as I would any other friend, thinking they were things you may like and bought them, but I did not think through how I was going to get them to you! I’ve just had a friend send something similar and loved it so I hope I can get this out to you!

As a yoga instructor I say take advantage and stay!! You’re getting one-on-one training for the price of a group class. I’ve taught “accidental private lessons” as I call them a handful of times, and it never ends up being as awkward as you might think going into it. Everyone is different, but I end up leaving it much more open to special requests / questions. Plus, I’m already there…I’d rather stay and teach for an hour than drive 15 minutes back home and only make less than half my usual rate 😉

I have definitely been the only one before and it depends on instructor. I always STAY. but it’s not always the greatest HA. But if I love the instructor and actively try to be more chatty it’s great.

As an instuctor… this can be my biggest nightmare if its someone who is shy/quiet. I try extra hard to draw that person out,… sometimes it works and I have so much fun – like I’m just working out with a friend 🙂

So PSA to all… please try if it’s just you. Working out is supposed to be the best part of your day – lighten up, loosen up and laugh! Your personal trainer for the hour will thank you 🙂

I finally had the chance to take Body Pump on Saturday morning! Our gym just started offering it & Body Flow. I loved it! By the end, shoulder set I was dying. Those weights felt like 100 lbs each. Can’t wait for the next class.

I’m a fitness instructor and there have definitely been times when there is only 1 person in class! Of course, I understand how it may seem awkward but my clients generally end up LOVING being the only one. It’s like personal training but at a fraction of the cost and it allows me to watch their form and push their limits even more! It’s a win-win for everyone involved 🙂

Love the work outs you posted! I travel a lot for work and its nice to have the variety with me on the road.
When I was newer to working out (and struggling a LOT) I was the only student in a class taught by a very very popular instructor. I stayed but didn’t really appreciate all the attention back then. Years later I am still taking her classes and what I wouldn’t give now for all that one on one attention and knowledge! I would happily be the only student in class with any of my instructors (and I already have a wonderful trainer too) just for the opportunity to increase my knowledge and abilities (and have fun too).

This seems like SUCH an awesome week of workouts! You totally kill it in the gym! I’m not much for group classes, but I’d also peace out if I was the only one who showed. Haha. And my favorite workout this past week would have to be the upper body circuit + 2 mile run I found on your blog! I love the “cardio sandwich” aspect. Kicking off and ending the workout with a burst of sweat is my favorite!

I’ve been working on gaining distance in my running again so some of my favorite workouts lately have been the longer(ish) runs that have felt really good. The 5 and 5.5 mile runs right now have felt good!

I’ve been 1:1 before and it was great. Total attention and could really work on what I wanted. I’ve also had it be two other people and the instructor has always been great giving us more attention and frankly a better workout!

That happened to me once at a boot camp class. I stayed b/c it was like a personal training session for free!

What was your favorite workout of the week last week?
My favorite workout was being able to workout!! I am recovering from an injury so I am thankful I can ease back into it. I was able to take a barre class and I LOVED it. I plan to incorporate more barre exercises into my workout regime.
