A New Grocery Shopping Strategy

April 15, 2012 by Julie 136 Comments

Good afternoon!

A typical Sunday for the Fagan family includes three things:

  • Church
  • Grocery shopping
  • Extra long walks with Sadie

Three things I enjoy very much! Although, if I’m being honest, I enjoy grocery shopping with Ryan only most of the time.

green bags groceries

There’s a small percentage of our grocery shopping adventures together that aren’t all that fantastic. These grocery shopping trips occur when I am in a browsing mood and feel like taking my time wandering the aisles. This is basically Ryan’s worst nightmare.

When I am taking “forever” (his words, not mine), Ryan stands at the end of the aisles giving me the “hurry up” eyes as I pick up fun foods and show them to him to try to get him excited about a new recipe idea that “just came to me” thanks to my browsing. He is not amused (unless it involves Oreos).

Fortunately, we’ve recently devised a new grocery shopping strategy. Ryan waits at the deli counter for deli meat while I get a head start on my browsing.

The Publix deli can be very backed up (waiting 10 – 15 minutes is normal on a Sunday after church), so the new plan is going very well so far. I take my time leisurely browsing for 15 minutes or so until we meet back up and it’s go-go-go. We speed through the aisles, grabbing Greek yogurt and peanut butter and kicking up dust as we zoom past other shoppers, knocking their carts over and scaring small children.

Lunch

After successfully grocery shopping this morning, we headed home ready for lunch.

I used a box of Annie Chun’s organic peanut sesame meal starters kit as the base for a pasta dish that included chicken thighs, green pepper, spinach and eggplant.

Ryan and I both loved the sauce… probably because the first ingredient in the sauce is peanut butter. Naturally.

I wanted something sweet after I polished off my noodle bowl, so I also had a small apple.

And no, I didn’t wear a Nike dri-fit tank top to church. Nor did I wear it to workout today. I just always throw my hair up and change into comfy clothes immediately when I walk into the door if I know I won’t need to look nice for the rest of the day. Ryan is the exact same way. You’ll never find us lounging in “real” clothes.

Now I’m hoping to take Sadie on an afternoon hike with Ryan before doing some chores around the house and baking. Cocoa oatmeal cookies are sounding awfully appealing at the moment!

Questions of the Afternoon

  • Do you lounge in your “nice clothes” or change into comfy clothes immediately when you get home?
  • If you grocery shop with someone else, do you have any “shopping strategies?”

Be sure to follow PBFingers on Instagram and Facebook!

I'd love to connect with you! I am always so grateful when you let me know you tried one of my recipes or workouts and tag me in your photos or updates. Thank you so much!!!

Literally the first thing I do when I walk in the door from work, school, church, whatever is put on yoga pants and a t shirt or sweat shirt. I never look nice at home! haha. I have to dress up everyday for life and I get tired of it! I run errands looking haggard too….and usually sweaty from a workout. Cute I know!

Heck, if I don’t have to go out, I stay in my jammies, LOL!

My husband hates grocery shopping. Even just going to together to pick up a few things, he’s way ahead and leaving me to carry everything. I do major grocery shop a month and I don’t take him with me. I get to take my time to check nutrition labels and comparison shop. I love grocery shopping, but I love it even more without the hubby there, LOL!

My fiancé is the same way!! I am blessed in the fact that he wants to go shopping with me and share the responsibility, but we have to specify whether it is a “browsing day” or a “fast and furious” day. On fast and furious days we divide and conquer and he gets produce and I do meat/dairy and we meet in the middle. in and out in about twenty minutes, which makes up for the hour or so browsing days about once a month! Compromise!!

Comfy clothes are put on within minutes of being home. One days where we aren’t going anywhere until later in the day you will not see me out of workout capris and hoodies or tank tops!
Since my husband is super picky about his apples, he takes a while to do that so I go through the rest of the produce while he does that.

Our grocery shopping spans two or three stores. We always go to Fresh Market after church for meat and fresh produce but hit up Wal-Mart for everything else (because it’s so much cheaper there). And sometimes I end up going to Publix during the week because it’s the closest store. Fun! ha.

And we’re the same way – the first thing we do when we get home for the day is put on “comfy clothes.”

I’m surprised you haven’t heard of it. Fooducate is an app (on i-phone or andriod) that allows you to scan bar codes on different food items and the app grades the item and then offers 5 to 10 other healthier alternatives. You can scan the app or type in an item. Go to http://www.fooducate.com. It seriously changed the way I grocery shop. (Wow, I sound like a sales rep for it, don’t I?) Have a great day!

Regarding grocery shopping, if I don’t have a list made before I walk in the store, it’s browsing all the way. I usually make the list by aisle so we can be efficient. The worst trips are when I’m in the mood for dessert (aka ice cream) and it turns into a junk food run. Oops!

My roommates in college always laughed at me because I always change into comfy pants the minute I get home. Sometimes I don’t mind the shirt, so I’ll have a nice top with sweatpants. Looks ridiculous, but so comfy!

I went to the grocery store with my boyfriend today after work. He really wasn’t excited about it but only went in with me (I told him he could stay outside and read in the car if he wanted) because otherwise “I would take two hours and come out with an extra cart full that we didn’t need” and he had to “watch me”. I’d have been mad but he’s right lol.

I did manage to sneak in the new Multigrain Peanut butter Cheerios and the new Ben & Jerry’s greek frozen yogurt in Peanut butter banana :). Have you tried them yet? I”m excited. Totally thought of PBFingers when I was buying them!

Haven’t tried it yet, but I’ll let you know when I do… I’ll be so sad if something that combines peanut butter, bananas, and frozen yogurt turns out to be bad 🙁

My boyfriend tried the chocolate raspberry chunk greek frozen yogurt and said that it wasn’t bad, but he was hoping it was going to be a little more tart.

The peanut butter cheerios were definitely worth it though!

I tried it and it’s not bad, but it is literally just banana fro-yo with a bit of a peanut butter swirl. Since those things taste good it’s not bad, but I could just make banana soft serve and make my own peanut butter swirl and save myself the $$ and the extra ingredients.
