Add the Fat

February 21, 2011 by Julie 51 Comments

Okay, so I didn’t exactly drizzle Crisco all over my morning yogurt bowl, but I did add some healthy fat to the mix in the form of chia seeds and ground flax seed!

Flax + Chia + Yogurt + Blubes

In the mix:

  • 1 c. Chobani plain Greek yogurt
  • Fresh blueberries
  • Chia seeds
  • Ground flax seeds

Come in Close for da Good Stuff

People seem to praise protein as the miracle element to any meal to help you feel fuller for longer. While I totally agree with this, I also need fat and fiber! If I just eat a hunk of meat, I am left wanting more. Add in some fat (nuts, seeds, cheese!) and fiber (veggies, fruit, whole grains!) and I’m a happy girl.

Eat Up!

Don’t fear the fat!

What a great breakfast to enjoy after a sweaty workout.

Workout

This morning I headed to the gym ready to exercise! I guess two days off from the gym coupled with some seriously indulgent eating over the weekend served as a good motivator. Note to self: If I’m ever suffering from gym burn out, I should take some time off. It will reinvigorate me!

My morning workout included a BodyPump class followed by 20 minutes on the elliptical. It felt so good to get my blood flowin’!

Fast forward through a nice 2.5 mile walk with Sadie and a delicious breakfast and it’s time to work. I am so wishing I was still on vacation…

I think that fat = satiety physically but for me, I gotta have carbs to feel happy! So a balance of carbs, fats & proteins is obviously the ideal one.

I actually just read an article this morning at the gym about the popularity of “meatless mondays”. I have considered joining in, but I don’t know what my husband will think when no meat shows up on his plate. I must be creative 🙂

I agree on the fat factor! I like adding chia seeds, flax seeds, and hemp seeds to my smoothies – even though I don’t really notice them, I definitely feel full for longer when they’re there!

Word on the streets is you should have as many grams of protein as your target weight. This seemed like a lot to me. I was just curious your thoughts. And for the fats…it’s always fun to be eating fat and it be called healthy. Love me some almonds 🙂

i’ve read that too, but personally feel that it’s not necessary. here’s the mayo clinic’s take: http://www.webmd.com/food-recipes/protein

while i find their recommendation a little low and personally like to eat more protein than that b/c it makes me feel more satisfied, i don’t think i need as much protein as my body weight.

Totally agree with you on the overemphasis of protein- people think they need so much than they really do, and they often cut out healthy fats and complex carbs as a result! Love me some chias- I need to start adding them to more stuff.

thanks for sharing about your intake of fat & fiber! Lots of people believe that eating fat makes you fat….which, as you know, is not true at all! Healthy fats in moderation is where it’s at!!!

I also had blueberries and chia seeds this morning….in my oatmeal along with a banana, honey, and cinnamon!

I’m a huge fan of fat. In fact, I tend to fall in the camp that thinks that even dietary (saturated) fat isn’t as bad as we’ve been told! Lots of studies seem to be coming out with those findings too.

With that being said, I’m definitely a nut and nut butter-aholic. I literally go through about a jar a week! No shame, though 😉

I’ve read that healthy fats actually help your body digest carbs and protein, so it makes everything run more efficiently. Totally makes sense! I always go with some olive oil, nut butter, or avocado . . . I also do full fat cheese, but I try to keep my serving in check. Healthy fats make me feel good! I’m the same way with veggies . . . I start to feel icky if I don’t get enough.

I’m always saying how fat is extremely important. Without it, I go crazy. Literally. If I’m not getting enough fat in my diet, I get depressed and anxious so I always tend to opt for full-fat dairy products, lots of nuts and fattier cuts of meat. It also does wonders for my skin and hair!

I’m with you on adding healthy fat. I’ve noticed a difference between 0% and 2% yogurt – and the latter keeps me fuller longer when paired with a source of fiber (oats, granola, etc.).

Fat also = FLAVOR! One of my favorite things about your blog is that we seem to have very similar food preferences. I noticed in your grocery shopping post that you didn’t purchase any light cheese, but you bought fat free cottage cheese. How do you decide which dairy products could be light, fat free and which just gotta be FULL ooey gooey fat-tastic! ?

Sometimes I wanna taste the light cheeses just to see how close they get to the full versions, but I’m afraid of being disappointed and left pining for non-lite.

I JUST started my own healthy living blog and im always thinking of ways to find more balance in developing a healthy lifestyle. Yogurt bowls have been a daily meal for me lately and I love the combo you used! My usual consists of frozen berries plain greek, nut butter, peanut flour, ground flax, and puffed wheat or Millet to add in!

Research states that most Americans get far more protein than needed anyway. I enjoy full fat peanut butter on a daily basis. I just can’t get enough, but I always keep in mind that there is always tomorrow to enjoy some more rather than eating the whole jar.
