Currently (May 2021)

May 12, 2021 by Julie 37 Comments

Hi friends!! How are you doing this morning? I hope your week is going well so far! I’m popping in today with a throwback 2013 fav  — a “Currently” themed blog post! It’s a blog post I enjoy sporadically sharing on PBF to highlight some things I’m currently enjoying, reading, wearing, doing, etc. If you feel like playing along, I’d love to read about some of your current interests, awesome finds, reads, eats and more in the comments section of this post!

Let’s dive right in!

Currently (May 2021)

Currently Reading: The Huntress by Kate Quinn

Kate Quinn has officially claimed a spot as one of my favorite authors. I devoured The Alice Network and The Rose Code and am currently reading The Huntress and loving it. I’m sure I’ll go into more detail about this book in an upcoming Friday post but let’s just say if you’re a fan of well-researched historical fiction, it’s absolutely worth a read.

Currently Anticipating: My Hair Appointment! And an Eyebrow Appointment! And a Pedicure!

I haven’t had my hair done in 1.5 years and I am readyyy. I have an appointment for the first week of June and I am counting down the days! My hair needs some serious help and I cannot wait. @ChristieBrennBeauty, I’m coming for YOU!

I also have a much-needed eyebrow appointment on the books for next week and my Mother’s Day pedicure scheduled and after seriously neglecting some of these beauty indulgences over the past year and a half, it feels incredibly nice to be able to look forward to them again.

Currently Pondering: Summer Plans

Last summer we loved every second of the two weeks we spent at my parents’ place in Florida over the Fourth of July and we are planning to return again for another two weeks this summer, too! We’re planning our visit over the Fourth of July and again and also hope to be there to celebrate my sister’s birthday with her at the end of June. I know this trip will be a highlight of our summer and I already cannot wait! Beach + Pool + Repeat = The BEST! Factor in lots of family time and I’m in heaven!

Annnd speaking of summer… I am also trying to figure out summer camp schedules for Chase and Ryder. I’d ideally like them in camps on the same days/same times so I can free up some work time for myself which is tricky given their three year age gap. (A lot more camps are open for Chase’s age in our area than for Ryder.) I only have two weeks booked for the boys for the entire summer so far. I’m sweatin’ it a little bit because I need the work time but another part of me just wants to lean into a more laidback summer and not worry about scheduling much. If something fun pops up, we’ll jump on it but for now, I’m trying to go with the flow. That’s what summer is all about, right!?

Currently Watching: Nothing (… And Looking for Suggestions)

It’s been months since we’ve had a good show to watch and, if I’m being honest, I’m still a little sad we’re done with Schitt’s Creek. I haven’t found a show I’ve liked that much in YEARS so it’s definitely a tough act to follow. I’ve heard great things about Ted Lasso from my friends Merri and Leah so that show is on our radar. Also, a documentary that intrigues me is My Octopus Teacher and I’m wondering if that one might be a good one to watch as a family during Family Moving Night since our boys are animal-obsessed. If you’ve seen it, is it interesting/appropriate for kids? Any other must-watch shows out there?

Currently Relishing: One Morning When Every Kid Slept In Past 7 a.m.

Yes, it really happened! On Tuesday! This has not happened since Rhett joined our family and likely won’t happen again anytime soon but it was so wonderful.

Currently Ordering: Isle of Paradise Self Tanning Drops

Consider me influenced. After seeing so many people share these tanning drops on Instagram, I bit the bullet and ordered them from Sephora. They seem super low maintenance (you add a few drops to your favorite moisturizer) and received Sephora’s “clean beauty” designation so I figured they were worth a try. My drops arrived yesterday and I haven’t tried them yet but my fingers are crossed that they will live up to the hype.

Currently Feeling Emotional About: Chase’s Preschool Graduation

Oh my gosh. It’s really happening! Chase is graduating from preschool at the end of the month and the general sentiment from me and the other moms in his class is that we’re all just a bundle of emotions. Chase has been at the same preschool for four years and I could not love it any more. I am so appreciative of his amazing teachers who pour so much time, effort and love into our kids every year. During his time at his preschool, he has made some amazing friends and I’ve grown to love so many of the families we’ve met through his school. Most of our kids have been together since the 2s class and knowing that most of them will be separated and heading off to different schools in the area has me feeling extra emotional. They’ve been such a wonderful group of friends for four years and I will miss hearing all about this special gang. Thankfully Chase seems incredibly excited about kindergarten which is a huge blessing so while I think I’ll be crying my eyes out at his graduation, I think he’ll be juuuust fine.

Currently Making: Lots of Pancakes

We are on a big-time pancake kick in our house for one glaring reason: Rhett LOVES them! When I make pancakes for the boys, I try to make them more nutrient-dense and we have a few recipes on rotation lately! My banana bread protein pancakes are always a hit with our crew (Rhett even eats them cold right out of the fridge) and these almond flour pancakes from Love and Lemons are so simple that I’ve found myself making them over and over again.

Currently Sweating: 3-4 times A Week in Our Driveway

If 1.5 years ago you would’ve told me I’d find myself working out at home often times in the early afternoon, I would’ve thought you were crazy. I distinctly remember myself saying that if a workout doesn’t happen before noon around here, it doesn’t happen and, well, let’s just say I’m eating my words at the moment. Planning my workouts around three kids’ schedules and trying to maximize nighttime/early morning sleep has me often working out during one of Rhett’s naps which means that more often than not my workouts happen at 10 a.m. or 2 p.m. To be honest, I really enjoy my outdoor workouts when things run smoothly which, um, isn’t always the case if I don’t plan things well and too many kids are awake and needing me. My return to Burn Boot Camp is still very much on my radar but I’m making things work the best I can right now and feel grateful for a decent home workout setup.

I’m mostly doing Burn Boot Camp workouts online (they stream them for members working out at home) and also love YouTube workouts from Nourish Move Love.

Currently Craving: ALLLL the Homemade Ice Cream

Making a batch of homemade strawberry ice cream two weeks ago unearthed my love for homemade ice cream. If you follow me on Instagram, get ready for waaay too many pics of various ice cream recipes in my Stories! Also, if you have an ice cream recipe you think is a “must make” please let me know!

I wouldn’t recommend My Octopus Teacher for children. It’s interesting but has a sad ending.
Love those tanning drops! Just make sure you wash your hands afterward.

Currently obsessed with Jane the Virgin on Netflix. It’s a sitcom/telenovela and it’s entertaining and cute and just perfect to pop in and out of for this busy mama.

It’s actually a show from Spain, but Netflix bought it and dubbed over in English. The characters are SO good. You will love it…my favorite show of 2020 for sure.

            Remembered 2 more:

Jack Ryan, which I think you mentioned you watched, but not sure?

            The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel

Check out Atlantic Crossing (on Amazon Prime/Masterpiece Theatre). Historical drama about WW2, FDR, and the crown princess of Norway. I barely watch tv, and this has me hooked. Have you tried any frozen yogurt recipes? I bought the ice cream maker you have on sale last week and have already made two batches of ice cream!

Currently Reading: Empire of Pain: The Secret History of the Sackler Dynasty by Patrick Radden Keefe (Non-fiction is real hit or miss for me, but this is verrrryyy interesting–its about the family that created and marketed the medication OxyContin and how it/they contributed to the opioid epidemic)

Currently Watching: I have been all about Modern Family! I had watched an episode here or there, but now that they’re all streaming on Peacock, i’m watching from the beginning and find myself laughing out loud!

My husband and I stumbled onto Dead to Me and have been loving it! We love the short 30ish min episodes and it’s a great mix of drama, humor (usually dark humor), and suspense. Also Workin’ Moms is another great series with quick 30min episodes and is hilarious. I think you’d find it especially humorous given where you are in life and sometimes after a long day of mommin’ I can’t handle a long serious show. Workin’ Moms is great for something more light-hearted and is bound to make you laugh.

We loved Ted Lasso and I watched My Octopus Teacher solo but absolutely adored it! There is a new David Attenborough documentary on Netflix called Life in Color which might appeal to your boys. For more adult viewing, we’ve been watching the latest Handmaid’s Tale season. The Mindy Project is also SOOO good! It’s not new but I frequently go back to it when I need a good laugh.

Cobra Kai on Netflix – just finished and it was so, so good! Lots of flashback scenes to the original Karate Kid movies, so you don’t need lots of Karate Kid knowledge to understand what’s going on.

And on the complete opposite end of the spectrum – Younger on Hulu (originally on TV Land) is a Sex and the City for a new generation. Super cute and funny.

Quick tip…check out commonsensemedia.org. They have in depth reviews of movies/books/shows and give details that can help you decide what’s appropriate for your kids. I use it all the time.

My boys are 7 and 4.5 and are animal/nature obsessed. We recently watched the new whale documentary series on Disney+ and it was amazing. There were a few parts where the whales were hunting that didn’t sit well with my sensitive oldest but besides that it was fabulous.
