Death in a Cup

March 18, 2011 by Julie 48 Comments

Today is Friday and that means one thing for my workout routine: Boot camp! My latest obsession! I love all of the plyometric moves, the intense bursts of energy followed by quick rest periods and the way the whole class feels like it lasts only 10 minutes.

Today’s class was more cardio-based and had me sweatin’ in no time. The most difficult move for me was the one that had us going from sitting on a step bench to standing with an overhead press as many times as possible. It was surprisingly tough!

We also did a move called the “duck walk” where we basically waddled with our butts almost touching our feet. It was awkward and hard!

Ducks! Open-mouthed smile

After boot camp, I did 15 minutes of light cardio on the elliptical before heading home and taking Sadie on a walk around the lake with Ryan. We chatted about our weekend plans and I’m excited for two days off of work. It’s been a busy week!

Breakfast

When we arrived home, I quickly showered before heading into the kitchen to make a protein-packed smoothie.

It looks like death in a cup, but it tastes good!

In the mix:

  • 1 large frozen banana
  • 1 c. almond milk
  • 1 scoop chocolate protein powder
  • 1 tbsp. cocoa powder
  • 2 pinches xanthan gum (for thickening)
  • 1 large handful fresh spinach

It was fantastically chocolaty.

For some reason I feel a tiny bit victorious whenever I manage to sneak veggie into my breakfasts. Sneaky spinach. BAM!

Time to do that work thang…

The best smoothies always look the grossest. I swear, the pretty pink ones are generally nowhere near as tasty as the pukey green ones!!

People often assume I am drinking a chocolate shake because of the way my smoothies look. Then they give me the weirdest looks (or make puking noises – lovely) when I tell them it’s because of the spinach I added. I love disappointing them 🙂

Isn’t it weird — 9 times out of 10 the meal/drink that LOOKS the worst TASTES the best?? Why is that?

Ugh, the duck walk SUCKS! We used to have to do that for basketball. That and suicides…my two least favorite exercises!
