Doorbell in the Middle of the Night

August 9, 2012 by Julie 74 Comments

I’ve had a theory linking the random ringing of our doorbell to the power going out for a while now.

Since I work from home, I’ve been sitting at my computer when the power has shut off a couple of times. A few months ago, the moment my computer randomly turned off, the doorbell rang and yet no one was at the door. Odd.

I immediately began to wonder whether or not there was a correlation. I told Ryan my theory and he shrugged his shoulders saying it was a possibility, but certainly strange.

Well, last night, in the middle of the night, our doorbell rang. Creepy.

doorbell 018

Sadie spiraled into a fit of crazy and ran around the house barking. Ryan and I sat up, looking at each other, admittedly a little on edge. A visit from a random looney, perhaps?

Then I saw the digital clock in our room blinking. The power went out!

I proudly proclaimed, “The doorbell rings whenever the power goes out!”

Theory proven.

Even with our minds at ease, it was a little hard to fall back to sleep after the commotion, though nothing will top the evening when Ryan had me convinced someone was in our house. Yikes. I was on edge at nighttime for a solid week after that one.

Breakfast

I think the incident from last night took a lot out of Sadie.

doorbell 013-001

She’s a sleepy little thing this morning. I have a feeling I’ll get about 20 minutes of sleepy Sadie before psycho Sadie returns in full force.

Sadie wasn’t even curious about what was going on in the kitchen this morning as I made breakfast.

pancakes with syrup

Pancakes!

pancakes

I made a batch of banana vanilla protein pancakes and topped them with a bit of syrup to start the day. Nice and comforting.

Hopefully today will be less intense than last night!

    Woah, crazy!

Our front door was once wide open…although we were sure to have locked it. My sister and I ran up the stairs, locked my room, called our parents who were in the room next to us and together we roamed the whole house (4 floors) with pans and pots and a bat…
We didn’t find anybody but it was terrifying for sure!

Oh my goodness, such a coincidence that you wrote about this today because I was just telling my roommate that on the weekend, I woke up in the night because of a dream I was having. The dream wasn’t really anything special, but when I actually was awake, I looked towards my bedroom door. I have hooks on the back of it and there was a purse and 2 of my hoodies hanging on the hooks. My eyes and the light from the window were playing tricks on me, because when I looked towards the door, it looked like someone was standing there watching me. I got so freaked out and burst into tears, but then I realized there was nothing there and felt like such a tool! I have a ‘usual routine’ if things like that happen though… I’ve got a playlist on my iPhone and there are 3 or 4 slow John Mayer songs near the end of it. I just put that on and within about 2 minutes I’m back to blissful sleep again!

Creepy and bizarre about the doorbell! Thank goodness nobody was there.
Last year when my husband was out of town our alarm went off in the middle of the night. I almost had a heart attack and was even more shaky when the alarm company called and told me to go downstairs to check it out!

That is so scary!!!! I would have been freaked out and I probably wouldn’t have been able to go back to sleep.

A couple of months ago, I stopped at my house to drop something off with my sister. My fiance and I live together. I walked up to the door and noticed that it was half open. He wasn’t home. I started freaking out and walked around the entire house expecting to find someone lurking. I couldn’t get ahold of my fiance because he was at the gym. I had him paged there and he later told me that he went to get the mail before going to the gym and left the door half open but the mail wasn’t there and he completely forgot to go back and close the door. I seriously thought someone broke in! I have never felt so scared before!

When I was younger, something freaky actually did happen but my parents thought it was nothing.. They can thank me for being a light sleeper!
I heard the front doorknob jiggling at about 5am and was immediately alerted. I slowly creeped downstairs to check it out, and there was a man standing at the door!! I screamed to my parents that someone was trying to break in, and my mom said ‘it’s just the cats, go back to bed’. It wasn’t until I assured them that there was a man standing there trying to get the door open that they called 911.
The police took forever to get to the house, but by that point we realized he was high and pretty harmless– wasn’t trying to pick the lock, just jiggling the door knob. The police immediately recognized him as a local druggie and took him home to sleep it off!
It was terrifying initially, but I’m so glad nothing worse happened!

I had to laugh at this because I’ve been in your shoes quite a few times. I think the funniest story is when I nearly had a panic attack after I heard what sounded like scratching and someone trying to break in, only to realize it was my ice maker. Ha! Thank God I was home alone, otherwise I would never be able to live that one down.

Once I lived with these girls who kept our front door unlocked all the time. While I was all alone in the house, about a week before I was supposed to move, our doorbell rang about fifteen times in succession. I ran to it, and before I got there, this guy barges in and goes “Are those girls here?!” I said no and he left. I promptly locked the door. So glad I didn’t live there much longer.

Um, that would definitely freak me out! Actually just two nights ago, I SWORE I heard someone down in the basement. It was like 2am, and I didn’t want to wake up my husband right away if it was just nothing. I tossed and turned for quite awhile, when I finally decided to wake him up. He went down there and it was just the water softener! Haha. I felt like such an idiot.

Hopped on the arc trainer and then all of a sudden the treadmill next to me started running. I WAS FREAKING OUT. Literally mid stride grabbed all my stuff and ran straight to my apartment and got back in bed. Scariest morning of my life. lol.

A few days after I moved into my new apartment, living by myself, I woke up to a huge crash and loud yelling. I, of course, freaked out and grabbed a random hammer (what would I have even done with it?). I dialed 911 immediately and told them that I had no idea what was happening but it was loud and I was terrified and OMG AM I GOING TO DIE?! Turns out, there was a car accident right in front of my house. I think I got to the police before the people in the cars did!

The other morning, right after we moved into our new apartment, I was taking a catnap on the couch around 6 AM. I woke up to the sound of our door opening (which I had forgotten to lock). I sat straight up, and I was really confused about whether what I had heard was part of the dream or reality. I went back to sleep for a few more minutes and then finished getting ready for the day. As I left, I found a newspaper inside our front door! Our door is too low to the ground for the paper to be slid under the door, and we don’t have a paper delivery! Anyway, I was pretty freaked, and I never forget to lock the door now!

I was SO scared and was thinking of even calling the police but the more the screaming went on, it sounded like an animal. I looked it up and it was a female fox mating call but it sounds like someone is DYING. It was so freaky but at least now I know what it is lol!

But we lived downtown in a city of a few hundred thousand…… One night a drunk lady in a night gown started yelling, cursing, and banging on our front door; and my roommate let her in!! Like, opened the door and invited her in! I couldn’t believe it! She was drunk out of her mind, so I called the cops. They came very quickly, thank goodness, because she did start to get a bit violent. I still can’t believe she did that!! Lol!

My bedroom is directly under a pecan tree, and when the pecans drop and roll across the roof it sounds like a person running across my house. Not a squirrel or some reasonable animal, but a full sized person. Completely freaked me out the first night I heard it (they never seem to drop during the day!).

I work in a lab full time, and whenever the building loses power, even for a couple seconds, all the temperature-sensitive machines have an alarm goes off. The power doesn’t go off too often in the building since it has all sorts of generators, but I got to work one morning and about 6 different machines were going off! So maybe your doorbell has a some sort of weird system set up that it rings when it gets an electrical spasm or something.

Last week my husband and his best friend went out and I took advantage of the time to myself to take a quick nap. When I woke up, I realized that I had a series of texts on my phone from a number with an area code about 2 hours from me.

The first was a random picture. The second was “hey sexy, you get that pic my kids”. The third was “you not talkn to me now?”. Whoa, man. I immediately checked to make sure the curtains and blinds were all closed so the text creeper couldn’t be spying on my, then I went to check the back door to make sure it was locked because I just knew that this would HAVE TO be the first time my husband decided to not lock the door when leaving me home alone.

Thankfully he did lock the door (so caring of him), but then I heard noises outside. Turns out it was my husband and his friend pulling into the driveway immediately after the “incident” and caught me all disheveled from jumping out of my sleep in a panic after reading the texts lol

Random question, Julie. Does Sadie sleep in the bed with you and do you let her on your furniture? My boyfriend and I aren’t allowed to have a dog at our current apartment but we know we want to get one when we have our own place. He told me that the only deal was that it wouldn’t be allowed on furniture, which I am okay with because my parents have a lab, which is the breed we want, and it sheds all over the furniture.

O goodness…I have had so many scary instances like that! The scariest one was about a year ago when I was a senior in college and lived with roommates who never locked the door, and our front door was pretty old. You had to slam on it to even get it to properly shut. There had been a recent string of robberies and men breaking into women’s apartments, so I made sure to lock my bedroom door at night since I knew that my roommates would most likely forget to lock the door. Well, I woke up one night because it was freezing in the apartment and in my sleepy daze I opened up my bedroom door and looked down the stairs and saw that the front door was wide open! I completely panicked and sprinted down the stairs and slammed the door shut and locked it. I checked the entire apartment and no one was in there. The wind probably just blew it open, but I almost had a heart attack I was so scared. The next morning I told my roommates what had happened, and after that they never left the door unlocked again!

Once, I was with a guy I dated in college, at a hotel near the Hamptons. In the middle of the night, he started kicking me (I’m 5’2″, he was 6’1″), and saying, “they’re coming, they’re coming through the door, they’re going to get us.” Every time I wased, what or who, he answered like he was fully concious. Needless to say just a minute of that, I was freaked out, and even though I eventually realized he was sleep talking, I was so mad at him for scaring the crap out of me! I did fall back to sleep after a while, but woke up still angry until I told him what happened. He was so apologetic, but I was still not a happy camper. At leats my current boyfriend just sleeps with his eyes open occasionally– no threats of an attack! 🙂
