Five Favorite Food Finds

June 1, 2017 by Julie 499 Comments

Today’s blog post features five of my favorite food finds at ALDI, including a mix of organic staples and indulgent treats! Thank you so much to ALDI for sponsoring this post. To find an ALDI near you, check out their store locator here.

5 Favorite Food Finds from ALDI

By now you guys know that I fell hard and fast for ALDI. After a conversation about reducing our monthly food expenditures prompted my friend Jess to encourage me and my girlfriends to check out the newly renovated ALDI in our area, I popped into the store after church one Sunday and have found myself returning frequently thanks to the affordable organic produce and quality pantry staples we use consistently in our house.

I know that in the past, at least in our area, ALDI wasn’t really known for their healthy and organic options but I am continually impressed with the prices we’ve found on everything from organic grassfed beef to organic fruits and vegetables, grains, spices, nuts and nut butters.

ALDI Grocery Haul

For today’s blog post, I wanted to roundup a list of five favorite food finds that you can only get at ALDI! I think you’ll notice a trend toward the SimplyNature brand of products ALDI carries. I definitely gravitate toward that brand because they’re free of any artificial flavors, colors and preservatives and are pretty darn tasty, too!

Five Favorite Food Finds from ALDI

  • SimplyNature Organic Coconut Oil

Simply Nature Organic Coconut Oil

We go through coconut oil at an alarmingly rapid rate in our house so you better believe I cannot get enough of the SimplyNature Organic Coconut Oil at ALDI. I use coconut oil for everything from making my own protein fudge to roasting vegetables and moisturizing my skin (it’s great for dry knuckles!) and recently fell in love with using coconut oil in my coffee. If you haven’t tried blending coconut oil into your coffee in the morning, you must! It makes the coffee so smooth and creamy and leaves a delicious layer of foam on the top! The flavor of the SimplyNature Organic Coconut Oil is very delicate which makes it ideal for use in so many recipes since the coconut flavor is not overpowering in the least.

  • SimplyNature Organic Spices

SimplyNature Organic Spices

I’m going to go ahead and lump a whole bunch of spices into one bullet point favorite for the sake of brevity because I LOVE the SimplyNature Organic Spices so darn much! I have a bit of a love-hate relationship with cooking and baking complicated meals that call for tons of spices because spices can be so expensive. Thankfully the SimplyNature Organic Spices are affordable and flavorful and don’t make my wallet want to cry when I want to try a new one! I go through certain spices like cinnamon and cumin rather quickly, so it’s nice not to feel like I have to shell out the big bucks to replace these specific spices when I need them.

  • SimplyNature Vegetable Chips

ALDI Vegetable Chips

The entire Fagan family flips for these chips! I love the simple ingredient list and the crispy, crunchy blend of sweet potato, parsnip, taro and batata root veggies. They’ve also been a big hit with friends (I packed two bags to bring to Savannah on my girlfriend getaway last month), and know they’ll be a cookout staple for us this summer!

  • SimplyNature Fruit & Nut Bars

SimplyNature Fruit and Nut Bars

I initially grabbed one of these bars when Ryan, Chase and I were waiting in the checkout line during our first visit to our new local ALDI because I was starving and wanted something to snack on in the car. I think I must’ve moaned out loud when I took a bite (clearly I was VERY hungry!) because Ryan laughed out loud and said something along the lines of, “So you hate it, huh?” Now whenever we pop into ALDI, I cannot resist grabbing a few of these bars to have on hand when the hunger beast strikes. The Dark Chocolate Mocha Almond is my favorite!

  • Specially Selected English Toffee

ALDI Toffee

My sweet tooth made me throw this small container of English Toffee into my cart during a trip to ALDI and they are just the perfect little pick-me-up treat! I find myself reaching for them most often after lunch or around 3 p.m. when I find myself looking for a little taste of something sweet. There’s something about the buttery toffee and the crunch of the  crushed almonds that makes the sweet creaminess of the chocolate coating taste even better!

I really like Veggie Straws but they just feel so bad even though they should feel healthier than typical potato chips. I’m going to have to give the Veggie Chips here a try!

The frozen chicken stir fry meals are great – we use it as a base and add more veggies and greens to it for a quick dinner. Without the extra veggies the sauce packet is large, but when a bit more is added, it’s perfect!

We do 95% of our grocery shopping at Aldi and love it! I like that the store is smaller, and I get the same things week to week, so I can be in and out in less than 30 minutes. I have celiac disease and love their Gfree line of products. It is so nice to have the baking mixes at a reasonable price when GF products are usually so expensive. Our store hasn’t had it in stock for a while, but the GF cornbread mix is amazing!!

Their peanut butter cups and their cookies! The cookies that are like Girl Scout cookies are BETTER and way more affordable!! They also have great coffee! My dad swears by the pork and beans and chili. Not the healthiest options but it’s such a great store!!!

I’m also crazy about their coconut oil. I use it for oil pulling to help whiten, protect, and clean my teeth. Also, my dad, a diabetic, has started eating Elevation low carb snack bars from Aldi instead of mini hand pies (he’s got quite the sweet tooth), and not only is he losing weight, but his sugars are down, which is amazing. He says they taste pretty good, too.
Truthfully, my favorite part of Aldi is the center aisle where they have stuff for your house, and it changes weekly. I LOVE garden time at Aldi. 🙂

I live in Southern Connecticut and there are no ALDIs nearby 🙁 Come to Fairfield County!!

We mostly shop at Trader Joe’s and absolutely love it, but ALDI sounds like a great in-between store for some of the items TJs doesn’t carry. Maybe someday.

I went the other day and only spent $100 for staples. I would have spent probably $150 at my beloved Publix. I liked their seltzer, Simply Nature cheese slices, and the Simply Nature Kids Potato & Kale Bites. I didn’t even think about looking at spices. I’ll check them out next time. And the candy. I had to speed past it because it reminded me of Trader Joe’s little candy containers. Danger, danger!

I’ve always been a big fan of the fresh produce at Aldi! The prices are great, the foods are so fresh and they taste great. Some of my favorite produce picks are: bagged spinach, red/yellow/orange peppers, apples, and seasonal fruits like peaches/nectarines.

My 2 year old loves the Happy Harvest 3 Bean Salad. Beans soaked in vinegar and sugar; at least he eats his veggies! It’s only a Summer item, so I’m happy to see it back on the shelves! The Little Journey wipes are great too, very similar to Huggies brand. The pouches were a huge staple in our house for a while too! We like the “Never Any” meats and their cheeses are really good too. I could keep going, we really do love our Aldi!

I do have a question about the Coconut Oil. We use another brand, but the cost is double. Does the Simply Nature brand have a strong coconut flavor? My husband only likes it if doesn’t taste like coconut…

I have purchased their wild caught salmon burgers (SO SO good!) and their grass-fed organic beef which we ALL love in our house! Both definitely compare to other grocers and are way cheaper. The beef was only $5.50 a pound which is crazy cheap for organic grass-fed beef in our area. I now go there anytime I want beef for burgers!

I love the individual trail mix packs at Aldi. They are so much more affordable than other stores, and you get built-in portion control. They are approx. 220 cals/serving. Also, their garlic hummus is my absolute favorite hummus.

I love Aldi! I like the trail mixes, coffee, sparkling water (limited flavors though, boo), cheese selection, and the random special buys. I found a couple boxed risotto dishes that were great on a night that needed a quick fix. Also the veggie burgers. I once found some bonus veggie burger flavors that I loved, but I think the typical customer of my store doesn’t go for veggie burgers much so I haven’t seen them again. Oh, I also love the kale salad mix! And the guacamole packs. And the local salsa. Clearly my favorite store.

I shop almost exclusively at Aldi and save so much money. I recommend their pesto sauce (put a jar in the crockpot with chicken thighs…yum!), sustainable wild caught canned tuna, their blocks of cheese, whole milk plain greek yogurt (hard to find elsewhere), and the basics like toilet paper, paper towels, and ziplock bags.

It usually takes 3-4 hours on high. If I’m going to be out and about and may be cutting it close, I fill the pesto jar with water or stock, give it a shake, and dump that in so it doesn’t dry out. Sometimes I add garlic and onion powder. Sometimes I’ve only added the chicken and pesto and rushed out the door. It’s hard to mess up!
