Hey guys!! This morning I wanted to pop in and say hello, but it’s going to be a bit of a fly by post because things are a little hectic over here at the moment. I just got back from teaching a morning spin class and have just enough time to make myself a quick breakfast, say hi to you guys and fly back out the door for my next shift at the gym.
So what was on the menu for today?
An egg white and oatmeal protein pancake, of course! Now that these pancakes are back in my regular breakfast rotation, I cannot seem to stop eating them. I’ve been adding a scoop of peanut butter to the mix before preparing the pancake in a skillet and love the added staying power and flavor. Peanut butter everything, baby!
Spinning
Before breakfast, I taught an early morning spin class and I’m actually now officially allowed to say I “teach Spinning” since I went through Spinning instructor training on Saturday.
Since Spinning is a registered trademark, unless an instructor obtains a certification through Spinning, they cannot say they “teach Spinning,” which is why, up until now, I’ve always referred to my classes as “indoor cycle” or “cycle.” Interesting, huh? I remember first learning about the distinction when I began teaching at a gym in Florida and am excited to have an official Spinning certification under my belt.
I’ll be sure to share more about the certification later this week. If you have any specific questions about it, please let me know! I’ll be sure to address them in a comprehensive post about the training.
Time to head back out. Hope you guys had a wonderful weekend! See ya after lunch!

I can’t wait to read about your experience with the Spinning cert. I always love hearing what other instructors are up to and their thoughts on various certs. 🙂
Erin @ Her Heartland Soul says
Have an awesome Monday! I love spinning!
Leah (goodnight cheese) says
Who owns spinning? Is it similar to how somebody “owns” Zumba? I’d like to hear about the training & cost associated with it, like if the gym has to pay the spinning owner.
Julie says
awesome questions! i’ll definitely address them in the post!
Autumn says
I would really like to try a spinning class sometime soon. Although I must say I am a little nervous!!
Bethany Imondi says
Congrats on the spinning certification! I need to get re-certified and I’ve been wondering if I should renew with Spinning/ Mad Dogg Athletics or get a new certification.
stacy says
Bethany, I have maddog and scwhinn. those are the TOP 2 to get!
Lauren @ The Bikini Experiment says
Your breaakfast looks delicious! I would like to learn most of what I am sure you are going to cover. Mainly a breakdown of how the certification works and if there is a test, etc. to get your cert. Have a great Monday!
Stacie@SimplySouthernStacie says
I always have to say that I’m certified in cycling because I am not certified in the trademarked “spinning” classes. Congrats!
Ashley @ Saving Money in your Twenties says
oooooh I never knew that spinning vs. cycle distinction… interesting!
Shel@PeachyPalate says
Spinning…best class ever! You should incorporate tabata’s if you don’t already…they were originally designed for the bike!
Julie says
i do! love them!! i actually mentioned them in this post along w/ some music resources for tabata workouts that i am LOVING lately! thought it might interest you if you are a tabata fan: https://www.pbfingers.com/2015/01/06/tabata-workout-music/
Tamara @ A Side Of Dessert says

Katie @ Katie Moves says
I can’t wait to hear about the spinning cert! I know at my gym we call it cycling cause we don’t do specific spin classes.
Katie @ Peace Love & Oats says
Oh I didn’t realize Spinning was a specific class as opposed to just generally cycling! Haha the things you learn!
Lizzie S. says
Girl that pancake is making my mouth water!
Natalie @ Never Serious Blog says
Well congrats on that new certification! I’ve always wondered what the difference in “spin” and “cycle” was, now I know it’s just a little trademark difference! I’ve done Les Mills RPM classes in the past too!
Kim says
Yum – that breakfast looks good! Congrats on your spinning title! Would love to know if there’s training or certs you have to have before that?

How have I not tried your famed protein pancake yet?! Shame on me!!! I WILL! This week, I’m getting up early.. I mean it 😉
Ashley @ A Lady Goes West says
It’s funny you mention that, because I was going to ask what type of cycling certification you had! Cool! Hope you have a great day! 🙂
Kristin @ My Year in the Making says
That looks DELISH. Congrats on becoming certified 🙂
Fiona @ Get Fit Fiona says
I’m looking forward to hearing about your spin training. I know you now have a few of them, which ones have you found the most useful or asked for at gyms?
Julie says
to me, it seems like gyms are most impressed with my NASM certified personal trainer certification, but they definitely like the AFAA group ex cert, too!!
Kim says
Here’s a random cooking question about the protein pancake – do you think if you switched it up and added, say, pumpkin puree, that it would take longer to cook, or alternatively, NEVER cook through because of the extra moisture? have you tried any of this?
Just wondering, as I cook, but I certainly don’t cook every day (I’m more of an “assembler” of food). So thought you might tell us from your experience.
Never knew there was a special trademark for Spinning! Thanks!
Erin @ Erin's Inside Job says
It seems like you are always running all over the place! 🙂 I used to not have much time to work on my blog, so I would bring my laptop w me to work and write my posts on my lunch break. Im sure you are aware of your running around and ways to streamline it, but that’s just my experience with it.
Congrats on your certification!!
Julie says
i do try to do that, but i will often come home b/c i want to let sadie out or grab a super fast shower (and i don’t love the locker room showers at my gym)… plus i only live 5 min. from one of the gyms where i work, so that makes coming home a bit easier!
Jennifer says
Good to know! I wondered what the difference is between Spinning Vs. Cycling. #factnerd
Joelle @ on a pink typewriter says
I’m definitely interested in learning more about your spinning certification process! It’s something I’m interested in potentially doing…
Heather @ Housewife Glamour says
Congrats on the certification! I would love to “teach Spinning” one day too. 🙂

Hopefully you can share- where are you teaching spinning!? I’m new to the charlotte area (moved here October from California) and need to find some fun classes!
Rachel @ Blonde with a Chanse says
Can I just say how I think it is so awesome that you continue to get certified to teach several different classes! Now I just wish I lived in your area so that I could take one from you! 🙂
Julie says
thank you, rachel!! <3
Maria@ChampionshipFit says
Just looked up the recipe for egg white and oatmeal protein pancake and it looks so easy! I love simple recipes like that, and I’m betting it’s super tasty. Luckily I have all the ingredients on hand and can try it tomorrow morning, since I’m trapped in a snow storm in Jersey!
Julie says
stay safe!!! and i hope you love the pancake! 🙂
Karina @ fitsickle says
Congrats on getting certified!! I love the Spinning class format and have always been interested in certification (mainly because I am obsessed with music during spin classes). Can you teach Spinning classes at any gym or do they have to have the official Spinning bikes? Our gym has “cycling” classes, so I wasn’t sure if Spinning classes are outlawed there 🙂 Thanks for taking questions! Can’t wait to hear about the certification class!
Michelle says
I cant wait for your post on becoming certified! I’ve been thinking about doing it for quite some time now. I think this is the year I’ll make it happen!
Daisy- Fit Wanderlust Runner says
I love spin classes! I am going in for one this afternoon 🙂
Sarah @ Sarah Sincerely says
That’s so interesting…I would’ve never had a clue there was a difference between “Spinning” and “cycle.” Makes sense, though. Your breakfast looks so yummy. I wish I had the time to make pancakes on weekday mornings.
Amanda B @ Cupcakes & Miles says
That’s awesome! Congrats on the certification!
Michele says
Were you teaching spin/cycle with a different certificate before this or were you not certified until this weekend? I’d really enjoy a post on the different types of certs!
Julie says
i had my general group ex certification and my personal training certification, but not a specialized cycling cert until this weekend. 🙂
Kellie R. says
Do you have a favorite class that you teach? I’ve done bootcamp, but have yet to do spinning!
Julie says
honestly, it’s probably spinning! i love it!!
Bridget McGahen says
Your pancakes look awesome! I definitely need to try them. And weird! I didn’t know that “spinning” was trademarked!
