How Did You Discover Healthy Living Blogs?

August 24, 2011 by Julie 253 Comments

For some reason I’m finding it harder and harder to work out immediately upon awakening at my parents’ house.

Maybe it’s because Ryan is usually my gym buddy and we’re both typically on autopilot when the alarm goes off at 5 a.m. and head straight to the gym as part of our daily routine? (I miss him!)

For the past few days, I’ve been waking up between 6 and 7 a.m., working for a few hours and then taking a one-hour break to exercise around 9 a.m. or 11 a.m. I’m sure I’ll go back to my old “wake up before the sun rises to workout” routine when Ryan and I move into our new house (in NINE days!), but for now, I’m just going to roll with it.

I think my routine shifted a bit because my mom works out in the late morning and I like having her company when I drive to and from the gym. I’m going to soak up all the family time I can while I’m in St. Pete. This morning I think my mom and I are going to Jazzercise at 9:30 a.m.!

Breakfast

Here’s the other thing: I’ve been hungry immediately upon awakening at my parents’ house. Usually my stomach isn’t growling and I head to the gym on an empty stomach since I get really crampy if I eat within an hour of working out (and I’m not about to wake up in the 4 a.m. hour just to eat a snack).

My stomach never really craves food at 5 a.m., but when I wake up around 6:30 a.m. my belly wants food!

It got what it asked for this morning in the form of a yogurt bowl.

I topped a cup of Oikos blueberry Greek yogurt with fresh blueberries, Multigrain Cheerios and chia seeds and ate a peach on the side.

A spoonful of peanut butter rounded out this meal.

How Did You Discover Healthy Living Blogs?

I have been blogging for just shy of two years. One of the craziest things in the world to me is that less than three years ago, I didn’t even know healthy living blogs existed.

Now blogging is my passion. It’s part of my livelihood. It’s something that consumes my life in the best  possible way.

I remember when I stumbled upon my first healthy living blog. I was browsing around Health magazine’s website and read an article written by Tina. At the bottom of the article, there was a link directing readers to Tina’s personal blog, Carrots ‘n’ Cake.

Before checking out Tina’s blog, I thought blogs were like personal journals. I assumed they were maintained by techy people and contained posts that vented about various things that annoyed them. Clearly I was mistaken.

When I clicked the link on the Health Magazine website and saw Tina’s blog, I fell in love with her laid back approach to healthy living. Something about her blog resonated with me. I felt like I read something written by a friend and continued to read daily.

Tina’s blog led me to many other healthy living blogs. Eventually I knew I had to get in on the fun and started PBF. (You may see my totally amateur and embarrassing first post here.)

So now I ask you…

Question of the Morning

  • How did you discover the first healthy living blog you ever read?

Be sure to follow PBFingers on Instagram and Facebook!

I'd love to connect with you! I am always so grateful when you let me know you tried one of my recipes or workouts and tag me in your photos or updates. Thank you so much!!!

I got into healthy living blogs when I worked at my internship. I had a whole list of news sources to reference for story ideas, and one of them was an active sports blog from the Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel. From that, I found Kitchen Adventures, another JSOnline blog (http://www.jsonline.com/blogs/lifestyle/kitchenadventures.html), and on THAT blogroll I found Eat, Live, Run. I know this was a really early find for me, along with Faith, Fitness, Fun. Most of the other blogs I’ve found have been through your blogroll/people in comments sections. I love finding new and interesting blogs to read!

I have to tell you Julie, this morning when I got up at 5.30, my desire to go back to bed was pretty high, but I thought of you and your mantra that you never regret a workout. That convinced me to lace my sneakers on and go for a run. And I didn’t regret it at all!

I remember the first blog that I read was Eat Like Me with Caitlin on Self online. Then, after a few months of reading just her, I found Kath Eats and went from there. I found you because I loved your name and I saw it on someone’s blog roll or something. I love pb. 🙂

I discovered healthy living blogs through PEANUT BUTTER FINGERS! Women’s Health mentioned your blog at the bottom of an online article I was reading. I’ve been here every day since! I like other healthy living blogs, but there’s something different about this one. It’s the ONLY blog I read every day and keep up with. Thank you Julie! :o)

Hi Julie! I know we’ve “talked” on Twitter but I’ve never actually come to check out your blog! Janetha’s recent post led me here.

I first discovered the health blog scene after reading Cristin’s blog, EatLikeMe (for Self). In the comments section, everyone was talking about Kath, so I eventually found KERF, and the rest is history! 🙂

Yours is the first healthy blog I’ve ever read! I read Fitsugar and Yumsugar for fitness tips and recipe ideas, and there was a link to your blog one day. I clicked on it and explored your site a bit, and really liked how it was done, and have been coming back every since!

This is my first visit to PBF thanks to Janetha’s post today! 🙂

I read an article on Shine or something that linked to The Kim Challenge. From there, I think I Googled healthy blogs or something since I was looking to transition from reading wedding blogs all the time after my wedding. I trolled blog rolls looking for stuff that interested me, which has lead to finding Healthy Tipping Point, Daily Garnish, KERF, HEAB, Meals & Moves, and anything else that has struck my fancy.

And the list grows with PBF!

I discovered Tina’s blog a very similar way–through the printed version of Health magazine and then I was hooked. I had a similar viewpoint about blogs too before discovering more like Tina’s.

    Great topic!

Fun to hear your story of getting into the blog world! I discovered healthy living blogs after stumbling across an interview on Tumblr with Theodora from Losing Weight in the City. She mentioned her favorite blogs to read (Carrots ‘n’ Cake, Eat Live Run, Daily Garnish, etc), so I clicked, perused, got addicted and started my own! I love everything about blogging!

I can’t remember exactly how I discovered HL blogs, but I do know Kath’s (KERF) was the first one I read. 🙂

I discovered healthy living blogs through PBF!! Much in the same way that you discovered CnC (which I now read too). I read one of your contributions to Shape and, being a peanut butter addict, just HAD to follow the link at the bottom and find out what this PBF website was all about! I read lots of healthy living blogs now, but PBF is still my fave. I feel like you did about Tina, that I am reading stories from a friend. 🙂

I sort of stumbled upon them all. A girlfriend was raving about Eat Live Run and I started to follow that and then I saw blogs that she liked and went from there. Everyday I am still discovering new blogs (especially after everyone’s HLS recaps with pictures and new links). I keep track of everything through my Google Reader and each day have over 200 new posts! It is getting out of hand!

Educating yourself about bikini waxing is an integral part of
your preparation, as it pays to be aware of what will happen during the procedure.
Avoid friction from tight fitting clothes or human contact immediately after each shave.
use female shaving cream because that works better than male shaving cream.
