How to Curl Your Hair with a Straightener: Video

October 16, 2010 by Julie 97 Comments

Woohoo!

I finally got around to creating the video tutorial I promised you guys months (maybe a year?) ago on how to curl your hair with a straightener!

I never use a curling iron when curling my hair because I prefer the look of looser waves and honestly find that the curls stay for much longer when I use a straightener.

Sooo, without further ado, here is my first totally dorky how-to video!

Okay you can stop laughing at me now…

😀

If any of you guys try this out, let me know how it goes!

It looked really easy when I first watched someone do it, but for some reason it took me quite a few (hundred) tries before really getting the hang of it. You’re likely much more hair savvy than I am, so I’m sure you’ll be a pro in no time!

Happy curling!

Be sure to follow PBFingers on Instagram and Facebook!

I'd love to connect with you! I am always so grateful when you let me know you tried one of my recipes or workouts and tag me in your photos or updates. Thank you so much!!!

I don’t have a curling iron or a straightener. 99% of the time my hair is in a ponytail, because it is easy and that is about the limit of my hair talents!

I love how-to vids. They make me feel like I’ve learned something. 🙂

I’ve watched some videos on how to curl my hair and tried a few or rather a lot of times, though most time I failed, but the “curling the hair around the straightener and then turning the straightener around” sounds like it could really work. I’m gonna try this out. Thanks for making this nice little video.

Thank you for the video.. I’ve tried a few ways before, but haven’t been too successful. I appreciate your tips. By the way, I totally pictured your voice and actions a different way (not in a good or bad way, just different). It’s funny to me how many readers (including myself) sort of create a blog voice in our heads for the blogs that we read. Maybe next year I’ll get to the healthy living summit and get to meet a lot of the bloggers and actually hear their real voices! ah ha!

You are great! Love your blog and your recipes! I read you and Skinny Runner everyday! I have been curling my hair with a CHI for a long time and do it completely different! I will have to try your way today and see how it goes! To save time, I sometimes put the top half of my hair in hot rollers and do the rest with the CHI. Helps get a little more volume on the top and I can always go over it with the CHI to get tighter curls.

    Thanks for the video!

I wish I had longer hair to try this little trick! Chi’s are AMAZING. If mine ever kicks the bucket I’m shaving my head.

Thanks for the video Julie! I am going to try that today…I have a CHI but for some reason whenever I curl my hair with a curling iron it NEVER stays no matter how much hair spray I use….I think we have similar super thin and straight hair so I’m excited to see it works for you…gives me hope!

Nooo, not dorky at all! I loved it. I’ve tried to YouTube other straightener-curling videos and ended up being confused, burnt, and cranky. So yours was really easy, straightforward, and will hopefully lead to curling success. I’m going to try it out after I shower! 🙂

Have fun on your POM adventure.

Contrary to some of the other comments, you sound exactly as I thought you would! And the tutorial worked – I tried it this morn and success! The wrapping the hair around the iron is key. I had tried it a long time ago and just did the 360 turn of the flatiron with no luck. Thanks girl : )

I love videos that let me see a blogger’s actual personality and mannerisms!
You actually inspired me to look up youtube videos for how to do this and I think I finally got it last night on my third attempt, when I was almost done with my hair and my husband was rushing me out the door (of course!). The key seems to really be to twist the hair around the iron. The first time I tried my hair wasn’t quite long enough for me to do that without burning myself. I also have a cheap-o straightener that seems to work well (especially with hairspray help) but I just use smaller bunches of hair.
    Those are my discoveries anyway!
