Hula Hooper

June 15, 2010 by Julie 53 Comments

Usually the people who are up running around the lake by our apartment before 7 a.m. look pretty hardcore. They’re decked out in spandex and an old race t-shirt, and check their Garmin every 2.2 seconds.

On my morning run with Sadie today, however, we saw something out of the ordinary: a hula hoop walker.

Hula Hooper

We saw a woman walking the mile loop around the lake while hula hooping. This lady had skills!

I thought Sadie would be spooked by the hoop, but she kept her cool and we ran right past the  woman. To Sadie, baby strollers = scary, hula hoopers = not so much.

"You Got Nothin' Hula Hoops!"

The heat during our five-mile run was really intense. There’s one heck of a heatwave in Central Florida right now and it made our run a little more challenging than usual. I was sweating like crazy and felt fatigued much earlier in the run that I normally do. I’m downing water like a mad woman now. Gotta rehydrate!

Breakfast

This past weekend at Ryan’s mom’s house, I spotted Libby’s canned pumpkin in her pantry. I freaked out and asked her where she found it because our local grocery store hasn’t stocked pumpkin in months.

The Elusive Pumpkin

She said she’d had the pumpkin for a while and offered to let me take two cans back to Orlando. Sweet!!!

I was pretty excited to include the canned pumpkin in a yogurt barley breakfast bowl this morning.

Apple + Pumpkin + Barley + Yogurt

I added freshly chopped apple and sweetener to the mix for a little extra crunch and sweetness.

Most of the apple went directly into my mouth and only several little chunks actually made it into the breakfast bowl.

Stirred Up

Git in Mah Belly!

Oh pumpkin, how I’ve missed you!

Question of the Morning

Can you hula hoop?

I can… for about 10 seconds. 🙂

What is up with grocery stores in FL not carrying canned pumpkin? I’ve been looking for it since January. Is there a pumpkin shortage or something going on?

Haven’t tried hula hooping in years- the little kid in me is dying to try it again!!

I love to hula hoop (when one is available, of course). I won a contest at my church when I was little for hola hooping the longest out of a whole bunch of kids. It was my shining moment! Lol. Also, I’m glad to see someone else likes pumpkin out of season. I just finished up a can, and I enjoyed it in oh-so-many yogurt breakfasts. It’s the perfect add-in.

I bought a Hula Hoop last summer after having taking a pole dancing class and a brief 10 minute introduction to hooping as a class. It’s a great ab workout. I should dig my hula hoop out and resume getting some hooping in while watching tv (fun and easy ab workout). Sometimes I can get in a good groove and hoop for what seems like every, other times I just can’t get it. Great post! Thanks 🙂

PUMPKIN! That’s the only good thing about the end of summer, the return of the pumpkin! They stopped stocking it right after Christmas this year, though, so I’m in the midst of some serious deprivation right now, hahah. I love it mixed with yogurt, cottage cheese, sweetner, cinnamon, nutmeg, and cloves! Tastes just like pumpkin pie filling!

I used to hula-hoop all the time when I was little! I would stand in front of the TV after school and watch my favorite cartoon shows while hula-hooping. I think my record was 30 minutes, but it was because I stopped purposely.

Have you seen those hula-hoop dancers? I don’t know what exactly they’re called, but they’ve been the craze lately! You can probably find some clips on YouTube.

Hope the heatwave settles a bit and gives you and your running buddy a break 🙂

    Happy Tuesday!

I’m a TERRIBLE hula hooper! Was she using one of the weighted ones that is supposed to work your core extra hard? I’ve heard of entire diet/exercise routines being based around one of those.

I made the mistake of buying a weighted hula hoop. It was very easy to do, but it bruised my hips! Sticking to a regular hoop from now on…
