Just Like That

November 3, 2011 by Julie 76 Comments

My mom was here… and then, just like that, she’s gone again!

mom daughter

(That picture makes me want to go back to London!)

My mom arrived in Ocala around 11 a.m. and we spent the next few hours together working on some personal business.

We made sure to take time to meet up with Ryan for lunch at Crisper’s where we all ordered salads.

southwest salad 001

I ordered the southwest salad with blackened chicken, corn, black beans, tomatoes, carrots and green peppers.

After lunch, my mom and I got back to business and ran some errands before she had to get back on the road with Sadie.

Sadie will be spending the weekend with my parents since Ryan and I will be running our little hearts out in Savannah.

Speaking of Savannah, I checked the weather forecast for the morning of our race this afternoon…

savannah forecast

For us Florida folks, temperatures in the 40s are cold, but I like running in chilly weather about 10,000 times more than weather that makes me feel like my skin is going to melt off my bones.

I’m thinking I’ll wear running capris, a dri-fit tank and a long-sleeved lightweight hoodie on race day. I’ll probably bring a fleece with me to the race site, but leave it at the bag check before we run.

I’m not very experienced in chilly-weather running, but I’m pretty sure temperatures close to 50 degrees are ideal for distance races.

I know this may sound crazy, but I feel like I’m almost as excited about the race expo as I am about the race itself.

Check out the description:

For two days, over 60 exhibitors will offer free samples, showcase the latest in running gear, sports apparel, health & nutritional information and much more.

I didn’t even know what a race expo was until last year when I attended one before the Chicago Rock ‘n’ Roll half marathon. Now I know that they’re jam packed with free samples and booths filled with awesome workout gear. So much fun!

I think I’m ready to be in Savannah now.

Be sure to follow PBFingers on Instagram and Facebook!

I'd love to connect with you! I am always so grateful when you let me know you tried one of my recipes or workouts and tag me in your photos or updates. Thank you so much!!!

Race expos are the best! They have so many good deals there for sure!

Looks like perfect weather! Bring an extra pair of socks when you are just hanging around at the start for your hands. Then just toss them when you start. Its sooo nice to not have freezing hands 🙂

    Good luck at the race!!!

50 degrees is considered the “perfect” race temperature!

You might want to stop off at a thrift store for some cheap throw away clothes so you stay warm before the race starts.

    Good luck!

I love race expos!! So many things to look at , but the best thing to remember is not to try any of the new things on race day! Fortunately I’ve never had to learn that the hard way, but I know some people who have. Glad you had fun with your mom!

Expo’s are the BEST. I go to Expo’s of races I am not even running! But then I go easy on the free stuff. I figure the free stuff is to offset the race fee’s.

    Good Luck in Savannah!!!

I live in Savannah(not running the race though), and I know the race starts on Bay street(which is down by the river). Prepare for it to feel much colder down there by the water!

    Good luck!

I’d like to, but I have to work! Plus, I live outside of Savannah(in Pooler) so getting downtown would be a trick in and of itself since the whole area is shut down.

The race expo sounds like a lot of fun. I love running in chilly weather. During the summer running seems like a chore, but now with the weather in the 50s it’s run and relaxing.

Think back to your days living in the beautiful state of Illinois. That is seriously the best running weather ever. Yes, a bit chilly at the start, but a mile in you won’t even notice!

Best of luck to you, you’ll be great!

I would skip the lightweight hoodie, unless you don’t mind tying it around your waist if you get hot. I just ran a half, it was 49 degrees at the start and warmed up to 52, I wore shorts and a shortsleeve t-shirt and was perfect. Maybe try some arm warmers (or socks as arm warmers) if you think your arms will get cold, but I think in the 2 layers of shirts you will definitely overheat. I’d definitely have a throw away shirt for at the start though, especially if you’ll be standing around for a while. Good luck!

If you’re going to be running hard, you might actually get warm. I live in AZ so I know those low temps seem scary but if it’s getting into the high 50’s while you’re still running it will feel perfect! I would wear shorts and a t-shirt or tank top but bring sweats and a jacket from Goodwill that you can toss aside. Also, at Goodwill every day they have a “color” (usually shown on the window or right when you walk in) where anything with a tag that color is 50% off. Most races will collect the discarded clothing and donate it. So you can basically borrow a sweatshirt for $1.50!!

best wishes on the race. you can also buy a cheapy sweatshirt at a thrift store, then throw it off. did that for a half/full marathon we have here in fresno. the organizers later gather everything and donate’m. but yeah, cool weather is def. best to run in. my body functions so much better.

enjoy savannah! on my list of places to visit. check out paula deen’s restaurant if you’re able. might see now if they have any open reservations.

i have grand dreams to run the ing new york marathon next fall and raise funds for the national stroke association.
