National Doughnut Day

June 1, 2012 by Julie 99 Comments

Happy National Doughnut Day!

Who’s celebrating with me?

Just in case you want to party in the kitchen this weekend and celebrate Doughnut Day at the same time, I highly recommend making my mom’s homemade doughnut munchkins.

homemade doughnut munchkins

They were always a huge hit at sleepovers growing up. They’re unreal and super simple!

I made sure to head over to Dunkin’ Donuts to get my free doughnut for the day (with a drink purchase). I initially picked my all-time favorite doughnut, the apple fritter, but was told that particular doughnut was “too fancy” and wasn’t included in the free doughnut promotion.

I scanned the peasant doughnuts for my plan b selection. I immediately skipped over any and all cake doughnuts. (Only wackadoodles prefer cake doughnuts over soft, pillowy doughnuts. I’m looking at you, Meghann.)

In the end I picked a chocolate kreme-filled doughnut.

dunkin donuts chocolate kreme filled

It was a soft, traditional doughnut with a little extra flare from the powered sugar and filling. Nice and doughy! The kreme tasted like cake frosting. Doughnut heaven!

Lunch

After getting some work done this morning and before heading off to Dunkin’ Donuts for my little treat (I’m blogging from there right now! Yay for free wifi!), I met up with a friend for lunch at Moe’s.

I tried to cram as many veggies into my midday meals as possible and opted for a salad, topped with lots of fixings.

moe's salad with beans I asked for double the beans which was a smart decision. Mmm!

moe's salad

I’m hoping to cram in a few more hours of work at Dunkin’ Donuts before heading home and doing something with the ridiculously ripe bananas we have chillin’ in our pantry. I’m thinkin’ banana bread!

Question of the Afternoon

Totally stealing this question from Meghann…

  • What is your favorite kind of doughnut? (If you say a cake doughnut, I guess we can still be friends.)

My all-time favorite doughnut is the apple fritter, but I also love those glazed twisty doughnuts. Ryan’s favorite is a glazed doughnut with pink frosting and sprinkles. No lie!

I'd love to connect with you! I am always so grateful when you let me know you tried one of my recipes or workouts and tag me in your photos or updates. Thank you so much!!!

I’m simple and just like basic donut holes. For some reason, even as a kid, the ones with filling (like yours) make me nauseous to think about! Biting into goo just grosses me out!

No, no cake doughnut lovers need not apply. It’s all about the bear claw. Or the yeast, glazed. Or the yeast, chocolate glazed. Or an apple fritter…I can’t choose my favorite doughnut! It’s like Sophie’s Choice!!!

My job literally just dropped. That sounds amazing. My mom occasionally makes my great-grandmother’s donuts with orange glaze that are phenom. BUT they take a billion years to make and I am an impatient soul who can drive to KK in a shorter timeframe…

My aunt made that once, too! I have to say, unfortunately, I thought it was kind of gross…

Also unfortunately…my fav donut is almost any cake donut or a pershing with maple frosting. I don’t like any filled donuts and especially hate jelly donuts! 😉

I loooooove apple fritters too! Unfortunately, I can’t eat them anymore. I did, however, find some frozen gluten-free donuts at the grocery store the other day. They are of the cake variety, but they’re satisfying enough…being my only option and all. 🙂

I’m not a huge doughnut person. However, if I do have one I prefer…cake doughnuts with pin icing and sprinkles! Sorry…unless it is a super soft and perfect glazed doughnut (rare), then I like those better.

And, question: is “donut” now an approved spelling thanks to Dunkin’ Donuts? My spell check didn’t flag it…curious.

Cake donuts are lame I agree! A glazed donut with chocolate icing and sprinkles is the best to me! Strawberry jelly filled is second. I wish I had a local dunkin donuts to take advantage of my donut love. I guess Ill settle for a confetti cake blizzard from dq. They are amazing!
