Happy National Doughnut Day!
Who’s celebrating with me?
Just in case you want to party in the kitchen this weekend and celebrate Doughnut Day at the same time, I highly recommend making my mom’s homemade doughnut munchkins.
They were always a huge hit at sleepovers growing up. They’re unreal and super simple!
I made sure to head over to Dunkin’ Donuts to get my free doughnut for the day (with a drink purchase). I initially picked my all-time favorite doughnut, the apple fritter, but was told that particular doughnut was “too fancy” and wasn’t included in the free doughnut promotion.
I scanned the peasant doughnuts for my plan b selection. I immediately skipped over any and all cake doughnuts. (Only wackadoodles prefer cake doughnuts over soft, pillowy doughnuts. I’m looking at you, Meghann.)
In the end I picked a chocolate kreme-filled doughnut.
It was a soft, traditional doughnut with a little extra flare from the powered sugar and filling. Nice and doughy! The kreme tasted like cake frosting. Doughnut heaven!
Lunch
After getting some work done this morning and before heading off to Dunkin’ Donuts for my little treat (I’m blogging from there right now! Yay for free wifi!), I met up with a friend for lunch at Moe’s.
I tried to cram as many veggies into my midday meals as possible and opted for a salad, topped with lots of fixings.
I asked for double the beans which was a smart decision. Mmm!
I’m hoping to cram in a few more hours of work at Dunkin’ Donuts before heading home and doing something with the ridiculously ripe bananas we have chillin’ in our pantry. I’m thinkin’ banana bread!
Question of the Afternoon
Totally stealing this question from Meghann…
- What is your favorite kind of doughnut? (If you say a cake doughnut, I guess we can still be friends.)
My all-time favorite doughnut is the apple fritter, but I also love those glazed twisty doughnuts. Ryan’s favorite is a glazed doughnut with pink frosting and sprinkles. No lie!
krista says
I’m simple and just like basic donut holes. For some reason, even as a kid, the ones with filling (like yours) make me nauseous to think about! Biting into goo just grosses me out!
Sarah says
No, no cake doughnut lovers need not apply. It’s all about the bear claw. Or the yeast, glazed. Or the yeast, chocolate glazed. Or an apple fritter…I can’t choose my favorite doughnut! It’s like Sophie’s Choice!!!
peanutbutterfingers says
this literally made me LOL. 🙂
Krista @ Blonde Aesthetic says
Standard krispy kremes! and their cinnamon bun cousin.
Julie @ Peanut Butter Fingers says
one time my mom made bread pudding with krispy kremes. unreal.
Krista @ Blonde Aesthetic says
My job literally just dropped. That sounds amazing. My mom occasionally makes my great-grandmother’s donuts with orange glaze that are phenom. BUT they take a billion years to make and I am an impatient soul who can drive to KK in a shorter timeframe…
Liz says
My aunt made that once, too! I have to say, unfortunately, I thought it was kind of gross…
Also unfortunately…my fav donut is almost any cake donut or a pershing with maple frosting. I don’t like any filled donuts and especially hate jelly donuts! 😉
Stephanie @ Mr and Meatless says
I loooooove apple fritters too! Unfortunately, I can’t eat them anymore. I did, however, find some frozen gluten-free donuts at the grocery store the other day. They are of the cake variety, but they’re satisfying enough…being my only option and all. 🙂
Sylvia @ Frolic Through Life says
I am so stopping to get my free doughnut on the way home! I mean it’s a national holiday..it’s like our civic duty to enjoy doughnuts today, right? 😉
Lauren says
I literally JUST ate one of Ryan’s favorite donut! Yum! that’s too funny
Yaitza says
Awww! YUM! Nothing like a “Hello, Welcome to Moe’s” sound…I miss Florida ;o(
Lauren @ Call Me Mrs. Rapp says
I’m not a huge doughnut person. However, if I do have one I prefer…cake doughnuts with pin icing and sprinkles! Sorry…unless it is a super soft and perfect glazed doughnut (rare), then I like those better.
And, question: is “donut” now an approved spelling thanks to Dunkin’ Donuts? My spell check didn’t flag it…curious.
Stephanie @ Legally Blinde says
Ooh yum! I love creme sticks with chocolate frosting 🙂 And I totally agree with you about cake donuts – way inferior, haha.
Khushboo says
Despite my sweet tooth, I’m not a fan of donuts…too sweet! Although back in the day, glazed were my fave!
Hope @ With A Side Of Hope says
I love glazed donuts, vanilla frosted or a local place near me makes peanut butter filled! It’s absolutely incredible! 🙂 My fiance loves the pink frosted ones too! Haha!
krystal@coffeecardiogoddess says
Cake donuts are lame I agree! A glazed donut with chocolate icing and sprinkles is the best to me! Strawberry jelly filled is second. I wish I had a local dunkin donuts to take advantage of my donut love. I guess Ill settle for a confetti cake blizzard from dq. They are amazing!
Jenna says
My all time favorite doughnut is the one you ended up choosing! Your picture had me drooling! Oh and Ryan’s favorite is also my 6 year old niece’s fav hehe no judging…just sayin 😉
Mallory @ Have your cake says
hahaha that was my ex’s favorite! too funny
Alexa @ SImple Eats says
You know what’s funny? Almost every person I know who loves the pink frosted ones is a GUY! So weird!
Amy @ Inspiredamy says
In canada it’s allll about the Timbits from Tim Hortons. My favorite flavor has to be chocolate dusted with powdered sugar. You can’t go wrong with deep fried sugary dough rolled in more sugar 😉
Emily says
I’m actually not a doughnut person… but when I do have a rare craving, I will go for the cinnamon/ sugar kind or the chocolate glazed doughnut holes! They go perfect with a glass of ice cold milk 🙂
Have a great weekend!
Tara @ Chip Chip Hooray says
Noooo, long live the cake donut!! I swoon for chocolate cake donuts…with glaze. And/or frosting.
When I do donuts, I do it up for real. 😉
Claire @ Live and Love to Eat says
I like the frosted raised donuts. With sprinkles, of course.
Dana says
that donut looks so good! my family and i just had a conversation last night about how good doughnuts are. we just cant pick a favorite!
Kaelin says
I’m sorry you’re so against cake doughnuts, but then again I’m not, because that leaves more for me!!! 🙂
I love love love blueberry cake doughnuts followed closely by chocolate cake doughnuts followed closely by sour cream cake doughnuts. I like cake. Fried and glaze cake is even better!
Abby @ Change of Pace says
The salad looks delicious!
I prefer plain donuts- a traditional glazed or Boston Cream.
Sarah @ RunningChickago.com says
Sorry Julie, but I’m totally with Meghann on this one. Cake doughnuts are the best! 🙂 Although when I was younger, I used to always get Ryan’s pink-frosted doughnut. That was always my go-to.
Steph @ StephSnacks says
I like the pink frosted, too!
Ashley @ The North Carolina Cowgirl says
I love love love crullers! Too bad Krispy Kreme and Dunkin Donuts don’t sell them anymore. 🙁
Caroline @ After Dinner Dance says
I hate cake doughnuts! My favorite is chocolate iced with sprinkles – I almost never get anything else! And I’m thinking about making banana bread this weekend too – with pineapples!
Lindsey says
Boston cream with the pudding type cream versus whipped cream (which I don’t like at all!), my all time favorite is from a grocery store here where the Boston Cream has has vanilla icing and half chocolate icing with half sprinkles.
christina says
Since I have celiac disease I can’t have doughnuts, but my favorite gluten free doughnut is Kinnickinick Chocolate Glazed Vegan and Gluten Free doughnuts! OMG THEY ARE SO DELICIOUS! Before I was diagnosed with celiac disease I loved jelly filled doughnuts with lots of powdered sugar on top! My little sister’s favorite doughnut is Ryan’s favorite doughnut! Pink frosting and sprinkles!
Sarah says
I’m with you on the Cake Doughnuts, just nasty!
My favorite is a regular doughnut with sugar (no glaze.) Maple bar is a close second though.
Brooke says
Definitely an apple fritter, or choc. covered & Filled with Cream doughnut lover!!!
Mary Babicki says
Definitely Dunkin’ Donuts powdered sugar vanilla cream filled. SOOOO good.
Ashley @ My Food 'N' Fitness Diaries says
i agree with you on the cake doughnuts! i LOVE krispy kreme’s chocolate glazed doughnuts. ahh SO good!
Kim says
Blueberry CAKE donuts. MMMM
chelsey @ clean eating chelsey says
I love cake doughnuts! They’re the best – specifically the chocolate glazed ones with chocolate frosting. Yum!
Jessica says
Julie, the exact same thing happened to me at dunkin today! I wanted an apple fritter (my favorite, too!) and was told I had to pick another donut instead 🙂
Katie @ Peace Love and Oats says
I loved Moe’s in college! Wish I had one near me! And I haven’t had a donut in ages… I do remember liking cinnamon sugar!
erica says
chocolate covered glazed donuts! aw heck, lets add those little rainbow sprinkles too!
{i totally am not a fan of cake donuts…too heavy!}
Kelly says
Cake doughnuts RULE!! I like blueberry and cake doughnuts the best!!
Emily Butler @EmilysHomestead says
Seriously, cake donuts do suck. I love donuts that are glazed all around AND contain a rich chocolate frosting on top of that WITH lots of sprinkles.
I’m also NOT a fan of FILLED donuts.
Beks says
I love those yeasty twisty doughnuts best. Especially glazed or covered in cinnamon/sugar! YUM! Apple Fritters are a close second, though. Kind of think that the creme-filled kind is a bit fancier than Apple Fritters, but I guess I’m just not in the know when it comes to doughnuts.
Laura says
too funny! I went to Dunkin this morning for a coffee and they said they were giving everyone a free donut and what would I like? Talk about a pleasant surprise! Didn’t realize it was national donut day 🙂 I got maple – definitely my favorite!!
Jihane @Sinful Sundays says
Hater! LOL! Chocolate cake donuts are the ish!
Taylor says
The vanilla cream filled donut for sure! Though I can’t remember the last time I had one 🙁
As a kid the Sweet Sixteen powdered donuts were my favorites. My mom never bought them often because my brother and I could polish them off in one sitting… oops.
Kelly says
I have to say and old fashioned sour cream donut. Don’t be a hater 😉
Katie says
I can’t stand cake donuts! I love plain glazed donuts but I haven’t had one in ages.
Annette@FitnessPerks says
I’m not really a donut person…..but my husband might like one–we must go grab some for him!
Minerva says
French Cruellers! Oh my doughy-centered word! So good.
Megan@The Running Doc says
I love the strawberry frosted donuts! Though without the sprinkles. 🙂
Heather @ Run Eat Play says
My dad loves the apple fritters too. I had a bite of his for the first time last weekend.
I love jelly donuts! But I’ve never met a donut that i didn’t like.
Stephanie R says
I saw that on DDD and have always wanted to go there!!!
Angela says
I am right there with you on the apple fritters. YUM! Also, old fashioned ones are delicious! Here in Portland we have a place called Voodoo Donuts. Such a tourist attraction but so so yummy! 🙂
Meaghan@ChooseYourJourney says
I had no idea there were different kinds of donuts. (cake vs. whatever). When I’m at DD, it’s all about the bagels.
