Netflix Documentaries

December 3, 2014 by Julie 100 Comments

Ryan and I really enjoy watching documentaries on Netflix together. One huge item on my travel wish list is to see whales in the wild one day, so when I saw a documentary film titled The Whale on Netflix last night, I hit play and Ryan and I curled up to watch it together.

Sleepy Dog (2)

(Sadie was less than interested.)

In just over an hour, I fell in love with Luna, a sweet whale who was separated from his family and sought out human contact in Nootka Sound, Canada. The footage of Luna was truly incredible. The film touched on his odd behavior, anthropomorphism (the attribution of human characteristics to animals – they called him “lonely” and discussed his desire for “friendship”), the dangers of interacting with whales and Luna’s unshakable desire for human attention. It was an incredible film, but grab a tissue if you decide to watch it!

And just in case you share our love for documentaries, here’s a list of 25 documentary recommendations that you can currently stream on Netflix from Paste Magazine:

25. The Square
24. Cutie and the Boxer

11. Room 237
10. This Is Not a Film

8. Into the Abyss

7. Senna

Always love reading your posts, Julie! I want to fill you in on one more documentary that’s really worth watching that my family and I watched over Thanksgiving break. It’s called “Burt’s Buzz” and it follows Burt, the face behind all the great Burt’s Bees products. It takes a few minutes to get in to, but it’s a really great documentary and very interesting to see the backstory! You and Ryan will have to check it out 🙂

Last week my boyfriend watched a Netflix documentary that he’s been talking about ever since about Burt from Burt’s Bees. He keeps telling me I have to watch it – apparently it’s a very interesting story behind the brand. I think it’s called Burt’s Buzz, or something along those lines! I also LOVE Blackfish – but I’m sure you’ve seen it already. It totally changed the way I view SeaWorld (sadly). 🙁

Holy cow!! I am so happy you saw that documentary!! I actually lived in Gold River, BC (the town in Nootka Sound) when Luna was there and I personally fell in love. Going down to the docks on the weekend was so special and I can’t even describe the feeling of seeing Luna and looking into her gorgeous big eyes. Don’t tell anyone, but I actually touched Luna’s tongue and rubbed her back when she was swimming along the dock one day, and even though a few weeks later laws were enforced and someone was arrested for doing that, I honestly don’t regret it at all. Seeing her so lonely and just wanting to play and be around people was amazing and I am so thankful I was involved in her life. I think when people see the documentary and hear the First Nation Peoples talk about the spiritual side of the story, it sounds kind of crazy, but it really gives me goosebumps to think about it because you had to be there to “feel it.” Luna was such a special whale and definitely still holds a place in my heart. There is nothing like living on Vancouver Island 🙂
