Netflix Documentaries

December 3, 2014 by Julie 100 Comments

Ryan and I really enjoy watching documentaries on Netflix together. One huge item on my travel wish list is to see whales in the wild one day, so when I saw a documentary film titled The Whale on Netflix last night, I hit play and Ryan and I curled up to watch it together.

Sleepy Dog (2)

(Sadie was less than interested.)

In just over an hour, I fell in love with Luna, a sweet whale who was separated from his family and sought out human contact in Nootka Sound, Canada. The footage of Luna was truly incredible. The film touched on his odd behavior, anthropomorphism (the attribution of human characteristics to animals – they called him “lonely” and discussed his desire for “friendship”), the dangers of interacting with whales and Luna’s unshakable desire for human attention. It was an incredible film, but grab a tissue if you decide to watch it!

And just in case you share our love for documentaries, here’s a list of 25 documentary recommendations that you can currently stream on Netflix from Paste Magazine:

Yes, we enjoy documentaries. We just watched one on Netflix about Honeybadgers – those things are crazy smart. Next on our list to watch is Burt’s Buzz.

I’m with you, I love nerdy educational movies! There’s a marathon documentary on Netflix but I forget what’s it’s called. Either way, it’s great and you should look into it!

I love watching documentaries! I like a wide range. I loved The Cove, Forks Over Knives, American Meth, Tapped, and Devil’s Playground to name a few! I’ll have to look into some on your list!

I don’t know if it is still on there but you must see Head Games. It’s about all the post-concussion injuries in sports and it’s insane.

You MUST watch the documentary Monica & David on Netflix! It’s about a young couple with Down Syndrome who are getting married. It’s interesting and so sweet and uplifting, I promise you will love it (and them)!

I watched the Business of Being Born before having my baby girl and thought it was super interesting. Although I didn’t agree with all that was said (I had my baby girl in a hospital with an epidural), I DID find the documentary super informative.

I’m ALL about the documentaries on Netflix! Some of my favorites on Netflix include First Position, Jig, (those first two are uplifting films about elite kid dancers!) Elephant in the Living Room (<– grab those tissues again) and The Waiting Room.

I’m also a huge documentary nerd! I love feeling like I’m learning something. I highly recommend Cutie and the Boxer & Jiro Dreams of Sushi (especially if you’re a sushi fan).

And I’m not sure if this is available on Netflix or not (I think it is), but Katie Couric’s documentary Fed Up is really well done and offers an eye-opening look at the state of food production, sugar consumption , and the obesity epidemic – a topic I’m personally super passionate about.

    Thanks for the great list!

I just watched the documentary, Dear Zachary, and it was the most heartbreaking thing I’ve ever seen. I wouldn’t really recommend it, as it was too painful. However, I do recommend The Invisible War. Though it’s also heartbreaking, that documentary has been very instrumental in increasing awareness about the high prevalence of sexual assault in the military. And, while not on Netflix, Escape Fire and Fed Up are also great docs!

We really enjoyed Jiro Loves Sushi! What a fascinating life to lead. Even though he spends so much of his time and life worrying about his sushi craft, he inspired me to try and see things a little more simply. And, since we are on the topic of documentaries, my beau and I also really enjoyed the documentary Burn. It’s about the Detroit Fire Department, and while “enjoyed” might sound callous – it was definitely eye-opening!

    Best documentaries on Netfilx:

Jiro Dreams of Sushi – If you are a sushi fan, it’s fascinating the dedication that it takes to become the best of the best.

The Short Game – One of the cutest, happiest documentaries ever! World championship for golfers in the 8 and under category. They are crazy talented, determined, and hilariously goofy.

I live on Vancouver Island, the region where The Whale was filmed. The sad and scary thing is that orcas our endangered and continue to be threatened further by proposed oil pipelines on our coast.

The pic of Sadie is hilarious, I brought my son Reece as i often do to a local book store yday, they have a cosy area to sit and read the books, we chose one of puppies under water, There were a few of Sadies Breed (spelling?) and I thought of Sadie, so so cute:) Oh documentaries? we never stop although we have the weirdest taste, We are both really into history, mostly military (geeky i know) so spend a lot of time watching those, also ANY to do with wild cats and great whites. Our household is so freaked out by great whites but yet obsessed with any docs on them! I will look out for that one on whales, such stunning animals, I watched one before (more a programme than doc) where the mother was attacked by Killer whales and separated from the calf, she fought them of for hours and in the end managed to push them away:) sniff okay i best stop nowxx

I love watching documentaries also! One of the first ones I watched after getting netflix was Tapped, about the bottled water industry. It completely changed the way I look at water and I almost never drink bottled water now.

It’s amazing what a little free knowledge can do 🙂

[…] After we dropped Ryan’s mom off at the airport on Sunday night, Ryan and I curled up on the couch to watch a new-to-us documentary, Stop At Nothing: The Lance Armstrong Story. We’ve been really into watching Netflix documentaries on Sunday nights lately and I’m surprisingly finding myself very intrigued by sports-related documentaries. (Based on a friend’s recommendation we watched Slaying The Badger last weekend and thought it was really interesting. If you’re at all interested in the Tour de France, I highly recommend it. It’s also what inspired us to watch the documentary on Lance Armstrong last night.) If you’ve watched a great documentary lately, I’d love to hear about it and add it to our Sunday night must-watch list! And if you’re also into documentaries, you may be interested in this post I shared last year with a list of Top Netflix Documentaries. […]
