Sky Blogging

March 22, 2013 by Julie 91 Comments

Hello from the skies!

I am several hours into my flight and should really be sleeping like everyone around me but I can’t, so I decided to flip open my laptop and chat with you fine people! (This post will be published once I have access to internet again.)

I am currently flying Virgin Atlantic and I must say I’m pretty darn impressed! (Ryan actually found a non-stop flight for me on Virgin Atlantic that was quite a bit cheaper than the other flights I was finding that had a billion layovers. Super score!) I’ve never flown Virgin Atlantic before, but so far I am a fan.

They gave us presents!

Virgin Atlantic Feel Good Kit

We got a “Feel Good Kit” that included a spiffy eye mask (my favorite part), a tooth brush, tiny toothpaste, earplugs and socks. And that was just for those of us hanging out in economy. First class got foot massages! Totally kidding. Did I get anyone?

Once we were airborne, I played with the touch-screen television in front of me and was psyched to see a ton of movies. I was even more excited when I saw that they had Silver Linings Playbook!

IMG_0039

I am totally on the I love Jennifer Lawrence train that everyone else seems to be on these days and really wanted to see this movie when it first came out but never got around to it. I watched the whole movie and really, really liked it. Now I want to read the book!

About halfway through movie time, dinner was served.

Virgin Atlantic Gluten Free Dinner

I actually got a gluten-free dinner by mistake and though I was confused at first, since I already opened it, I said I would eat it anyway and was really happy with the meal. It looked better than the other dinner options and seemed to be pretty darn healthy for airplane food.

chicken and rice virgin atlantic

Now that I have a full stomach, I am hoping my sleepiness will kick in soon. In the meantime, I’m going to put on my eye mask and listen to a little Elton John.

IMG_0043

I grew up listening to Elton John (“Your Song” is actually my parents’ song) and listening to his music always takes me back to childhood and makes me smile.

Hoping to drift off to sleep soon!

Question of the Day

  • What’s the coolest or best thing/feature/meal/snack you’ve ever seen offered on a flight?

Be sure to follow PBFingers on Instagram and Facebook!

I'd love to connect with you! I am always so grateful when you let me know you tried one of my recipes or workouts and tag me in your photos or updates. Thank you so much!!!

Fancy! I’ve only ever been giving those little cookie/biscuits and soda/water. I’ve never flown too far though!

    How long is your flight?

I flew with Southwest last Christmas and it was such a joy! The crew was decked out in Christmas gear and sang turned their pre-flight safety instructions into a jingle. At the end of the flight they offered trivia to the whole plane- a kid and adult level. I won the adult level after a few people guessed before me and were wrong. The questions was, “What is the only mammal that doesn’t have knees?” The answer- an elephant. I left he plane with a huge smile and have flown Southwest ever since. Glad you had a good experience and hope you have fun on your trip!

They always seem to be nicer to you on longer flights! I love being able to watch movies in the little TV mounted on the chair in front of you. Watching a couple of movies back to the US from Rome was about the only way I was able to endure that long flight. And you don’t have to pay extra for it on those international flights – score! Hope you have fun – I’m sure it will be a blast.

    I’ve got a tie.

One of the best things I ever received was a showing of Casino Royale on the way out to Las Vegas. This was right when Texas Hold ‘Em was becoming popular. Watching the movie taught me how to play the game and got me pumped up for a great time in Vegas.

The other best thing I ever received came at the Continental Airlines President’s Club right before we flew back from Hawaii. My dad wasn’t big on me drinking coffee when I was younger and I spent a week in Hawaii without drinking one cup of coffee. I suffered from major caffeine deprivation that week! However, I grabbed a cup of fresh brewed Kona coffee while we were waiting for our flight. I’ll never forget how great that cup tasted, and I’ll also never forget how that cup and a few subsequent cups kept me up for something like 40 hours!

I don’t think I’ve ever had a really good food feature on a flight, but I’m also terrified of flying, plus a little OCD thing I have which means I can’t eat on flights, and hope no one next to me eats either. Haha, it’s odd. So long flights for me = bad times. Since my anxiety increases when I don’t eat too. I sound like a peach.
Have a safe flight and a ton of fun!

While I have no input on good airplane food (I’ve yet to find any!), I DO have input on “Silver Linings Playbook!” I, too, am a huge Jennifer Lawrence fan and absolutely loved her and Bradley Cooper in the movie. I just finished reading the book last night and highly recommend it. There are definitely differences between the book and the movie, but the book is told from Pat’s perspective so you really get to know what he is thinking and feeling. I’m a mental health therapist, so naturally this was exciting for me! Hope you get around to reading it soon and enjoy your trip!!

Unfortunately, every good thing I’ve ever received on a flight has been on a really short flight, so I couldn’t enjoy too much of it! But I once got bumped up to first class. I have no idea HOW, but I’ve never flown first class before then or since, but it was pretty swanky and I felt awesome. Also, one of my airplanes had DirectTv, so I could catch up on all my shows! Made the flight go by so fast.

When we flew to London last summer, we went through Dublin on Aer Lingus. The food was much better than I expected, and the flight went very smoothly. I think the fact that it was an international company made the experience much better than others. I can’t even remember why I thought that, but I did. I’m jealous that you got to see Silver Linings Playbook! It’s on my last to get once it comes out.

I was working in Greece one summer and on the flight back to Gatwick Airport they gave us fresh blueberry scones, then a giant Twix bar and a little single serving icecream cup! (What?!) That was by far the best….

Absolutely worst = a flight to China where I got a bun and a century egg (preserved…it’s black. Not. Good). It was 15 hours, no lights on in the plane and no movies or anything!

I flew British Air to/from Europe when I studied abroad. On the flight from London to Chicago, the flight attendants offered us mini bottles of wine…free of charge 🙂 I also just finished reading “Silver Linings Playbook” and have yet to see the movie. The book was fantastic!

Finally, I have to say that I love BodyPump, too!!! I know this isn’t at all related to this post, but it’s my favorite class to take at my gym. I’ve been taking it for almost 8 years now and it never gets old!!!

Enjoy your trip! If you’re planning to spend anytime in London, you could always take the Chunnel to Paris for the day… 🙂

Virgin Atlantic is hands down the best airline for Transcontinental flights…and I’ve done my fair share to be able to compare (20+ in my lifetime) . When we flew with them as kids ,they used to hand out the BEST kiddie bags, we’d be entertained for hours.

I flew AirIndia after my study abroad session in Italy. After a layover from Italy to Germany, we flew from Germany to the US on AirIndia…and they served Indian food of course. I like to have Indian food every once in a while. But with a huge airplane full of people who were not used to eating that type of cuisine (especially through turbulence), it ended with many people getting sick. What a smelly 7 hour flight that was. Glad you’re having a much better experience 🙂 Have a fun trip!

We got to travel business class on the way home from our Europe trip this past summer, and it was AMAZING. We got to choose an appetizer, entree, and dessert from a menu. I had an ice cream sundae that was prepared right in front of me! And they served warm chocolate chip cookies. And warm nuts. And mimosas. It was pretty awesome. So glad your trip is off to a great start! That dinner does look surprisingly delicious and healthy for an airline meal! One of the coolest features on a plane I recieved was on the way to the Florida Keys…the plane had a touch screen like the one you are on now, so I could pick and choose what I wanted to listen to and watch. It also had an interactive map that showed the progress the plane was making as we traveled, which I really enjoyed because I knew how much longer the flight was. Have a great trip!
