Sky Blogging

March 22, 2013 by Julie 91 Comments

Hello from the skies!

I am several hours into my flight and should really be sleeping like everyone around me but I can’t, so I decided to flip open my laptop and chat with you fine people! (This post will be published once I have access to internet again.)

I am currently flying Virgin Atlantic and I must say I’m pretty darn impressed! (Ryan actually found a non-stop flight for me on Virgin Atlantic that was quite a bit cheaper than the other flights I was finding that had a billion layovers. Super score!) I’ve never flown Virgin Atlantic before, but so far I am a fan.

They gave us presents!

Virgin Atlantic Feel Good Kit

We got a “Feel Good Kit” that included a spiffy eye mask (my favorite part), a tooth brush, tiny toothpaste, earplugs and socks. And that was just for those of us hanging out in economy. First class got foot massages! Totally kidding. Did I get anyone?

Once we were airborne, I played with the touch-screen television in front of me and was psyched to see a ton of movies. I was even more excited when I saw that they had Silver Linings Playbook!

I am totally on the I love Jennifer Lawrence train that everyone else seems to be on these days and really wanted to see this movie when it first came out but never got around to it. I watched the whole movie and really, really liked it. Now I want to read the book!

About halfway through movie time, dinner was served.

Virgin Atlantic Gluten Free Dinner

I actually got a gluten-free dinner by mistake and though I was confused at first, since I already opened it, I said I would eat it anyway and was really happy with the meal. It looked better than the other dinner options and seemed to be pretty darn healthy for airplane food.

Now that I have a full stomach, I am hoping my sleepiness will kick in soon. In the meantime, I’m going to put on my eye mask and listen to a little Elton John.

I grew up listening to Elton John (“Your Song” is actually my parents’ song) and listening to his music always takes me back to childhood and makes me smile.

Hoping to drift off to sleep soon!

Question of the Day

Those gifts look awesome! The best meal I’ve ever had on a plane was flying home after I spent a few months living in Ghana. They handed out tiny bologna sandwiches as big as my pointer finger, but after 10 weeks of acting nothing but rice and beans, bread was heavenly!!! I was so excited.

Wow, that all seems really impressive! The food actually looks really good for being airplane food. I will have to keep Virgin Atlantic in mind in my future travels. I bet they didn’t know they would get such good publicity from one of their passengers! It is a good thing that they treated you well! 😉

That “Feel Good Kit” looks awesome! I’ve never gotten anything cool on a flight because the furthest I’ve flown was from Las Vegas to Orlando-there was never any need for anything other than pretzels and water/soda.
I haven’t seen the movie but Silver Linings Playbook was a great book!

I always get a little nervous about what will/won’t be offered on flights so I pack a ridiculous amount of food haha Your meal doesn’t look too bad though!
Wishing you safe travels and a fantastic trip!

I can’t wait to see Silver Linings Playbook.
Business Class on KLM (Dutch) would put out a big basket of candy–really good, European goodies. I’d always stuff a few extra in my bag!

A couple of years ago I flew with British airways from London to NY and back. There was a similar feel good pack,3 meals and unlimited drink, so I must say that many passengers got too tipsy and became too talkative. 🙂
I would not say that these things are for free. I would rather pay my ticket 100 euros less and watch movie on my ipad. In Europe I use low cost companies because a lot because of that. I hope that they start flying overseas soon!
    Have fun in Ireland!

My husband and I were lucky enough to fly first class to Tokyo a couple summers back and they gave us Bose headphones for the flight that were so awesome. You literally couldn’t hear anything! It made the long flight more bearable. Enjoy Ireland, hope you have a blast!!

Qatar Airlines is the best! I flew from DC to Doha, Qatar and Doha to Ahmedabad, India and it was the best! Spacious chairs, more reclining than most other airlines, food was edible, free wine/beer for coach, and they gave us hot towels multiple times during the flight! Everyone is so nice and that is a big plus for me when you’re on a 15+hr flight!! AND everything was clean! We got a similar kit that you did with moist wipes, hand gel, eye masks, earplugs, headphones (Bose headphones in 1st class), etc. Definitely recommend Qatar for anyone flying to the South Asia area!

Last year my husband and I traveled to Switzerland with a layover in Turkey. On Turkish Air, they served a little dish of tomato, cucumber, soft white cheese, and olives, which was delicious but a little strange to have for breakfast (at least for an American)! Even at the hotel in Turkey, on the buffet table they served the same items.

I can’t really think of the best airplane food I have received but when I was flying to Bulgaria we took Bulgaria Air form Amsterdam to Sofia and we were served what looked like cheese and some sort of meat pinwheels with, unidentifiable mix of vegetables (I think), and a dry white roll. The best part of the meal was it lowered my expectations for the food in Bulgaria so I wasn’t as disappointed in the food once I got there.

Enjoy your trip. Ireland is gorgeous.

Great movie! I just saw it last Saturday.

Favorite airline food was the chocolate chip cookies baked in flight on Midwest Airlines. So good! Plus, they had roomy seats and leg space.

Glad your flight went well! We flew on Turkish Airlines from Switzerland to South Africa and were super impressed by the food and service, as well. In fact, when they found out it was my birthday, the first class chef put together a fancy fruit plate and wrote happy birthday on it in chocolate. Isn’t it great to be so pleasantly surprised?!

I’ve never had anything that good on a flight. I’m pretty sure just the standard pretzels and/ or peanuts, but I’ve only done 3 hour flights as my max so far.

International air carriers are SO different than domestic ones – better food, better entertainment, better service. It really is shocking how bad the experience on domestic carriers is in comparison (though Virgin America is pretty great).

And actually, some airlines do offer massages in first class!

I absolutely hate flying but I love traveling so I do fly several times a year. I loved flying with Virgin America from Orlando to SFO and it was really cheap too. I really liked the vibe with the purple and pink lights and the swanky music in the bathroom and at the gate. The tv and “online” ordering system were great. I bet flying overseas with Virgin Atlantic would be a much better experience than flying with other airlines. Especially Iberia, they had the least leg room in any airplane I’ve ever been in!
