St. Patrick’s Day Running Gear

March 7, 2013 by Julie 1,283 Comments

Lunch today snuck up on me!

Before I knew it, my stomach was grumbling and I needed food!

Fact: This meal looks horrendous.

cauliflower sausage scramble

But lots of shredded cheese has a way of making me overlook an unattractive dish!

I began by sautéing a chopped chicken sausage in a skillet while I steamed some cauliflower in the microwave. I then added leftover roasted Brussels sprouts to the skillet, followed by the mashed steamed cauliflower and a boatload of shredded cheese.

Easy, satisfying, ugly and delicious!

March Book Club

With the majority of the votes, the winning book for the PBF March Book Club  is…

the fault in our stars john green

The Fault In Our Stars by John Green. We’ll be discussing this book on the blog on Friday, April 5. I can’t wait to start reading!

Now let’s talk about St. Patrick’s Day running gear…

St. Patrick’s Day Running Gear

Are any of you out there planning to run in a St. Patrick’s Day race?

Ryan, my sister, my sister’s boyfriend and I will be running in a 10K on St. Patrick’s Day and ever since we signed up to participate, we’ve been sending each other costume ideas. You know we like to dress up for races together!

Here are some winners:

I saw a bunch of women wearing fun sparkly skirts over their leggings or compression shorts at the Women’s Half Marathon a few years ago and thought they looked awesome! (Bachelor fans, I think we know Tierra would be all about this one. Sparkle.)

  • BICBands Shamrock Headband

St. Patrick's Day Headbands

You guys know how obsessed I am with these headbands by now. When I saw the shamrock headband on their website, I just had to have it. A headband that doesn’t slip that’s also peppered with lots of little shamrocks!? Oh yes! (Get psyched because YOU have a chance to win a $40 BICBands gift card that you can use toward one at the end of this post!)

  • Target $1 Bin Finds

St. Patrick's Day Costume

Surely I’m not the only one out there who gets suckered into the Target $1 bins? I found a bunch of goodies in the $1 bins last weekend that I picked up for our upcoming race, including blinking bracelets, wigs, light-up rings and more. I was especially pumped about the neck ties!

  • Shamrock Suspenders

My favorite memory of St. Patrick’s Day is from grade school. The teacher had a rubber stamp of “leprechaun feet” that she put all over the desks and chairs to make it look like we had a “visitor” overnight. She’d then have the chocolate gold coins hidden somewhere for us to find.

St. Patrick’s Day has always been a tradition my father and I celebrate together. Regardless of how busy I am or the fact I lived 4 hours away in college, both my dad and I cancel work and our plans for the day and head to downtown Cleveland to watch the parade. Even though I am older now, it might seem “weird” that I hang out with my dad instead of participating in green beer day like most of my college friends do. But, it is something my dad and I have done together since I was eight years old and I cannot pass up these memories! I still recall the first time he picked me up from middle school and we played hookie the whole day and ate wayyyyyyyy to many hotdogs! Anyways, I would LOVE to rock those headbands this year while spending time with my dad. It would make the day even more perfect! Thanks Julie!

In college I went out with bunch of my sorority sisters and we ended getting brought back to campus in the drunk van. The local police department was giving free rides home and that was the only vehicle big enough for our group!

My son used to spend DAYS making a leprechaun trap. He’d use false bottoms, mirrors and sticky surfaces in an effort to capture the leprechaun. Unfortunately he outgrew that early but it was fun while it lasted.

I always start the day with an attempt at green pancakes….they rarely turn out just right. I always try to end the day with a green beer and an Irish Car Bomb. The list was longer in years past, but when I realized the car bomb took care of the Jameson shot and the Guinness all in one drink, I backed off on the others in favor of the more delicious combo.

My favorite memory has to be, while studying abroad is Australia, skipping all of our classes to go to the Irish pub by noon. I guess that makes my favorite St. Patty’s day tradition the green beer, drinking nasty beer is so much better when there is green food coloring dropped in!

My favorite tradition growing up was dressing for school every St. Patrick’s Day in green and my old school mom would give me a hard time because we are Italian. I would explain every year that everyone is Irish on St. Patty’s Day! We laugh about it to this day.

My favorite St. Patrick’s day memory has to be from when I was in Elementary school. One of my teachers had the class make leprechaun homes as a take home project. The leprechaun homes were lavishly constructed with various hues of green and on St. Patrick’s day the leprechauns left the thinnest gold foot prints in the houses along with wonderful chocolate gold coins. I enjoyed the creativity of my teacher and that memory still makes me smile.

Easily my best St. Pattys day memory was sophomore year of high school when my marching band was invited to march in the St. Patrick’s Day Parade in Dublin! True we weren’t allowed out on the town afterwards, but just being in Dublin on St. Patrick’s day was amazing and I want to go back and experience it all again!

    2. I love this giveaway! My favorite St. Patrick’s Day memory was definitely two years ago, when my birthday fell on the same day as the St. Patrick’s Day parade in my town! We have a big festival, some day drinking was involved, and lots of music/food and good times out and about with ALL my favorite friends 🙂 I was such a happy birthday/St Patty’s Day camper!

    3. I hope you keep your tissues nearby for “A Fault in Our Stars…” GREAT read!!
