The Evolution of Ryan’s Hair

January 26, 2012 by Julie 87 Comments

Those of you who guessed that this afternoon’s sneak peek picture was a flashback look at Ryan’s hair get 10 points!

When Ryan and I first started dating he had long, shaggy, blonde hair.

I typically gravitate toward brunette guys, so I was actually surprised to find myself very attracted to a blonde boy! Apparently my brunette preference held true, because under that mop of blonde was a brunette just dying to get out!

When Ryan had his blonde hair, people would tell us that we looked alike all the time. Because that’s not a creepy thing to hear…

Ryan’s grandmother had an ongoing offer to pay Ryan $100 if he chopped off his long hair. One day he surprised all of us and showed up at my parents’ house with a buzzed head without telling anyone what he was doing!

I loved it!

Apparently he wasn’t yet ready to part with his long, wavy locks, because before we knew it he had a head full of thick, brown hair.

Now he keeps his hair nice and short and simple.

I find it oddly amusing that Ryan’s hair has seen more changes than mine. I’ve never dyed my hair and it’s been long and super thin my whole life.

Dinner

Dinner tonight was quite simple thanks to freezer food.

I have a lot of packing to do tonight because I leave for New York tomorrow, so I wanted a quick and easy dinner.

general tso

A few weeks ago I received a package of Crazy Cuizine authentic Asian dishes. I immediately put them into the freezer and forgot about them until tonight when I had an intense craving for Chinese food.

I followed the package directions and heated the General Tso’s chicken in a bit of canola oil on the stove top before adding fresh broccoli and the zesty ginger sauce packet to the hot chicken.

crazy cuisine

It was so, so good. Ryan and I couldn’t get over how much it tasted like takeout Chinese food. By nature General Tso’s chicken isn’t exactly healthy, but at least this dish was high in protein and free of preservatives and trans-fats.

I also ended up cutting up an apple to eat on the side because I wanted something sweet, nutritious and crunchy. Great meal!

My mom taped bows on my head, too! My worst hair “style”…2 words: home perm! Ugh. The chemicals, the smell, my mom pulling my hair and putting it on those rollers I came to find out about 5 years ago that I have naturally curly/wavy hair. Who knew?!

every time i’ve thought about dying it, a hair stylist has talked me out of it, saying it’s really hard to get back to a “natural” blonde if i eventually don’t want to dye it any longer!

you are so right! i was a natural dark blond growing up, but then i used sun-in in high school and then used punky color dyes, and then was a redhead for ten years…and i have NO natural hair color left! really…it’s a blah nothing…so i have to keep coloring my hair, been blond again for a year but going back to red…..i certainly keep my hair stylist in business!

Yes!! Right before I started college, my friend – who had a super cute short cut (sign number 1) – took me to her hairstylist to get my hair cut. My hair was pretty long – past my shoulder blades – and I wanted it cut to my shoulders. Instead, the girl cut it to my chin. I started crying in the chair. It was SO bad and it took forever to grow out – so many people can pull off short hair and have it look adorable but I am definitely not one of them!

He looks like Val Kilmer! I never noticed it before but he really does, especially with the longer hair. That’s so funny! My hair has been everything from natural blonde to platinum to blue to dark dark brown! I get bored if I stick with the same thing for too long.

haha too funny. my husband has also undergone quite the hairstyles throughout the years… i’m definitely a fan of the shorter and simple look, which is how he keeps it now. my hair has changed a ton. i’ve dyed it from an auburn to brown to super blonde to natural highlights, which is how it is now. i plan to keep it the natural highlights look for a long time because it’s so much less upkeep. my hair has also been a ton of different lengths, but i know now that i definitely like it longer.

Oh my gosh, once I grew out my hair and dyed it a really light blond… it was the worst thing I ever did! Totally fried my hair and it was SO expensive (my hair is naturally dark and curly). To top it off, I straightened it daily too. What a terrible mistake…

It got so bad that over winter break, I chopped it all off (probably a good 8 inches) and dyed it practically black. Shocked my friends back in high school for sure… but it was my most popular hair style 🙂

Nowadays I dye my hair a dark brown w/ red highlights (it’s very close to my natural color) and I wear my hair curly. It’s never been healthier or easier to manage!

Love all the different ‘do’s! I think what is even creepier than someone saying you look like your significant other is when someone asks if your brother is your husband! Happens every time me and my brother go out into public. Making it even more ridiculous is that we look like twins. When we were shopping for his new house a few years back we would walk into a furniture store and the sales associate would ask without fail, “Oh! Is this your first place together?” We would look at each other and think “Considering we have lived together for the past 19 years, I’m going to go with no.”

No I don’t. I really don’t think much about eating or not eating carbs… I just try to eat mostly healthy and center my meals around lean proteins, veggies, fruits and wholesome carbs. Some meals may have more of one and less of another. It’s not really a conscious planning on my part though.

I have intentionally not been baking quite as much because I was the only one eating the end product for the most part.
