Ultimate Motivator

March 22, 2011 by Julie 80 Comments

Sure exercise mantras are a great way to motivate yourself to get into the gym and bust out a workout first thing in the morning, but, when it comes to running, for me the ultimate motivator is sleep.

Yup, sleep.

You see, when I take Sadie for a run before work, I knock out both my exercise and her exercise for the morning in one fell swoop. This means I don’t have to take her on a long walk after my workout which, therefore, means I get to sleep in a bit!

This morning, as Ryan headed off to the gym in the 5 a.m. hour, I slept in, promising Sadie a good run when I awoke.

When Ryan arrived home, I hopped out of bed, quickly changed and took Sadie on our typical running loop, completing 5 miles before walking a bit to cool down.

The weather in Central Florida is ideal for running right now! I checked my phone before we left and it said it was 60 degrees. Perfection!

Once our run was over, I was ready for breakfast.

Breakfast

Breakfast this morning came together in a flash thanks to some preparation last night.

Overnight oats awaited me!

Last night I combined:

  • 1/2 c. old fashioned oats
  • 1/2 c. almond milk
  • Chia seeds

I let it soak all night and then this morning I added a scoop of chocolate peanut butter to the mix for some healthy fats and extra flavor.

Stir it up!

Sure it looks like baby regurgitation, but it tastes pretty darn good and that’s all I’m after!

I think Sadie smelled the peanut butter because she was really into givin’ out the lovin’ as I was eating my breakfast.

Sadie hugs are the best.

Time to hop in the car and head to work. On our run this morning I saw some really scary tire marks that led right into a lake near our apartment. Just a reminder to drive extra safe today!

Happy Tuesday!

One of my workout motivators is sleep as well! But more because I sleep SO much better if I worked out that day.

I know you totally have a ton of mini meals throughout the day and thats A-OKAY. and you say you don’t count calories but are aware and tend to ame at 300 to 400 calorie meals right? don’t you sometimes just want to go all out and make like a good bowl of oatmeal with nut butter, coconut, sliced banana and other fun toppings?

Hey! Just started reading your blog, love it! I actually found a Garmin Forerunner 305 at Target on clearance today for $100, but sadly when I got home I found out why it was on clearance, no heart rate monitor strap, so back to the store it goes. Do you like yours a lot? I’ve been using a standard Polar heart rate monitor for the past year or so, but I’m planning on doing a half marathon this year and am thinking about upgrading. Do you recommend the Garmin watch? Also, I was in Orlando last week (down from Jacksonville) and saw that same Toojays truck! It made me smile.

i do recommend it if you want to track your pace and distance. if you’re just interested in a calorie count/ heart rate monitor, then the polar watches are awesome! for half marathon training, i definitely preferred my garmin!

So true, I love my sleep! That is why I’d much rather sleep in & go for a run instead of waking up early and getting back and forth from the gym.

I thought of a new mantra today. Instead of saying “I don’t have time to workout” I need to say “I don’t have time to not workout”. Working out is something that is just as important as drinking water, eating fruit, doing simple things. Working out is vital to my life.

Those overnight oats do look like baby regurg but for some reason I still find myself really wanting to try them! lol. Oatmeal is my morning staple but once it starts getting so hot in the summer I am going to have to do something else! 😛 That just may be it!
