Insatiable

May 7, 2012 by Julie 81 Comments

Do you ever have days when your appetite seems insatiable no matter how much you eat?

That was me yesterday.

I snacked all day long, though dinner and after dinner and went to bed feeling just plain bleh.

I actually think my eating frenzy started on Saturday at the Taste of Ocala and the momentum kept up through last night. It was a filling weekend, that’s for sure!

When I think back on what I ate yesterday, I realize I didn’t eat much protein outside of my chicken salad for lunch and found myself snacking on cookies and white cheddar popcorn. (I mean how good it that stuff?) More often than not, eating crap just makes me crave more crap.

I think we all have days like this sometimes and I just try to move on and make the next day healthier. It’s no use giving yourself a hard time and I try to remember how much better I feel on days when my diet is filled with healthier fare. I’m using that thought to motivate me to eat healthy food today!

Breakfast

Healthy food for breakfast came in the form of overnight oats topped with a freshly sliced banana.

overnight oats

This was actually batch number two of overnight oats that I made last night. Batch number one was consumed after dinner as an evening snack. (This happens quite often when I make overnight oats, actually. It’s like they call to me from the fridge.)

10overnight oatmeal

I also had a hot mug of crème brulee coffee on the side.

A little caffeine for a productive Monday morning!

Workout

Before breakfast, I headed to the gym with Ryan for a quality workout.

I began with a 20 minute treadmill workout that got my heart rate up and left me super sweaty.

Then it was time for some strength training.

I did a total body superset workout that looked like this:

Here are links to some of the exercises that may be confusing:

  • Walking Lunge with Medicine Ball Twist
  • Deadlift to Row
  • Cross Body Bicep Hammer Curl

It was a fast-moving workout that challenged me and made my muscles burn. Victory!

PBF May Book Club

After capturing slightly more than 48 percent of the votes, the book selected for the PBF’s May Book Club is Still Missing by Chevy Stevens.

We’ll be discussing the book on June 1.

Happy reading!

Question of the Morning

  • What do you do on days when your appetite seems insatiable?

On days when I cannot seem to satisfy my appetite no matter how much I eat, I try to make a cognizant effort to eat healthy snacks that are high in healthy fat and protein, like apple slices with peanut butter or trail mix. I will also try to get out of the house and do something since I find that this feeling often happens to me when I’m at home, procrastinating on something I should be doing like cleaning or freelance work.

I didn’t follow either of these little tricks yesterday though… cookies and white cheddar popcorn simply called to me. Smile

when my hunger is insatiable i try like the dickens to ignore it which usually just leads to me eating MORE crap. i find a piece of whole grain toast with peanut butter + a glass of milk is super satisfying, when i have the will power and presence of mind to remember to eat that. and i totally feel the same about junk food – the more i eat it, the more i crave it! if i never eat candy or chips, i don’t crave them – as soon as i do, though, i want them all the time! life’s all about balance though so those junk food days are okay :).

I hate when I have bottomless pit days! To be honest, I just sort of go with it and try not to eat so much that I get sick. Then I make up for it the next day. Or I tell myself that I will. lol

Protein filled smoothies get me through those sorts of day an plenty of leftover roasted veggies for nibbling on if my snacks aren’t filling me. Love the workout, will definitely be giving it a try.

I eat my usual meals on those days but I pound back raw veggies with hummus if I want to keep eating. If I want a treat, I’ll eat that, but not before loading up on veggies first. Cucumbers are especially filling.

Oh my goodness, this used to happen to me all the time. I agree with you when you said eating crap makes you want more crap, but I think it’s specifically sugar. When you eat sugar, physically your body gets addicted to it.

I had to cut out all sugar, including most fruits, for two months (long story, if you actually want to know, comment or go to my blog) and I find that since then I have not had one single day where I’m insatiable. I blame sugar!

Those days seem to be more common now (to me, that is). But I try to fill myself up with cabbage-salad and water before snacking. That way I actually snack a lot less! But then there are days when no salad will enter through my mouth but I keep very little unhealthy snacking in the house.

Me too with the crazy snacking yesterday! What was going on? I thought I ate a lot of protein, but maybe it wasn’t as much as I thought. Hmmm…..

Whenever I’m bored I get snacky! I try to find something to do instead of eat (like clean…or work on paperwork…ugh), chew a piece of gum, or make myself a small healthy snack. I wish I could say this always works, but there are sometimes I just mindlessly eat all day (or weekend) and end up feeling gross.

Ow this post is perfect,i really thought i was the weird one:))) That is me TODAY. There was no food to keep me full for longer than 2 h max. What works for me in such days is :
1.Stop counting calories (like i usually do for my nutritional journal) and stop thinking about how much i ate.Just eat as much as my body tells me – funny thing is that my body senses me ignoring him and doesn´t really crave or need that much food:))
2.I try to eat more protein and whole carbs than usually (since carbs are my comfort food and protein is supossed to keep me full longer).
And then, even if i don´t feel like working out…i at least go for a walk or dance around.
I mostly try not to blame myself for it and take it as a normal thing.

I hate days like that. I think the more I eat the hungrier I am the next day. Like if I switch off from my normal food/eating routine and pig out, it takes me a couple days to get my stomach use to good, normal, healthy meals.

I know exactly how you feel, I have been having that bottomless put feeling a lot lately and while I try to fill up on heavy snacks sometimes it just doesn’t do the trick and you have to have the less healthy options you crave

On days when I feel like this, I make sure that lunch includes 3/4 to a full cup of no salt added beans- they are full of healthy fiber and to be honest, the bloating makes me so full that I don’t feel like eating the entire rest of the day!

I just made overnight oats according to your recipe for the 1st time ever! Very tasty. But I keep eating them, and eating, and eating….it’s like a never ending bowl of nutritious density! I think I will be full forever.

Wow! Can I relate to those binge days! I hate those days… it seems to happen when I don’t start my morning with a workout, or when I’m at work and bored (or extremely stressed!). I don’t know how to pull myself out, which makes a continuous cycle of feeling “bleh.” Sounds weird, but I’m happy to hear (read) that I’m not the only one!

    Great workout, btw! Pinned! =)

My roommates and I call those “bottomless pit” days. Often known to occur after a night of a few too many drinks…
My best solution is generally to eat exactly what will satisfy me, whether its a giant bacon egg and cheese on a bagel, or a slice of cake at 9:00 am. If i do that it sometimes prevents me from eating tons of random things as the day goes on.

I get that Insatiable feeling often. Swimming does it for me every time as well as a bike over 75 miles and a run over 14 miles. I try to drink plenty of water as hunger is a sign of thirst. If water doesn’t work I try an apple with peanut butter or a banana. As I increase my workouts to 15 – 18 hrs a week I try to maintain a 3000 to 4000 cal intake.
